Leave the World Behind (2023)
A riveting film that went literally nowhere.
The very best stories have an explosive climax and leave you feeling satisfied.
This film had no climax at all. Fascinating, mysterious, and... then it just stopped, basically in the middle of the story, and that's it.
No one lives, no one dies, nothing is resolved, no answers are learned, just stops. And the lack of ending causes all the walls of suspension of disbelief to come tumbling down in a pile of disappointment rubble.
And it has some ridiculously pretentious and artsy filmography. Like, we do not need to roll up to a view from above and then slowly pan out. It doesn't make the story better for the camera to climb the stairs upside down and backwards when there are no ghosts, ghoulies, or in fact any danger or drama whatsoever once you get there.
I'm sure someone thought this film had a point to make, but it was truly terrible storytelling. Yes, yes, we get it, everyone is too emotionally isolated from everyone else because of teh ebil technology. But, as the 'mom' in the story says... people are just awful, so what difference does it make? This film does nothing to prove her wrong, nor does it specifically vindicate her, but she's right regardless.
Firebite (2021)
More like this, please!
I want more, more, more unique, multicultural, global down and dirty urban fantasies. I'm so tired of the same old stories retold over and over again. This is definitely not the same old story.
I want to see TV producers and film makers taking more risks on new stories. Give us more complex, nuanced characters in situations where you can't be completely certain who's going to win! Show us more reality in places so many of us have never been, Teach us a little history, and then make it extra fun by bringing on the fangs and the magic!
There are too many people out there who don't want to look at the darker underbelly of today's world. Show it like it is, dig up every bit of it, and then sprinkle it with fairy dust so we can learn it without sinking into a depression for the rest of our lives.
Show us what they don't want us to see, fire some shots across the bow, but make it a good time so we don't lose hope.
Give us more like this!
Enterprise: Cogenitor (2003)
Good science fiction, bad Star Trek
I'd been enjoying watching 'Enterprise' right up until this episode.
Star Trek has always been about morality - about doing and demonstrating the right thing.
So what the actual heck was this? What message was this sending? Was this author REALLY trying to say that we should leave people oppressed if teaching them to want more will cause them to hate their life? That CULTURE is somehow more valuable than PEOPLE? I've never been so angry as I was after watching this episode. This should never have been accepted for Star Trek. This is the opposite of the values Star Trek has always promoted.
The Becoming (2012)
Epically awesome bad movie
A rare treat - a truly epic bad B-movie. It has it all - over the top musical score, hysterical acting, fan-film quality scripting and special effects, meander plot with inexplicable side-stories, and an outcome so pre-ordained you not be surprised by the ending. Best of all, it takes itself completely seriously. Highlights: vampiric demons. Random pimps and prostitutes in a side-story that has nothing to do with anything at all. GODPUNCH. Warp tunnels. And an angel wielding a lightsaber. You will be continually surprised. 9 instead of 10 because the slow parts go on just slightly too long to be fun in a couple of places.
Thale (2012)
They don't make films like this any longer.
This movie didn't get a 10 because, being low-budget, the CGI wasn't perfect. Apart from that, I thoroughly and absolutely loved it! The current era favors fast-paced films full of action, quick changes of scene, and tight plots that jump from moment to moment. This movie doesn't do any of that. It's slow, cerebral, quirky, very creepy, and full of wonder.
I don't think anyone has ever put the Hulder-folk into a film before, and it was wonderful to see this interpretation of them. Very much in keeping with the varied and mysterious folklore that they're based on.
I was a bit sad that it was so short!
