Cloverfield (2008)
Awesome.
Most people will tell you Cloverfield is about a monster that attacks Manhattan. However, it's so much more than that. I would describe Cloverfield as a drama rather than a monster movie, but it really combines all these elements: Drama, romance, action, mystery, horror, and sci-fi.
When first hearing that Cloverfield is about a monster that attacks Manhattan, it would be likely to think of the movie as unoriginal, but it is the exact opposite of that. Cloverfield is directed using the hand-held(shaky camera) technique, which is a gutsy move, as not everyone likes the technique. The film is portrayed as if it's raw footage of the monster attacking Manhattan, found by the US government after the attack. Many people complain about the filming, and say that it's like an amateur filmed it, but I personally loved the cinematography. The hand-held technique also gives the movie a really mysterious vibe, because you only know as much as an average person would. There's no scientist there to explain the monsters origins and how to destroy it, which is really annoying to me in most monster movies.
Another original thing about Cloverfield is the viral marketing. Viral marketing is advertising a product through some form of media(in Cloverfield's case, the internet) indirectly and relies on word of mouth. Some of the Cloverfield viral websites: Slusho, Tagruato, 1-18- 08, and many others. Following the viral campaign was lots of fun, and added a lot to the experience of the movie.
People complain about the camera technique, the mystery, the plot, basically everything I like about the movie. I guess it's just a difference in opinion, and it can't be proved one way or another.
Overall, I thought Cloverfield was great. It's one of my favorite movies of all time. 10/10.
Mexican Werewolf in Texas (2005)
Downright Terrible
First off, Mexican Werewolf in Texas' title is misleading as many others have pointed out. It is actually about El Chupacabra, which is a similar creature to a werewolf, but by no means the same.
The production and editing just plain suck. When it was over, I probably wouldn't be able to give a very accurate description of what exactly the Chupacabra looked like, for whenever it was in a scene(despite one or two exceptions) the camera turned all shaky and you could only see the monster's face clearly. The special effects were laughably bad, but that has to be expected from a low budget horror movie.
Along with the terrible production comes the bad actors. Now a couple give fairly plausible performances(Erika Fay and Martine Hughes), but then there were the bad actors(everybody else), who seemed to have no emotions whatsoever when people died. Then there's the absolutely terrible actor(Sara Erikson), who gives one of the 2 worst performances I've ever seen in a movie. I mean my god, she was indescribably bad.
The plot was very simple. Basically, a Chupacabra is in a small Texan town killing off local residents and a group of teens look to stop it. However, even with the plot being this simple, a few plot holes managed to leak through.
Anyways, horrible movie. However, if you are looking for a movie to make fun of and laugh at with your friends one night, this would be a pretty good one. My friends and I had a good time watching this. Probably the 2nd worst movie I've ever seen, 1/10. Awful.
V for Vendetta (2005)
Great!
V for Vendetta was a very interesting movie. Let me start by saying that Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving did an excellent job, they really captured their characters well. I thought the Wachowski's really gave a good feel of how bad of a situation the world was in by frequently showing news clips of how terrible America was functioning.I liked the pace of the movie, too, though I must admit that I did get lost a couple times, but got right back into it. This is definitely not a movie for everyone, the story is complex and makes you think. It's no Pulp Fiction, but it's harder to follow than average films are. Do not go into this movie expecting it to be action-packed or full of violence, because it's not, but that doesn't mean it's not a great film. Also, I loved the ending, I thought it played out very well. Overall, great film, 9/10.
Watchmen (2009)
Purely Amazing
I went into Watchmen with seemingly unreachable expectations, but miraculously they were met. Snyder somehow basically transformed, nearly word for word, the book into a movie.
The visual effects were spectacular. To those who said the violence was over-the-top, I agree, but I think it just added to the incredible effect of the movie. One thing I didn't like was the sound effects during the fight scenes. It sounded like martial arts, but that's just quibbling, so I'll just stop right there.
The actors were awesome, Especially Jackie Earle Haley and Jeffery Dean Morgan. The atmosphere was very well done, giving an excellent 80's feel with the music and such. The tone set in the first sequence was held throughout the entire movie, which is great.
One thing though that scares me is that those who haven't read the book may be very confused. I went with my friend who had not read the book besides like 10 pages before we left, and he said he was pretty confused for some of the time. But this is better than having it made mostly for those who haven't read the book. I just hope the people who haven't read the book won't dislike it because they were confused most the time.
Many people complained about the ending, and personally I like the ending in the book better, but it was a good move to change it because the audience that hadn't read the book would've been totally confused if the original ending were chosen. I showed my friend the ending and he said he would have been laughing if the original ending were in there instead. Plus, the effect is basically the same, so it doesn't REALLY matter.
So, this has to be one of the best movies I've ever seen, especially being adapted from such a great and complex book. I respect Zack Snyder much more now, he has proved that he can direct great movies. Watchmen earns a perfect 10 for me, a wonderful movie!
Fight Club (1999)
This movie is amazing!
Fight Club is just a great movie. It is a mix of a lot of different thing: it's dark and disturbing, but also funny, clever, and cunning. It is thought provoking and makes you really think about what you consume and how much of it you actually need. It challenges the viewer to think throughout the whole movie, and it sends a great message.
Edward Norton plays role as a corporate-working average guy who really needs someone to change his life. Then along comes Marla and Tyler Durden. It really is amazing to see how much Norton changes throughout the movie. The end will leave you stoked and maybe even confused, it also left me wanting to watch it over and over and over again. It is truly a great ending. The actor's all do a wonderful job, especially Norton and Pitt.
What else is there to write that all the other viewers haven't already? If you haven't seen Fight Club yet, go see it for god's sake! Amazing, Classic-10/10.
Reservoir Dogs (1992)
Brilliant movie.
The plot of this movie just blew me away...It was just awesome. Then the acting was great for a non-all star cast, and Tarantino executed it very well. My impression on the movie changed, because I heard it had banned in other countries for violence, but there wasn't that much. I thought it was going to have a ton of action and stuff, but it was really just a cool movie with some pretty awesome scenes in it. I thought some parts were funny, some parts were smart, some parts were sad, and some parts were just cool. That's why I like Tarantino, most of his films blend so much stuff into them, this is one of those. Also, the ending of Reservoir Dogs has to be one of the best endings to a movie I have ever seen. Overall, great movie.9/10.
Jackie Brown (1997)
Very unique movie.
Recently I've become a huge fan of Tarantino, and this was one of the 2 movies of his I hadn't seen(can't find the other one) so I rented it. I loved Samuel L Jackson in his role and De Niro was funny. The plot was unique, sometimes confusing, and barely ever boring. Samuel L Jackson does a great job as a gun merchant who will stop at nothing to reach $1,000,000, and this movie just shows why he is one of my favorite actors. De Niro is quiet, but for some reason I found him really funny. No, this movie is no Pulp Fiction, but to me that's kind of a dumb remark, it means nothing besides this movie is not one of the greatest movies of all time(which you should not expect out of it), which is perfectly fine. Anyways, a very good movie.8/10.
Saw IV (2007)
This has to be the worst Big-Budget horror movie ever.
First off, I have no idea how i got through an hour of this movie,(when I turned it off)it's a lot like Hostel Part 2, lots of gore and grisly torture with no original good background story. I like it when movies have a lot of gore(Dawn of the Dead remake,28 Weeks Later, etc.), but man, this is just too much. I have no idea how this got past the MPAA without a X rating. When it comes to the Saw movies, I liked the first 2, and hated the last 2. I watched this one with my Dad and friend. About an hour through, my Dad said,"How do you guys like this stuff?", and I said,"This movie is horrible.Let's turn it off.". I rarely ever do that. Sometimes I fast forward through movies that are terrible to see if anything good will happen, but this one just had nothing going for it but over-the-top gore and a plot identical to the other movies in the series(which is a good plot, don't get me wrong, but it gets old after a while). I just hope there's no Saw 5, and if there is, its gonna have to get some pretty damn good reviews for me to see it(this movie has a 6.2/10.....6.2?!!?!?That's seriously just messed up). Then again, I guess it is just my opinion, but honestly I have no idea how people like this movie.Overall, 0.5/10. Among the worst pieces of trash I have ever seen.
It (1990)
IT just wasn't scary...(Pun not intended heh)
Let me start off by saying, all of my friends that have seen this have said that it's great, and scary. The only things I can think of about this movie that are actually good are Tim Curry and a good plot. The execution was very bad, half the time I was checking how long it was until it was over. I turned it off when it was halfway through because I just couldn't watch it anymore. The actors weren't bad. The camera-work wasn't bad either. The villain was actually very scary to me, but it was just so boring. I would wait for something to happen, but it never did. Then when they finally face Pennywise as kids, its pretty damn lame. I mean, Pennywise is a pretty creepy villain and I would be scared of him in real life. It was just all built on anticipation of a bad ending. Of course, this IS just my opinion and I respect everyone else's. Overall, 2/10. Terrible.
Killjoy (2000)
One of those "Fast-forward movies"
I rarely see movies this bad. I got this movie thinking it was the movie It,(which I just saw,and it is also terrible)which i had heard was pretty good. Now, I said IT was bad, but Killjoy is just terrible. The camera-work was not good at all, it was shaky at times and did some odd closeups. The acting was terrible, besides the girl who played Jada, who was OK. Killjoy has to be the most annoying character I've EVER seen in a movie. His voice was just so freaking annoying! The deaths were way too fake, I probably could do better. The ending was pretty lame, and it wasn't apparent to me what the hell Killjoy was anyways. Was he a demon? Whatever, it doesn't matter anyways. The only thing that matters is that this is the only movie I've seen that was so bad I couldn't even laugh about it. Killjoy was by no means funny, the only time I laughed at him was when I first heard his annoying voice. The ending was just lame. Enough said already, just don't see this movie, it's making me want to throw up right now. 1/10, just pure awfulness(if that's a word).
Lake Placid 2 (2007)
Wait, this is a comedy right?
Well, my friend was having a party a few days ago and i was at the movie store deciding what movie to get for the party. At last years party, we watched the original Lake Placid. We all thought it was hilarious! So I rented this and we all watched it-and laughed all throughout. There was not one scary part throughout the whole movie, but there were plenty of funny parts. That's the only reason i gave it a 3. John Schneider was hilarious! His laugh was probably the most annoying(and hilarious if you're in the right mood) laugh I've ever heard. Then the other actors weren't good. The plot was almost identical to the first one, unoriginal. The actors weren't good. The only good part was the funny stuff. Overall, it's entertaining-but in the wrong way. 3/10.
Cidade de Deus (2002)
Amazing and terrifyingly realistic movie.
I was going through the top 250 seeing which movies looked good and I came upon City of God. I was kind of skeptical at first because of the subtitles, but I got it anyways. The movie is very unique, taking the whole gangster concept to a different level, using young men who basically feel they have no choice but to become hoodlums and deal drugs. Rocket, the main character, is very likable and funny at times. I felt for the characters and thought the actors were very, very good. As I said, it seems so real, because if I'm not mistaken, it's based on a true story. It's kind of disturbing sometimes to see young kids dealing drugs, smoking, and shooting other people(or getting shot at), but it makes it very intense. I thought the subtitles were going to get really annoying, but I got used to them fast and they only bothered me a few times when they were talking pretty fast. Overall, I feel this movie is unique, awesome, and great. Very deserving of the high rating it has right now, 10/10.
The Dark Knight (2008)
Excellent movie. But not quite #1!
First off, I gave this movie a 10 because my standards for movies aren't high, and this one definitely exceeds. I know it sounds like I'm contradicting myself,(Giving it a 10 and saying it shouldn't be number 1) but in my book, this movie deserves a 10. Anyways, I loved the dark feel of the movie, as many other people have said. Christopher Nolan made Gotham perfectly. Heath Ledger did do an awesome job as the joker, and I feel he actually does deserve an Oscar for his performance. It was gripping, thrilling, and even pretty scary/intense at moments. Christian Bale also did very well as Batman, much better than everyone else who's done Batman in the past. The ending is great, one of the best ending's I've seen in a while. Overall, this movie was written great, and executed perfectly. Movies like this don't come around too often. Excellent, 10/10.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Hard to describe. Great anyhow.
Pulp Fiction is one of the few timeless movies that I have ever seen. Many people argue about the main message, I think you should just enjoy the movie how it is.
Pulp Fiction's about two gangster partners who are retrieving an extremely special suitcase for their boss. In the process, a man shoots 3 bullets at them, but they all miss. One of the gangsters recalls this as a miracle, or work of god, which later makes him decide to retire and simply "Walk the Earth". His partner, however, thinks this is a bit dumb and later gets killed by a boxer.
This boxer had been payed by the gangster boss, Marsellus Wallace, to lose his fight the night before. He has a dream about the day he received a watch that had been passed down in his family for a long time, and accidentally killed the other boxer. His girlfriend forgot to get his watch from his old apartment, which he knew Wallace was going to inspect, but he knew his watch was important enough to die for. So he got it back, killing one of Wallace's gangsters in the process. He soon meets Wallace himself as they are trapped by a pawn shop owner. The pawn shop owner and his friend start to rape Wallace, and the boxer escapes, but before he does, he kills the rapists with a sword, freeing Wallace, who forgives him a little bit.
Two robbers are robbing a restaurant that the two gangsters are eating at. One of the gangsters gives them $1500 and talks to one of them for a long time about a section of the bible. They then proceed to deliver the case to Wallace.
The plot weaves together(as the page says) these unrelated people in 4 stories of violence, humor, and guidance.
All in all, a wonderful movie never to be forgotten.
Dead Man on Campus (1998)
Pretty boring. A few funny parts, but that's about it.
This movie had a very good storyline. It was just executed poorly. The actors were OK, but I thought Gosselaar was kind of annoying. The funniest part was one of the mental guys they brought in who thought Bill Gates was trying to kill him. He was pretty funny, but they didn't have him in a lot of scenes. I didn't think it was close to Animal House, but then again, it is just my opinion. I thought the ending was pretty clever and kind of funny. That's about it for me though. I won't say it's overrated like many other people, because it's just my point of view, someone else might think this is the best movie ever. I wish they would have executed it a little bit better, it may have turned out kind of like Superbad. As I said, the plot was very good. Just some better dialogue, and maybe different actors. It would be kind of cool to see something like a remake. But that usually only happens with famous movies. Anyways, pretty boring.3/10.
Hostel: Part II (2007)
Very boring. Not close to the first film.
I was a pretty big fan of the first Hostel, so I was really anticipating the 2nd Hostel. I rented it the day it came out, then watched it. I was bored throughout the whole movie, even during the torture scenes. It wasn't original, too predictable. It just wasn't scary at all. There's a ton of blood and gore, with a poorly written script. It wasn't good. The ending was really weird, and a bit disturbing. The acting was OK, nothing special. I have no idea how it's got a 5.4 rating. Then again this is just my opinion, but I'd stay away from this movie if you're expecting it to be as good as the original. 2/10, Terrible.
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)
This movie really got me turned onto Tarantino.
This movie was really entertaining. The fighting scenes weren't greatly realistic, but they weren't really meant to be. There is a lot of blood, and it isn't for the faint-hearted. But, if you can stand bloody violence, then this movie is very, very good. The actors are surprisingly very good. Uma Thurman fit in the role of The Bride perfectly. All of the main villains do good,(but some of the minors are funny) but they made you kind of like them usually. Anyways, it may not have all been action-packed, but it gave you much anticipation of those parts. When the fighting scenes did come around, they were very entertaining to watch, and made me exclaim,"Whoah!". The ending left you wanting more, a great bit of a cliffhanger for volume 2. 9/10, great movie.
This movie really got me to start watching a lot of Tarantino movies, and he's become my favorite director now.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
One of the best horror movies of all time.
Nightmare On Elm Street was a wonderful movie! A catchy, creative script executed great with a good director and good actors, it succeeded expectations. I tried watching it with my friends, but they hated it because of the "magic" used by Freddy. But I didn't mind it, it was a bit corny, but it made him more scary. Freddy is a chilling character. He's probably one of the most creative and scary characters ever, and I thought they used him perfectly. They didn't show him too much, but just enough to make you wide-eyed every time he appears. The actors aren't wonderful, but they do an exceptional job. The only acting that bothered me was Heather Langenkamp's work on Nancy. I don't know why, she just kind of bothered me.
The ending was kind of dumb and corny. But it kind of worked as a cliffhanger, although they didn't use that cliffhanger at all ever again.
Anyways, one of the best horror movies of all time in my opinion. 9/10.
Get Smart (2008)
One of the funniest movies I've seen!
This movie is awesome. Steve Carrell does great in the lead role as 86. This is one of his funniest movies hands down. But the other actors are great, too. Anne Hathaway does a very good job as 99. But most notably, Dwayne Johnson as 23. I really earned a new respect for him after this movie. Not that he's as good as Carrell or anything, but it's the best performance I've seen by a retired wrestler or other star of some sort. Anyways, I wasn't expecting much from this movie at first, but it delivered and over exceeded my expectations.
The movie was funny all throughout. There were few breaks for more than 1-2 minutes without laughing.
The ending wasn't bad, but could have been better. I didn't care though
Overall, one of the funniest movies I've ever seen, especially for a PG-13. 9/10.
Mr. Deeds (2002)
Another pretty funny one from Sandler.
Mr. Deeds was a pretty funny movie. Much better than your average romantic comedy. I liked it because it didn't focus too much on the romantic part and a lot more on the comedy part. Most romantic comedies are all the same, but this one's a bit different. There are a few hilarious scenes, then the rest is just mildly funny. I don't mind this, but that's one of the reasons why I'm starting to not like PG-13 comedies very much. In rated R comedies, it's usually either kind of boring or hilarious. Most PG 13 comedies are just mildly funny. This one is a bit more than mildly funny.Although I was a little bit disappointed with how far they took the romantic part.
Overall, it was pretty good. 7/10.
Bruce Almighty (2003)
Very funny!
This movie was one of those comedies where there's a lot of hilarious parts, but a lot of boring parts. Usually those movies kind of get on my nerve, but this one had a pretty good storyline behind it. That made most of the boring parts have a bit of a point. So, it was a bit unbelievable, but funny. Also, unlike most comedies, the main character goes through a change. Bruce starts out as a bit of a jerk who likes to blame God for most of his misfortunes. Then, God notices this and meets Bruce, giving him his powers for a while. At first, Bruce uses the powers to only his advantage. He then notices how he can help so many other people and be a good person. So by the end of the movie, Bruce has gone through a massive change, now praising God for his good fortunes.
Overall, a very entertaining and funny movie. 8/10
Be Kind Rewind (2008)
Very funny. Creative idea.
Be Kind Rewind is a very good movie. First of all, the storyline is really creative and kind of weird. But, with two of my favorite actors(Def and Black), I knew I didn't want to miss it. The actors do a pretty good job, and are funny. There are a few kind of dumb scenes, but I didn't mind too much. It started out a little bit boring, but got funny pretty quick. It stayed funny basically throughout the whole film from there. The plot did get a little bit mixed up at times, but ended up all making sense in the end. The ending was surprisingly sad, but funny at the same time. I liked that. Mos Def and Jack Black need to do more movies together, they did a great job. The most I've laughed in a theater in a long time, it was good. 8/10
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
OK. Pretty good for 1968
This movie was pretty good for a movie made 40 years ago. There were some unrealistic parts, but it was one of the first scary movies ever in my opinion. It was actually pretty scary...Not as scary as some later movies like The Shining, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, so on.....
I really only liked Duane Jones' acting as the main character. He was pretty believable, and kind of likable. I didn't really like the rest of the actors, but it didn't matter too much to me.
I didn't really like the ending, it was kind of dumb and weird. But overall, it was an OK movie. Good for 1968. 6/10
Grandma's Boy (2006)
The funniest movie I've ever seen
First off, Grandma's Boy is a movie where there's a ton of crude humor, language, and sexual themes. So, if you don't like comedies like Superbad you probably won't like this one. The plot isn't too bad for this type of a movie. It is kind of corny, but the hilariousness makes up for that. The actors are great. My favorite would have to be Nick Swardson playing Jeff, he does a great job and is hilarious. Allen Covert does very good as a lead character in Alex, and Peter Dante does, in my opinion, one of his funniest movies. This movie had me laughing extremely hard almost the whole time. Overall, my favorite comedy movie of all time. Extremely funny, 10/10.
ATL (2006)
Surprisingly a lot better than I expected
First of all, I listen to hip hop, but, I listen to the good type. I absolutely HATE rappers like T.I and stuff...I recommend he switches to acting(same with Nelly). Anyways, putting away my disliking of the main character, I really enjoyed this movie. The actors were very good, much better than I expected. The story was surprisingly realistic and it was kind of sad, and funny at parts. Most of my friends say it's boring, but I don't know why, I just find it entertaining. My friends mostly think it's boring because the friends that haven't liked it have kind of short attention spans. A very simple idea, but executed wonderfully. Very good movie, 8/10
