A breath of fresh air for the fantastic French.
13 March 2024
The animal kingdom is a film that does good, already it is a new proof that when French fantasy cinema dares, it is. Imperfect also, yes, some dialogue and situation are not perfectly credible with some biases in the history a little steep and fast, But we easily forgive him so much to see the real staging and endearing characters all in a scenario that surprises and surprises, offers a real breath of fresh air. Full of poetry, the story managed to do what we have been waiting for so long: a real fantasy film, not an American film antic.

My only regret, even if the casting is interesting, remains the director of actor who at times is a really little right especially with the character of Émile and Julia (Adèle Exarchopoulos), Romain Duris is as for him and as often, impeccable. So yes the dialogues are not always well written and it's even quite surprising, because the film is doing very well at other times. In short, it is a bit irregular and it is a bit of a shame, like its history which does not always sound very realistic in the treatment of bugs in our society.

But the heart is elsewhere, the Animal Kingdom also chooses to be more poetic than realistic and it is little to be for better to avoid some discomfort that could occur for the benefit of what it tells. He catches up in every way with a treatment much smarter than it seems, full of meaning with his quality staging. The special effects are superb, the story offers an intelligent look that takes the guts (personally I really hooked from half) with a touch of humor well dosed. A little like the main character who assumes himself, the film seems to follow the same path, when he becomes himself, he touches with the finger what we hoped for more with French fantasy cinema: to tell something powerful and authentic without overbidding. Sign of our time, emphasis of our time on our own metamorphosis, it is a real moment of unexpected freedom that makes a crazy good.

The Hunger (1983)

A real little unknown jewel.
13 March 2024
I want to tell you right away that I am not a fan of Tony Scott at all and even if I know how to recognize in his singular style interesting points, I really can not catch. But what was not my surprise when I discovered "The Hunger" which is in my opinion the equivalent of Blade Runner at Ridley, in the sense that I see here his deepest, interesting and hypnotic film.

To start, Catherine Deneuve, David Bowie and Susan Sarandon who share the poster is already a very good sign that does not refuse, but if in addition the direction and the scenario are excellent, how not to fall under the spell? In many ways the film is a real gem, it is as mysterious as it is dark and offers an absolutely fascinating story with tragic characters, all with an unprecedented treatment for the creatures of the movie.

I would not say more not to vent the surprise of the subject he deals with brilliantly, but it is certainly a film to discover urgently. I must admit that this film completely rehabilitated the director in my heart having truly fallen under the spell of this unique and fascinating work.

A fantastic film in every sense of the word, powerful and captivating to discover urgently.

Pandorum (2009)
7/10
In space, without purpose, it reveals the emptiness of our existence.
13 March 2024
Very pleasant discovery that this Pandorum which, if it does not revolutionize the genre, still offers its share of surprise rather well kept. The film also offers its share of situation not always very tangible at first sight but finally, the adventures fit rather well into its universe and its subject.

The story as well as the suspense of the situations are very involved, to the point that has the image of its main character, we ask it constantly, but what the hell? So we follow n Bower's awakening after a too long cryogenic sleep. We are aboard the last ship that contains all that remains of humanity and very quickly, we discover that even if humanity tries here its last goes all to survive, nothing seems to pass as expected.

In the space void that seems to offer no tomorrow, chaos quickly regains its rights in this stifling, freezing, dirty, tribal story, a kind of Mad Max in the closed space in eight rather well shot. So even if it is not the biggest film in its category, it is part of the top of the basket and remains very sympathetic until its final revelation that some will find a little easy but that remains in the image of the whole film, unpretentious and well built.

Matango (1963)

In truth, I am dead and the others are still alive.

They are dead... all of them.

No... the truth is, I'm dead and the others are still alive.

The mysterious introduction is a real dilemma, what an incredible film, I was advised me who had loved The Thing and yes, even if it is a bit of an era in its form, I found it really great. What's this about, Matango? We follow here a small group of rich people who run aground on an island in appearance deserted and who discovers a threat as original as scary because almost "natural".

Many subjects collide here, civilization and survivalism, social framework and oppression, jealousy and possession, nature and nuclear experience, the film is rich, unexpected and at times extremely scary. This is a real gem that I encourage you to discover if you are looking for a real horror fantasy film, rich in meaning and sub-text that really out of the ordinary.

Sisters (1972)

Horror and genius!
27 January 2024
De palma, my love! With Sister/ Sisters of Blood we are in one of these absolute Hitchcockian films, while enjoying her staging on the divergence of views, fantasies and voyeurism. On reflection, I even think that Sister is his film sum of everything he loves and admires in the master of suspense.

However it was not won in advance, I left with some a priori negative to discover the story, I had doubts on the credibility of the scenario at times because I found some elements a little strange even stretched and not very realistic, when patatra, we finally know the truth and there, obviously all makes sense with horror and genius!

This is what I love about him, I'm as much carried away as his characters so if you like Hitchcock more shocking, this little gem may well make you shudder!
