Close to Me (2021)

Good thriller with some new themes/aspects
13 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I'm sad to see that the rating so far is not higher. I do not agree with some of the reviews in here saying it has a simplistic portrayal of men and women (being all bad/good.)

This is a major spoiler but to get to the heart of it: Rob (especially because of the ep. Showing his point of view) was portrayed in a nuanced way and I really felt a lot of sympathy for him. I understood why he cheated but the main lesson, as I see it, was that he (and her father) tried to kill their spouse. That is a very extreme thing to do and therefore not something you can recover from as a couple (or in any kind of relation.) I think they show the effect of such an action really well (also how it had affected her as a child witnessing that, ex hurting herself afterwards.) And it should make the audience wonder why.. why did he feel entitled to do that?

But of course there is a lot more to the show than that, so it would be a shame reducing it to that.. the tension, build up, drama etc worked really well overall. And I liked getting some new insights into head trauma, dementia, menopause, grieving a child and couples at this stage in life. There are several nice men in the show, not-so-nice women, and the main characters being both bad and good at different times (like real human beings.) It's up there with some of the really good British dramas so I hope people will give it a shot despite the rating.

The Magicians (2015–2020)
9/10
Never before have I disliked all the characters and still liked something this much because..
8 February 2018
Constant surprises! This show is a fresh take on all the topics you could ever imagine being linked to the umbrella topic that is "magic".

Yes all the characters are annoyingly teen-like despite being in their 20's, with the usual designated roles; the nerd, the bitch, the shy girl etc.

Yet this show is so (!) inventive with how magic is portrayed. I feel like the writers are very much aware of how annoying the characters are (haven't read the books btw) and portrays them this way in order to create this very fast, quirky and weird plot. There's simply not enough time to dwell on the characters while at the same time having this crazy and quite complicated plot unfolding.

The characters in a way becomes secondary to the topics being discussed, the underlying topic being the role, function and meaningfulness/or not of magic.

(Edit: having re-watched the entire show and going on season 4 I have come to actually like the characters. They have grown more complex and I no longer find them shallow which is a big plus.)

It is very 'in your face' and informal, with a lot of swearing and sets/costumes that sometimes look like a high-school play setup.

This show has made me: scared: it has one of the most terrifying characters I have ever come across in a show; it has made me think (on the definition of magic, on the experience of time, of death, of evil..) ; and made me laugh: It has a lot of humor, not in a 'one joke after the other' kind of way, but in the absurdity and craziness that is the show.

There are some VERY dark themes being explored in it, but it manages to do so in a way that doesn't leave you feeling down after watching it. For me partly because I didn't care too much about the characters, but I did care a lot about the plot so I kept watching, and kept being amazed at the inventiveness and strangely light and playful way it is written and delivered.

Just watched the latest episode of season 3 and Im still loving it!

Be patient: its worth it!
14 May 2017
I'm glad I stayed patient and kept on watching. Through the first couple of episodes the main characters actually annoyed me quite a bit.. also I don't normally like sitcoms. But then it changed and the characters grew on me.. and now I love them and the show. It has made me laugh a lot and I feel like I've gained entrance and insight into an environment I knew little about. Now on season 4 it might be getting a little repetitive but I love it too much to stop so Im gonna hope it catches up to its former glory.

P.s. I love Jared
