A Secret Love (2020)
Great true love story
I cried throughout this, one of those truly rare, genuine love stories. Beautiful, and I was surprised it wasn't rated higher. My only critique is that I wanted more. The odd tidbit from notes, photos, and letters to each other over the years hinted at a rich life together which was only briefly touched upon. Another hour would have been wonderful.
Around the World in 80 Days (2021)
Good production values, but a dull flop otherwise
For some reason the BBC decided to use the well-worn American trope of having the lead actor be a bumbling dolt. This combined with a very washed-out, dreary shooting style and side-story melodrama makes this a tough watch.
I have no problem with a modern interpretation of a classic tale done right - Sherlock Holmes comes to mind as an example of one the BBC did well. Injecting a mix of diversity is also fine. I think a brighter, more adventure-style reimagining with Idris Elba as the lead would have been fantastic For example.
Off the Air (2011)
Trippy - if you are already tripping
I'm pretty confused by the high rating. It's basically stock footage and low quality animation jumbled together based on a one word theme. It's like a first year film student had to produce a project in one sitting. Very dull, or perhaps too cerebral for me to "get it." There's a reason most of the reviews mention acid or psychedelics - you are unlikely to enjoy this sober.
Grant (2020)
Good, not amazing
I'm not a fan of the documentary style which uses actor reenactments combined with actual footage and voiceover. The reenactments tend to be poorly acted and low budget. The actors are pretty decent in "Grant" though and the cringe is generally kept to a minimum. Very interesting documentary about a great man who had a particularly hard life but rose to the top through integrity and grit. Covered his entire life but with limited depth as this is only a three episode mini-series. Worth a watch!
