Siesta (1987)
What is so great about this film?
Someone please tell me what is so great about this film? It is nothing but very thinly disguised porno. Ellen Barkin proves once again what a very poor actress she is and that the only thing she knows to do in a film is take her clothes off. The only good thing about this film is Gabriel Byrne.
Who unfortunately has very little screen time and the screen time he has he must share with Ellen Barkin. What a waste of time, film, and money. Why is this film called a mystery? I realized the minute that Claire woke up on the runway, with blood all over the front of her dress under which she was naked, that she was dead. Claire got what she deserved. As for Jodie Foster being in this film, this is another actress that is overrated.
Hidalgo (2004)
Old Fashioned Entertainment
This movie is reminiscence of the westerns of the late 1940's and 1950's where you knew who the good guy was, who the bad guy was and the horse is wonderful. I don't care if this story is based on a true story or not, it is a good story. The mustang is a true American symbol. Although small in size and not as sleek as the Arabian, Hidalgo showed that the size of the heart in the race is what is important. It was also so good to see Omar Sharif in an interesting role for a change. Viggo Mortensen was very good as the half-breed Frank Hopkins who did not like anyone insulting or hurting his horse. I will definitely go see this movie again and I am also going to recommend this film to friends and family.
Cold Mountain (2003)
Very moving
This movie is very realistic of the time and era in which it is set. The beginning scene of the Battle of the Crater is very graphic and shows that the Civil War was not romantic but bloody and cruel. The suffering of those left behind is moving and heart wrenching. The cruelty of both the home guard and the soldiers is also portrayed. The only complaint I have is that the Battle of the Crater was not filmed using Civil War Units from the United States. Jude Law and Nicole Kidman have outdone themselves with their performances. And what can I say about Rene Zellweger except that she is the very highlight of this film. I highly recommend this movie for anyone interested in the Civil War. One last piece of advice, take tissues if you have a tendency to cry at sad endings.
Virginia's Run (2002)
Family Film for Horse Lovers
This is a wonderful family film in the tradition of Disney. For every female who loves horses, this film will touch in a way no other film can. Yes, the plot twists can be seen coming but this does not change the good feeling that the end leaves you with. Gabriel Byrne is wonderful as the father who just wants to protect his children. This is a movie to be watched with a large bowl of popcorn and a large box of tissues.
Ghost Ship (2002)
Scary
I loved this movie. The special effects are great and scary, the acting very well done and the plot interesting. I plan to see this movie again. Gabriel Byrne is at his best and shows why he is one of the best actors today. Although this is the only work of Julianna Margulies I have seen other than ER, she is definitely growing as an actress.
