The Guardians of Justice (2022)
Pure Velveeta
Roger Corman + WWE + Justice League + Watchmen + Brokeback Mountain. The ripoff factor is blatant. The cheese is thick. The costumes are budget. Yet I watched the whole thing. I enjoyed how every DDP scene felt like a wrestling promo. I also like the use of video game themes and animation cutaways.
Murderville (2022)
I guffawed
This is a very funny show. The guests must improv their way through it and I thought it was hilarious. It is formulaic, but that's ok. Will Arnett is hilarious and carries the show. I never knew he had such great improv chops. Very funny.
The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (2022)
Stinker....
It's like reading a satire comic from a 1910 newspaper. I know it's supposed to be funny, but I just can't see how. I sort of feel like the jokes on me in the end because I think I am supposed to laugh, but can't. It's really not good and I want to like it. I think Bell is awesome, but even her awesome comic chops can't pull this out of the ditch. Bad writing is bad writing.
Strappare lungo i bordi (2021)
Moving, funny and beautiful
I just finished watching this and it is a wonderfully told masterpiece. As someone who suffers with anxiety, I really identify with Zero. It is very spot on. I was moved to tears in the closing moments and that hardly ever happens for me. It is animated, but tells a story that is more real than 90% of what is out there. I loved this show very much and I hope there is more to come. You should watch this if you suffer from mental health struggles or if you want insight into how your loved ones perceive their everyday life. Beautifully done. Thank you, Zero.
Chernobyl (2019)
Gripping, Amazing and Jaw Dropping
This is one of the best mini series I have ever seen. It is beautifully shot, wonderfully acted and well written. I found myself talking to my tv like a crazy person during several scenes. The humanity and sacrifice, the cover-ups, the close calls. The actors are top notch. The attention to detail on the sets are impeccable. It really is THAT good. Watch it.
The Little Things (2021)
Snoozefest with zero resolution
This is a movie that feels like it's 4 hours long. Despite the star studded cast, it manages to be terrible somehow. Rami Malek's and Denzel Washington's characters are cliche and poorly written. Leto's performance is the only reason this gets two stars instead of one. Characters in the movie behave inexplicably and seem to have no common sense. Even with level of obsession or fear that is supposed to be portrayed, they make head scratching choices for a film that is supposed to be gritty and noir. That starts from the very first scene when the target pulls her car off the road into a dark, closed gas station while she is being chased. There is zero motivation for someone to do that. At least write that she ran out of gas or popped a tire or something believable. Then, again later in the movie when the trained star detective, Jimmy, gets in the car with the suspect, leaving his partner behind, to see where the missing girl is. No trained detective would willingly behave like that. It's groan inducing. Then you get zero resolution at the end of the film. None. I know they intended it to be about obsession, but throw the audience a bone. They are vested for two hours of time and deserve to know what happened to the murderer. Frustrating, disappointing and pointless movie.
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
Pretentious, discombobulated circle-jerk
How did this win an Oscar? It's like a Kevin Smith movie minus the funny, with no plot and an annoying drum set or a Wes Andeson movie minus the endearment, humor and character depth. A big ol Hollywood circle jerk of over acted tripe that attempts to pass itself off as legitimate under the word satire. The reviews must be getting pumped up because I cannot see why people would enjoy this self absorbed garbage. Manos The Hands of Fate has more artistic merit than this movie. Just awful. There were no redeeming qualities, no exciting moments, nothing to make you care about the characters. In short I want two hours of life - that will never return - back. If there is a joke here, it's on whoever paid to watch this movie.
28 Days (2000)
What am I watching?
This movie seems to have been made in a vacuum by people who have zero experience with the subject matter they are half-heartedly attempting to tackle. It seems if you were going to make a movie on the subject of rehab, alcoholism and addiction, you would at least consult with someone who had some experience with it. It is evident by scenes like her arrival at rehab and first lunch that the director and actors are working off of third hand knowledge of what it is really like. People that are experiencing a 30 day rehab do not look good, clean-cut and made up. It is a shame that a film like this saw the light of day. Movies such as this further perpetuate false stereotypes about addiction and recovery. It is a gut wrenching and emotional experience to go through and this film takes the gritty subject and transforms it into Shakespeare in love style rom com trash. It was a terrible movie.
It (1990)
They forgot the "SH" in front of the title
Pretty awful. The adult acting of "The Loser's Club" cast is terrible. It's sad really, because the book is great and some of the adult cast are decent actors. Tim Curry does do a wonderful job as Pennywise the Clown. I guess a rewrite to 20 minutes and a renaming to, maybe "Scary Clown" was not in the cards. The characters behave in a completely unnatural fashion. The kid sequences are somewhat forgivable due to the actors being children. The special effects, while likely cutting edge in the 1990's, do not stand the test of time at all. The shower sequence and the spider scene at the end are examples of this. It is cool to see a young Seth Green playing a role. I remembered being scared as a small child watching it, but as an adult, it's a real stinker. Go read the book if you want the real deal, your imagination is your friend on this one.
