Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023)
Oof.
An absolutely terrible waste of time. Wanted to leave very early on. Regretted staying for the whole movie. The music was dreadful - "Born to be Wild" really? The plot was dreadful and convoluted. Tried to find something, literally anything about this movie that I could enjoy but honestly I couldn't appreciate anything about this movie whatsoever. The "comedy" fell completely flat. And for all the explosions and activity on the screen it was the most boring thing I have ever seen on the big screen. The CGI was so messy and all over the place. I really didn't expect this to be as bad as it was.
The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
If you don't like it, you simply don't get it.
I wasn't sure what to expect, my partner saw this and said it was excellent but the way he described the plot it seemed like a dark comedy and little else. Watched it yesterday and didn't expect such a strong emotional response. I suppose being Irish, this film hits hard differently and in unexpected ways. There's so many societal factors that feature heavily in this, a lot of them we still perpetuate even though they cause us and the ones close to us harm. The heartbreaking and gradual realisation that Farrell's character simply cared more about not being liked or wanted by his long term friend than by what his friend needed to be happy hit home. The care Gleesons character still had for him was evident by defending him against the Garda of the island, but by that point it was too late for Farrell's character to recognise that his friend did care for him, he just didn't want him in his life any longer. The sisters heartbreaking loneliness, desire to be liked and accepted by her community and her tremendously brave decision to leave to carve her own life rather than stay in a familiar place hit very close to home. I'm not the most articulate, and feel so especially in tying to describe what makes this film so special. I can only commiserate for those who view it as a dark comedy and little else.
Halloween Ends (2022)
This is very, very bad.
Let me preface this review by saying outright that my expectations were very low. Like extremely low. I had skimmed through reviews and expected the worst.
But somehow this godawful excuse for a Halloween film managed to be even worse than I had expected. It's so bad that I came here to write this review before we've even finished it, just so I could distract myself.
There is no excuse for this contrived piece of garbage. And that's being polite. The sound mixing seems to be utter garbage as well, literally cannot hear half of what the characters are saying but at this point it's a blessing. I'm only grateful that I didn't spend money on going to this in the cinema and will instead spend Halloween this year rewatching the classics. I'll even relish watching Halloween Resurrection!
Dexter: New Blood: The Family Business (2022)
Did we all watch the same episode?
Had to leave a review because there's a few too many saying things like "I love how Dexter and Harrison got so close" - "Harrison never looked at Dexter like a monster" etc.
Did we all watch the same episode? It's clear there's a set up now that Harrison will either turn Dexter in, or kill him himself. They *were* close until Harrison watched how Dexter enjoyed toying with Kurt before he murdered him. Harrison saw the enjoyment Dexter got from the act, and since many didn't notice, this is the only episode where we actually see Dexter dismember a body in gory detail, showing us that Dexter really is a monster. Only one that we seem to keep rooting for. The camera kept cutting (pun only half intended) to Harrison while this whole scene played out and it clearly conveyed that he was trying to put on a brave face and justify the murders "you've saved thousands of lives", but realised that he was way in over his head, that his father is a murderer just like Trinity, and that that's going to be Harrison's fate, unless he turns Dexter in and changes his own ways.
Dexter indeed made a mistake revealing everything to Harrison and it's going to come back to bite him next episode. As much as I love Dexter, he simply doesn't deserve a "happily ever after", nor should this reboot have a second season. It would defeat the purpose of why it was brought was to begin with: to give a satisfactory ending to Dexter.
As stated above, Harrison will either turn him in, or kill him. Perhaps even both. I feel it wouldn't be right to let Dexter get away with his crimes again.
And Just Like That...: Tragically Hip (2021)
Oi vey.
Forgive me for the rant that follows.
The first part of the episode is akin to an episode of the Golden Girls with Carrie and her hip.
Forgive me, but I truly want to punch Charlotte in the face more with each week goes by. She is an intelligent woman, why is she behaving like an imbecile each episode? The acting - or overacting - is atrocious. It's as if she's speaking with a five year old when she speaks to literally anyone. Unfortunately, most of the characters each become more idiotic as the mini series progresses.
We're treated to typical Carrie who expects everyone to be at her beck and call and throws a strop - and literally wets the bed - when they aren't.
This reboot is a shadow of its former self. The show is clearly no longer about the characters and but instead about "how many current societal and racial issues can we work into the plot to attempt to make this show relevant"? These characters are supposed to be in their 50s, not their 80's, yet most of this episode made out like they were half-witted old ladies, needing a cane (you were grand the last couple of episodes, Carrie), alien to the notion of non binary/trans/gender fluid (don't they live in New York?) and even unable to tell when they're urinating (you have ears, girl). Honestly, Carrie was bordering on having dementia during this episode.
Really not understanding Miranda, whose character seems to be being retconned to fit in with the actresses real life sexuality. Great that Cynthia gets to have these interactions after years of having to - probably uncomfortably - act out romantic and sexual encounters with men, but this just feels forced because of that reason alone.
One of the most frustrating things is how drugs are handled. The fact is, is that Caffeine, nicotine, alcohol and cannabis are all drugs. When it suits Carrie, she'll have a cigarette and coffee every morning, yet she and Charlotte (who has no problem consuming alcohol) will shame Miranda for drinking alcohol (albeit it has become problematic consumption) and cannabis. Likewise, Miranda appears to be a high functioning alcoholic yet previously shamed her son and Che for cannabis use, yet turns around and consumes it next episode. Have the writers forgot the original series where they all consumed cannabis on several occasions? Caffeine use is celebrated openly, as is alcohol on multiple occasions. It's just a mess. It's clear that the writers are the ones who are completely out of touch, and unfortunately those misgivings are represented in the characters actions and words. Addressing problematic drug use is fine, but it's clear that societal and old fashioned biases "this drug is fine because it's widely acceptable and normalised in society, this drug is not because I don't understand it" are abundant when it comes to individual drugs themselves.
I don't know what this show is anymore, it's definitely not Sex and the City, more like "And Just Like That, They're Rendered Old, Vapid and Irrelevant". If my ire is overly apparent it's because of how this reboot has been handled. It is honestly a crying shame because these characters and their lives could and should have been handled with the class, dignity and respect they deserve after all these years.
And Just Like That...: Some of My Best Friends (2021)
Embarrassing.
I wonder did the writers actually believe they were being "on trend" and addressing "racial issues" with this one because they weren't and Jesus Christ, it was hard to sit through. This episode was embarrassing for all involved: writers, actors and viewers alike.
The episode should have been titled "Some of my best friends are ethnic" because that's what the episode (and entire mini series) proceeds to beat you over the head with with absolutely no substance to it at all. There's literally nothing else to say because this episode is just a sad attempt at an attempt to be "woke", topical and relevant. It's the equivalent of something that would have been broadcast in the early 1980's, except I don't think the audiences would have been insulted with characters that act mind numbingly idiotic: "I got you a coffee!" - "I got YOU a coffee!"
Want to highlight racial issues? Do it with tact and a modicum of actuality. Not like this steaming heap of embarrassment.
Reality Z (2020)
Angry? I was too! But...
First five episodes aside which are a direct adaptation of Dead Set (it says so in the titles which I bet you didn't watch and therefore had no idea it was an adaptation, and all you kept thinking in the first five minutes was "This is such a rip off!" and that's why you came here angrily to review this like I originally did!), and therefore will
Never be as good as the original, I quite like the other storyline. For anyone wanting to get a better idea before watching, it's a side story to Dead Set, which then becomes what happens after the end of Dead Set.
I was having a sick day on the couch and didn't want to read the subtitles, so I turned on the English dubbing which could be worse. I also turned on the English subtitles and the differences between what was being said in English vs what had been subtitled in English were staggering. Something definitely gets lost in translation.
Came here because I just watched the start of Epiosde 8, great scenes.
Anyway, angry prospective reviewers, just give it a go!
American Horror Story: The Lady in White (2019)
What a convoluted mess
Been watching this show since the beginning. I haven't enjoyed every season, and this isn't an exception.
The plot of this season is an absolute mess. Very poorly written, twists and turns thrown in at every junction that are not entertaining and just cheap and absolutely ridiculous. This episode takes the cake in that regard.
I expect to suspend my disbelief watching a show like this, but this is asking far too much.
I expect the finale of this season to be just as bad as last seasons.
Not much else to say except that David Carroll Lynch is the only saving grace of the season.
Preacher: Deviant (2019)
It's the last few episodes...
.... yet there's time to waste on a pointless plot of Eugene putting his mouth up to a glory hole in the bathroom?? He has trouble speaking, not trouble hearing. The guy clearly did not want toilet paper. It wasn't a funny joke, and the whole segment served no purpose other than to fill some time and get Eugene and The Saint a vehicle.
Episode just feels lost in the show as a whole. Just seems like just a "We need to get the characters from A to B" episode. Hoping for much better in the final few.
Jersey Shore (2009)
Hilarious trash tv
I can't believe it only has a 3.6 rating. Sure it's no Game of Thrones but this is binge worthy, trash tv at its finest. Think Friends but everyone's drunk and arguing 70% of the time. It's hilarious, and always cheers me up. I love it!
