Richard Jewell (2019)
Very Serious Subject That All Should See, But Immensely Entertaining As Well
Disclaimer: I say no spoilers because I believe the story is well known and nothing should come as a shock.
Awesome dialogue throughout. A heart-wrenching story that packs some great comedic lines as well. I would probably give it a 9, but since I saw a couple of reviews give it a ONE (no way that is a fair review!) I added a bonus point. The acting is top notch and the movie deserves several awards, however I cannot see today's Hollywood honoring a movie that dares to rip the mainstream media. All high school students should have to watch this movie to warn them that what you see on "the news" may not be true. And even when it is proven false, no problem, they simply move on to the next story that they hope will draw ratings. Like most True Story movies, there is some parts that may not be true. The reporter may not have slept with an agent to get her information. But that isn't very vital. It is what everyone did with that information. I understand the media can't be trusted, but the FBI? Very sad and scary. Mr. Eastwood is an American icon and thankfully someone who doesn't have to care what modern Tinseltown thinks of his product. He told a story that needed to be told because too many in power would want us to forget this egregious treatment of a Joe Lunchbucket Hero. WATCH THIS MOVIE WITH AN OPEN MIND. You will laugh. And you will cry.
Personal Shopper (2016)
Ending is easy to explain (No Spoilers)
There is no intellectual explanation to this move. The ending is vague because the creators had no story to begin with. I'd rather watch 6 hours of C-SPAN than re-watch this 105 minutes of boredom. Stewart's character? Well, I guess not caring about your appearance must mean you are really deep. I do not believe there was one smile in the whole movie. Just a side character? a worker or waiter? anyone smile in France? I don't write many reviews and I'm not sure I've written a negative one because I figure I've already wasted enough of my time on a poor product. A Ghost Story? I'll probably be haunted by this movie for a long time. Every time I watch something, I'll have to wonder: What if this is WORSE than Personal Shopper?
The Woman in Black (2012)
Slow start, but very solid, old fashioned ghost story
First of all, forget the rating system on IMDb. I rate by genre. How can I compare this movie to a classic like To Kill a Mockingbird? Impossible. The Haunting (from 1963) would be a TEN in the Ghost Story category. In my opinion, movies like Poltergeist would be a 4, whereas Insidious maybe a 5. I am hoping that there are movies I haven't seen (due to research on IMDb) that would fall even lower on a rating scale of this nature. I must point out that I have NEVER seen a Harry Potter film, so no prejudice here. Except for the aforementioned Haunting, not too many movies would hit the Hall-of-Fame numbers of 9 and 10, but The Woman in Black dares to hand out enough chills and thrills to creep very close to such a lofty ranking. Except for a VERY slow start to the film, this movie ranks right up there with the best that I have seen when it comes to ghosts and spirits. A couple of cheap BOO moments, but that has to be expected. By having the movie take place in the early 20th century and in good old foggy England, you don't have to deal with cell phones and home video to ruin the story. Wait until late at night, dim the lights and get ready to be spooked. Be patient, since the beginning drags a bit and really, the ending could be a bit better, but the middle 70 minutes has plenty of chills. Children over ten can enjoy it, as long as they have been exposed to spooky stories in the past. No sex, no swearing and very mild gore/violence. I'm a bit old fashioned, but I really liked it.
Gooby (2009)
It's a Good Wholesome Kids Movie
No, it isn't Monsters, Inc or Toy Story but a solid, "clean", family film. My kids are 7 & 10 and they enjoyed it. Purposely low end special effects but it produces smiles and lessons in growing up. The parents actions are a bit far-fetched, but hey---it's a movie. If your kids only like high action, semi-violent PG-13 flicks, then this isn't for them. One word review: CUTE. A boy has to move to a new town and school (that's never been done in a movie) and can't make friends (Hmmm?). There's a bully! Inattentive parents. A not-so-great baby sitter. I know what you're thinking...you've seen this all before! But for some reason, it works better than similar flicks. I think "less-is-more" here. Simple story, with a few laughs and some touching moments. The ten and under crowd should love it or they've grown up way too fast.
The Last Mimzy (2007)
Above Average Family Film
You don't have to worry about violence or bad language on this flick. Kids will enjoy it, at least up until age 12. Maybe older. It has many components: The brother and sister who seem to have a lot of freedom (where are the parents in these movies?), there is some science fiction, fantasy, imagination, special effects and action. Oh and we have the evil FBI (if you are of the conservative persuasion, you will notice a little knock at The Patriot Act in this film, but it is slight and easy to ignore). There is a time travel element here that although a key point of the story, if you think about it very much, it leaves you kind of flat. But the child actors are awesome and the bulk of the journey is fun. We had fun watching the expressions on our kids faces while they watched. Pop some popcorn and enjoy. If you have a projector for backyard movies---this is top notch for the kid crowd.
