great memories!
25 December 2004
I was 4 or 5 when we saw this. It would be another thirteen years or so before it would be shown again on television, but my brother and sister and watched it that night back in the mid-70's. What a hoot!

Around that same time acquired a full-sheet poster of the movie from a now-defunct movie warehouse in Philly. Wished now I would have kept it, but I traded it for some awesome old western lobby cards.

The "Tobonga" is one of my favorite childhood monsters. I remember the next day after watching it the first time I rode my tricycle up over the hill beyond where we lived to join another group of kids. My brother pointed to a stump that was part of a fence post and warned me about the tree-monster! I turned and pedaled all the way home as fast as I could! That old stump is still there! That was in '64 or 65'.

Loved the quicksand! Always been a fan of jungle flicks, so I must credit this awful little film for that!

On Death Curse of Tartu
28 June 2004
I have wondered for years exactly what budget this film was made. Mmmmmmmm...not tooooo bad...Actually, if you think about it, I don't know of any other similiar story-line from that time period in such a film, good or bad. I HATED the spider! Totally uncalled for! The webs and the psychotronic colors reflected in the cave interior was all that was really needed, and the Rise of Tartu in the climax was pretty good. The atmosphere was truly creepy, and the background drums could have been more subtle, though I have always believed effective. I really liked the final scene, corny as heck but the quicksand and the skull were right up my alley! The film obviously could have been done better, but HEY: it's a wonderful tool for the small-budget film maker to learn from and expand on. Great drive-in style flick!

The Cyclops (1957)
My first movie!
28 June 2004
This was the first movie I ever saw! I was 2 years old and my brother was 4. Scared the be-jesus out of me! Hey, I was only 2. Down through the years, I became an avid reader of FaMOUS MOnsters of Filmland magazine, and NEVER saw it covered, and nary a publicity pic from Dear Old Uncle Forry! At 12, I watched War Of The Colossal Beast on the Saturday matinée, only to be thoroughly disappointed that it wasn't "that" movie.

Fast-forward to 1984. I went with my brother and his wife to a video rental store in a nearby town and the video box was one of those Elvira thingies...but "something" about that title... I showed it to my brother with a quizzical look and he flashed me a strange half-smile...

Anyway, I found it, (or should I say..."we" found it!) in 1984 after it had been aired on network t.v. only once (to my knowledge) back in 1962 or '63! Needless to say, we had a neat little "reunion" that Saturday afternoon! Ain't life fun?!?!?!?!

comments for the Snake People 1968
23 June 2004
Although it's getting kicked about Snake People isn't by far the worst film.

However, I do urge readers to exercise caution with any of the other films of the genre cranked out of those studios back then. I do enjoy the campiness and the dance scenes are pretty cool, but the film could have been better by all means. The dwarf actually did lend a healthy dose of just the kind of campiness enjoyable in such a film, and the death scene elicited a chuckle from a close friend and confidant who never had the privilege to enjoy the movie when it aired back in '74. (My glahsses...my glahsses!!) It's another one of those "tamer" movies for the kiddies to enjoy in the den while the parents play cards in the kitchen. If I had a drive-in, Snake People would definitely have a place up there on the screen, especially compared to a lot of those crappy ones I actually DID see at the drive-in back in the 70's!

Warlock Moon (1973)
comments for great film
17 June 2004
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this one on late night in the 70's and was absolutely creeped out! I knew I was in for another one of those low-budget cranks...but this is one I remembered and taped off of late night about 9 years ago just so I could have it. I absolutely agree that the director should have at least made one more film like it...heck, maybe not even a horror film at that. Perhaps an action flick or even more innovative for it's time would have been for him to make a post-apocalyptic film which very well could have been a percursor to Mad Max, or even the slew of like films apparently shot in Italy in the early 80's (??)

Definitely could have been better microphone placement, that's my only complaint. Warlock Moon is one of my all-time favs! I like the plot twists too. I remember it kind of took me out there after the middle of Act I and spun it off somewhere I didn't quite expect.

And what a wallop of an ending!!

Mad Doc
17 June 2004
Mad Doctor must have been an experiment for kids and cameras. It seems as though a bit more seriousness was taken (for what it's worth) in the following productions of the genre. HIGHLY recommend to entertain the kiddies while the adults play cards upstairs in the kitchen!

I think it's really strange in a deja-vu kind of way that comments are from folks who remember seeing these particular movies on the drive-in circuit. With the crap that's out there today, I think these are tame and would feel more comfortable with the kids watching these as opposed to the slasher flicks, etc.

If anyone knows where I could possible obtain stills, lobby cards, etc for any films of this genre it would be highly appreciated!

Well about 2 years or so ago, I decided to use the world-wide web to try and trace an obscure film I only vaguely recall from the late night creature feature circuit around 1974 or '75. A blessed soul I found online recommended that the description sounded to him like "Mad Doctor of Blood Island", and the rest just fell into place. I was amused and quite frankly surprised that these rare low-budget films actually have at least a small following, and I thoroughly enjoy reading the comments! Ah...I can remember the local drive-in around 1968 or so, but I can almost imagine myself with that little family hiding in the backseat. Quite honestly, when I caught (Brides of Blood??) on late night it quite literally made my skin crawl, especially with those eerie reverberation like sounds emanating from deep within the jungle. Since I can remember, I have always loved jungle adventure/jungle horror films, so if anyone would like to respond and chat, I'm always open to new friends, especially if we could get up a drive-in chat! All hail the Mental Hygiene League!! If you are one of these from the Richmond/Danville area, PLEASE respond! We have mutual friends up here in the Shenandoah Valley!

Any recommendations for lost/and or obscure jungle horror please respond...

not a bad screenplay
13 July 2002
I remember seeing this title on the marquee at my home drive-in as a child. Watched it and finds it an interesting film, but curious as to why it's not in the Mad Doc series...or is it? The acting isn't bad at all, especially compared to original Mad Doc. I noted that the first scene of the monster's arms look like they were re-used from the Mad Doc flix. The Filipino back-drop of this film, as well as the Mad Doc films, provides something a little different and interesting that stands alone from movies that we're accustomed to viewing. The mono sound with the atmosphere, particularly in the opening scenes, gives the filmgoer the creeps. I do wish I could've talked my parents into taking me to see it way back then!

It's better the second time around
13 July 2002
Actually, BOB is considerably better than the first film, MDof BloodIsle. I believe BOB could well stand alone without the first if need be. The use of cameras and lighting are improved, as well as the acting, with the exception of that boat captain! I rather like the jungle adventure that makes up most of ActII, but given a choice, I would like to have seen more scenes of the monster. As a fan of the genre, must say it's not a bad little film all considered...
