The Expanse (2015)
Amazing in every aspect
I spare you a lot of text and break it down into a few major bullet points:
1. Deep, multi-layered, believable and very interesting characters, played and brought to life by great actors.
2. A rich world full of interesting details, constellations of power, ships, stations, locations in general... There is so much interesting stuff to discover in all corners...
3. An epic overarching story with many interesting side stories.
4. Spectacular special effects and CGI - I mean space battles as much has the many small details like hand terminals and the like.
5. Design of sets and characters as well as the overall aesthetics are great as well.
I've seen A LOT of science fiction series in the last 25 years (not going to say "all of them)", but this is definitely among the best if not THE best series, I've seen so far.
Star Trek: Picard (2020)
Boring
I like ST a lot. Basically watched every movie and series several times with the exception of Discovery which I am not going to watch again. Also played some of the video games and listened to tapes and CDs :-P
In Picard, we've got a boring pseudo-mystery story which doesn't get me hooked at all (doesn't happen very often).
The characters of the main crew feel like a video game party. The super skilled "warrior", the super smart scientist, the mysterious captain, the troubled drug addict/thief etc. they feel insanely cliché and none of them is interesting. They are rather annoying and boring.
Some episodes are quite horrible - even with some kind of cringe factor.
Doesn't feel like the ST universe I used to know.
For the story lines.... I don't know. There is not a lot of science and not a lot of fiction, but a lot of personal drama and soap opera like interactions and drama between the charaters... I'm not really interested in that. I'd hoped to see some philosophical, ethical and moral questions being addressed as well as some adventure like story. But apparently that's not what the show is about.
I turned off the TV in the middle of episode 5 as I could not stand it anymore. This does not happen very often.
On the plus side, there is some fan service here and there with familiar characters who show up or are being mentioned and one dialogue was decent...
Sorry, but you can do better. Patrick Steward, JL Picard and Star Trek deserve better.
The Equalizer 2 (2018)
Extremely predictable and sickening inept
There is hardly a red line which you can follow through the movie, except that Denzel is just an incredible nice and helpful Samaritan with some OCD. So it's actually nice of the director to at least make everything super predictable.
Everybody who looks like a bad guy is a bad guy. And the wanna-be twist bad guy can be spotted half an hour before the clichéd reveal that we've seen in countless other movies. It's pathetic.
So while working the main "quest" our hero manages to solve several unrelated and uninteresting side quests in parallel just because he can and because apparently solving the main quest is not interesting enough for him... It certainly wasn't for us.
Four Lions (2010)
Just not funny...
The idea behind the movie is great i think. Joking about terrorists? sounds promising! But there are only ~ 5 scenes where i had to laugh for a second. Thats it. Usually you don't laugh about everything in a comedy, but usually the 95% of non-funny-scenes are not as much crap as it is here: Poor acting, shaking camera, dumb jokes, dumb storyline. Worse than non-funny-scenes are scenes intended to be funny but which aren't. The jokes are really really flat, dumb or whatever you want to call it. With one exception, there were no one laughing in the whole cinema-hall... do i have to say more?!
This movie is one of the very few, i felt like it was stealing my lifetime and cash.
Stargate Universe (2009)
You need to get used to it
If you give SGU a chance, you will most likely become to see, that it has its unique spirit and isn't that bad as you thought it would be (and as many reviews try to tell you).
Its not SG1 and its not SGA, its different. But, its a nice show too and it's getting better rapidly! I like SG1 very much and i like SGA too. I've watched every episode several times now. So i know, what i am talking about, i guess ^^ At the beginning of SGU, i was a little confused and didn't know what to think about it. Maybe I was a little bit disappointed too, cause I was hoping for something like SG1.
At first i didn't like the characters and the teenager-style of the show. But i came to see. that there are very interesting characters with a lot of possible character-development and relationships and that the series got more mature with beginning of the second half of season 1. There are a lot of possible story lines, enemies, friends, planets, ships, technologies, etc. I cant wait to see all this stuff! The possibilities are almost endless.
The setting is really not that bad! The ship is nice, has plenty of things to discover inside and in the universe and i am really excited about to see, how they manage to stay alive and maybe find home.
Episodes 1x08, 1x10, 1x11 and 1x12 are really, really damn nice episodes! I bet no SG fan wouldn't like them. The episodes are really well written, with a good amount of twists, humor and action.
I'd say, give SGU a chance, try to get used to it and watch at least the first 12 episodes! I promise, you wont be disappointed if you have done so!
The Hurt Locker (2008)
Boring, unrealistic, ridiculous non-authentic main character
I can't believe this movie won the Oscars. back than at the release, i gave it a 6 out of 10, not knowing that this movie would even be considered for nomination. i'll tell you why i rated it that way:
first of all, the main character is so damn NOT authentic. seriously, such an adrenalin addict would never ever made it into a position in which he had to defuse bombs... nor would he be very long in the military, if he would constantly get into other guys, or get drunk on the base. he's such an ass and i'll get angry just seeing him. not the actor, the character! if you'll get connected to him in any way, than in getting to hate him. great job! :P
than there is the shaky cam. i really hate that. i assume the directors want to distract from or hide the flawed scenes?! damn it, i want to SEE whats going on!! not to get a headache figuring out, what COULD be going on the screen!
many reviews have told this already: almost everything is so far away from reality. yeah i know, it's only a movie, but it's meant to be a somehow realistic depiction of war. one team going out alone? hunting bad guys in the streets and buildings, doing almost everything on their own? thats a joke. even better (watch out for the irony here): one guy running around all alone in the streets... sure, why not?! :P
the whole movie feels very slow. it's so slow, you have to try not to fall a sleep! in fact, you just want it to end. there is no real climax and i didn't feel any suspense... that's not what you want from an action movie. an if it's not meant to be an action movie, why do they constantly try to get so much action in it?!
in my opinion, this movie is on the same level as the usual steven seagal movies. i like the seagal movies for its "easyness" and plain, (often) stupid action plot and characters. you can relax and laugh here and there about how silly or dumb some things are, but the action is quite enjoyable. but that's exactly what you'd expect from a seagal movie, not what you'd expect from an Oscar winner! that's for sure.
