47 Ronin (2013)
A Beautiful Tale
I am familiar with the historical tale of the 47 Ronin. I thought that this film was very interesting and visually beautiful. I am a big Keanu fan, and I thought that he was great in this. I am also a very big Hiroyuki Sanada fan, and he was, as always, impeccable. For those of you who boo hoo the "historical Innacuracy," read the history of Japan sometime. It's full of Gods and Goddesses, witches and demons.
Wild Wild Country (2018)
Sexism and bigotry at its best
The film is riveting. The two things that struck me about what happened are:
1. The townspeople and Iregonians in the film came off worse than the Tajneeshees and ,
2. All that stuff about it being Ma Amanda Sheela's Fault only, and letting the Bhagwan escape totally unpunished is a bunch of crap. It's obvious that everything came directly from the Bhagwan. Why am I not surprised that only the women got screwed?
Get Low (2009)
The best movie I've seen in 30 years!
The cast, the story, the writing, the scenery, THE ACTING!!!
OMG!
If you are an actor, I urge you to see this movie right away.
I am going to see it again.
Robert Duvall, Bill Murray, Sissy Spacek - what's not to like? Seriously.
I love Robert Duvall. I've loved him since THX1138 (which eerily predicts our current societal dillemmas of wage slavery, drug use to cope with a life disconnected from nature, and the use of sex and violence in media as an emotional outlet) but I digress.
Duvall is splendid here - magnificent. He is a national treasure.
The Godfather Part III (1990)
I wish I had known what a great movie this was years ago!
I had always heard that part III sucked, so I had never seen it until this year (2006). What a treat! So many profound scenes as Michael loses his last chance for the redemption of his soul and everyone he loves.
I never realized Andy Garcia was so handsome! He's so charismatic in this film. He is up to Pacino's level, and, what a great thing for an actor to play Don Corleone! Wow! The scene in the opera is fantastic - the anti-baptism/assassination.
I didn't think Sofia was that bad. And I thought Keaton was fantastic during the scene on the steps after Mary's death - I was quite amazed at how she totally lost it - never saw her do that before! Thank you, Francis Ford Copola, for writing and directing the best movies of all time. Apocalypse now is still my rank for #1 of all time - but this movie was really great to watch after all these years. I should remember not to listen to critics and public opinion about great movies - they are so often wrong!
Apocalypse Now (1979)
The Greatest American Movie I Have Seen
The performances of the entire cast are only one aspect of the greatness of this film. The cinematography, the investment of time, people and ordinance, the color, the light!!!!! Who has ever produced the color and light on FILM of scenes such as the ones where Kurtz is partially illuminated in the darkness of his compound? The stunning combination of visuals, sound, and music; the hypnotic quality of the story with the heat and wet of the jungle; the profligate use of alcohol and drugs, and the indecent horror of the madness of the Vietnam conflict create a surreal, moving, and larger than life fable with example after example of archetypal dialog. "Never get off the boat!" "They were going to make me a Major for this. And I wasn't even in their . . . Army any more." "A little fishing accident on R&R." Thank you, Francis Ford Coppola. Thank you Writers, Cinematographer, Producers, Cast and Crew for this mind-bending and terribly beautiful meditation on the madness of war.
Tasogare Seibei (2002)
Perhaps the greatest movie I have ever seen
This amazing film weaves together themes of grief, integrity, poverty and social position, love and honor.
A truly developed character study with heart and suspense, too! I hope to watch this movie again and again. I am so grateful that this film appeared on several "best of" lists so that I could become aware of fit and see it.
Everyone is represented - the poor, the wealthy, the proud, the humble, the skilled, the unfortunate, young, old and middle aged. Please do not read any reviews with spoilers as it will ruin the experience of the film for you.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)
My new favorite movie
I have seen this film twice and will see it again. Everyone in the film is wonderful, with the exception of Angelica Huston, whose one note portrayal of a bitchy wife/ex-wife is a puzzle. It is fun to see Bud Cort in another great movie - Harold and Maude rocks! There is both amazingly funny comedy and touching drama, AND the music is phenomenal - just hearing the Zombies "The Way I Feel Tonight" is worth the price of admission. Seu Jorge is a natural doing the GREAT Bowie classics in Portugese accompanied by acoustic guitar! At least SOMEONE still knows how to make a decent movie in Hollywood! Sure to become a cult classic. Too bad it didn't kill at the Box Office!
Osôshiki (1984)
One of my favorites of all time.
This is a brilliant movie with nuanced performances. I laughed, I cried, I rented it again! From the same folks who brought us Tampopo and A Taxing Woman, this family story is dramatic and touching. The older woman who plays the dead man's wife is truly moving in her performance as the much-ill treated wife.
