Natsuyuki Rendezvous (2012)
Time to say goodbye
A bittersweet story about life, love, and death. A young widow tries to learn how to live in full again after the untimely departure of her husband. A young man falls in love with her. But there is a third party between them, and it's not just a memory - a ghost of the husband cannot leave his beloved behind. It's a beautifully animated picture, where reality is intervened with mythopoetic tropes of fair tales. Suspense is slowly building itself through the eleven episodes, and till the very end you don't know what will happen. But, thankfully, wisdom prevails upon the selfish desire of possession, and life is left for living.
The Happiest Days of Your Life (1950)
Much Adoe About Nothing in the boarding school
A genuinely hilarious comedy. I haven't laughed so hard for quite a some time. The British movie of 1950 is a perfect example of the classical genre of the comedy of situation. Additionally, I took a lot of pleasure in language itself. British English of the after war England sounds in three dimensions simultaneously: professors, pupils, and commoners (such as the groundskeeper). An excellent excursion into the morals and social life of those years as well. Strongly recommend.
Planetes (2003)
Plus ultra
As a child, I read many science fiction books (I still do!) and I was firmly convinced that I would see with my own eyes at least the first stage of human conquest of the New Frontier - the Space, at least in our Solar System. Now, I see a new impetus in the development of the space industry, which gives me cautious optimism. I believe that only a great dream can justify the existence of humanity. And this dream has always been associated with the discovery of the new and unknown. While watching this anime, I felt a kindred spirit of its creators. Despite all the obstacles, doubts and tragedies, people look at the starry sky and dream. And that is great.
Lone Star (1996)
Story of Lone Star
It is such a pleasant surprise when after many years since their premier you discover such gems of cinematography. A very good movie with good actors (young Matthew McConaughey with a short but extremely well played part, for example). All those things I like: an unhurried narrative that connects into a single story the threads of the lives of many characters of different backgrounds and social positions. Social problems are covered without didactics, but with a real human feeling. Revealing the mystery of a long-standing crime, the hero finds the answer to the main question of his life and reconciles with his past. I really enjoyed this movie and realised that I want to visit Texas again. I think this film really touched the essence of the Lone Star State in all its complexity.
Richard Jewell (2019)
a big hero of the little people
Clint Eastwood is the living embodiment not only of the American cinematography but of the American spirit as well. At least, the ideal I personally believe the American spirit is. He created many truly iconic characters as an actor and now we can enjoy another wonderful movie that he did as a director. 'Richard Jewell' is a movie based on the real events. It is a deeply psychological social drama. It is a story about modest hero, coming form the little people of America, the people that used to be called 'a silent majority'. He is everything that modern "progressive people" consider to be "not cool". He is white man with traditional views and deep respect for the law and order, with a figure of an officer of the law enforcement as a role model. He possesses guns, he shoots for the recreation with the NRA members, he hunts. He works honestly and he truly believes in the System. And the System fails him, the System uses him as a scapegoat, the System tears his life apart. This exact story ends well. But how many such richards were left unheard, alone with their despair? No wonder, that 'a silent majority' is no longer silent, that it rebelled against the establishment in the US - and we can see the same processes all over the world. Eastwood heard this story of the heartland of America. And he told it us masterfully.
The Big Bang Theory (2007)
A Story for life
Just finished the last episode of the last season of The Big Bang Theory. It's hard to believe it was twelve years ago, when me, my sister, and our friends started to watch this series. It's been a long and wonderful journey. I'm really grateful to everybody who was involved in this project. The BBT is so funny and nerdy, wise and humanistic, entertaining and telling you a billion interesting things about our Universe. Its characters truly became kinda family for all thankful fans all over the world. So many things happened during this dozen of years. To think about it, my life completely changed - and I like it a lot! As Sheldon said: changes are the only constant in our life. And I'm so happy that I still have my family and friends I used to have 12 years ago (though I live far away from majority of them now) - and I'm blessed to have now even more people that are really close to my heart! I am full of curiosity for the path that lays ahead :)
Krymskiy most. Sdelano s lyubovyu! (2018)
Shame for Russian aggressors!
I wonder if the Nazis filmed such comedies during their occupation of the Crimea in WWII.
