Cidade de Deus (2002)
Not recommended for those with weak constitution
Having lived in Rio de Janeiro during the 70's I recall all the violence involved with Cidade de Deus. During that period, that region became the synonym of violence. It was quite intriguing to see how fiction had treated the dreadful reality.
Shocking violence, dirty words, drugs, sex is on screen. The fact that it was part of a recent past society was shocking as well. This film is not made for those of weak constitution.
The structure of the film is a novelty specially in terms of Brazilian films. It is openly influenced by Matrix and Tarantino's style. Nevertheless it has a crystal clear Brazilian spice.
Have a look at it - prepare yourself in advance - however do try it and share your comments with us.
Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)
Dreamers
When you play with a puzzle you know what you are going to achieve but you do not know how long it will take, how you will get there or how the elements will get together. Everyone knows what will be the end of Amélie - but it is a great pleasure to follow the film and put the puzzle together.
The initial credits is a trademark of the director - pay attention to it or you will miss the point. The travelling garden dwarf is a symbol for lots of individuals who do not know that there is a world to conquer beyond the front gate. Yet it is said that the world is tough with the dreamers, it is worth being one of them.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)
Causing a commotion
Hardly ever have I witnessed a commotion in a movie theatre. It is ok if your partner cries or laughs out loud, but you can suspect that the film is causing a commotion when virtually everybody around is laughing really loud around you. This magic took place while watching My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
The movie is not flawless. The screenplay drops sequences of comic situations over the audience without focusing much - the main point is to laugh. The screenplay may fail sometimes but the overall comic feeling stays, and this is what counts.
Josie and the Pussycats (2001)
Far too light
Subliminar advertisement converts teenagers into ultra air-headed consumers in the film. Nevertheless, evident crystal clear advertisement fills up the screen outrageously all the time. This film is far too light-weighted even for the air-headed ones.
Memento (2000)
Notes
I confess I had to watch the film twice.
The first time allowed me to have a general idea of the greatness of the movie. Despite the ingenious editing, the screeplay respected all the essential elements to catch the viewers - a so-called classic radical movie.
Only during the second time I watched the movie could I tie the whole story.
Brilliant movie.
PS.: Thinking back now, perhaps I should have written some notes (tatoos) during the film so that I could have an idea of what was going on...
Proof (1991)
Do not miss it
Proof is one of those films one should not miss. It is one of those plots one would be proud of having thought of, yet you have not. This film combines several unlikely events together, forcing your mind to think over different perspectives. How come a blind man could take photographs. How could he ever trust a waiter or even his blackmailing maid. Confidence, mutual trust, is built and shattered along the film, leaving a bitter hope that the characters stick together for their own safety. Do not miss discovering this film. Mrs. Moorhouse provided us with a respectable film and we should be thankful to her.
Greenfingers (2000)
Clive Owen's face
It was Clive Owen's expression which most impressed me while watching this film. All over this simple and subtle film, pain is reflected on the hard serious face of Owen's character Briggs. He never slips into fake sentimentalism, keeping a straight line through the light comedy side of this film. But Briggs is always the backbone of this movie and Joel Hershman was lucky to have Owen with him. He was 'sowing the seeds of love', as Tears for Fears has sung in the soundtrack.
