The Hand That Robs the Cradle (2023)
Average and predictable
WARNING THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS
Whilst the premise of the film is good and I like the play on the name but I wasn't blown away nor get a strong gust from this.
From the outset it was clear that Mrs Tubbs was in on it so wasn't a surprise when the alleged plot twist occurred. In addition some of the acting wasn't that very good especially from Joel, his emotions were pretty poor.
I also can't understand why the original mother one minute has boils on her face when off her medication, I can understand acting out of character, but then the next she's a normal woman glowing days later.
OK it's maybe worth a watch but personally I find plenty to pick holes at.
Only Fools and Horses (1981)
Genius British comedy
This show is perhaps the best British sitcom of all time. I felt the need to write a review on response to the last review chronologically. This show hit new levels post 1990 and I'm aghast the last reviewer felt the need to remark should have ended in 1990. I'll agree 1996 should have been the end ad the final trilogy with the exception of the very last episode which was very clever and wrapped it up well.
The feature length episodes were excellent with the addition of Raquel and Cassandra adding real value and a new dynamic to the trotter family.
A show upu can watch again and again but sadly so much has been cut over the years to satisfy copyright, TV schedules and modern thinking of politically correctness.
Our Ladies (2019)
Heart warming story of friendship and sex
The thing that gets me about imdb is the so called movie experts who feel the need to pick every little thing wrong with a movie as opposed to just enjoying it for what it is...Entertainment and in this case I felt it delivered.
This is a fun movie with romantic 90s references. A little silly at times but I enjoyed it. Good acting, good soundtrack and a decent story set amongst stunning scenery.
Give it a watch and ignore the keyboard experts.
The Last Bus (2021)
Emotional and moving
I wanted to watch this as much of it was set in Dunure where I'm from. Timothy spall does a fantastic job of an elderly man on a quest of returning home to make good on a promise he made to his late wife.
I can relate to his story and understand the pain he and his wife felt for much of their lives. This is a very being story where you realise people are more important than a phone and everyone has a story to tell no matter heir age.
Stunning scenery, strong acting and a beautiful soundtrack alongside a simple script concept. A fantastic watch.
Sunderland 'Til I Die (2018)
Stunning
I saw his advertised for weeks and never thought I'd fancy it then one night was bored and thought what the heck. I'm so glad I did. This is perhaps the best fly on the wall documentary I have ever seen. What makes it so special is the sheer intimacy of it. The camera work, the interviews, the fan emotion, the staffs highs and lows. It really is special. I read that the players hated it and I can see why. No one would want a camera crew following you for a season but it really has raised the profile of the football club. I'm not a Sunderland fan but I found myself looking ahead at their results and really rooting for them even though I knew the outcome. The best thing about it for me as a football fan was a real look behind the scenes as to what goes on at a football club other than the 90mins. Deadline day, the politics, the prep work, player apathy etc. It really does show football in a different light.
Every week I now look at the Sunderland scores and the lineups now knowing many of the players and for me this demonstrates just how impactful this series was. Massive well done to the creators.
A Shot at Glory (2000)
Enjoyable movie
Watched this on a recommendation from a friend (a rangers fan) and was surprised that i actually enjoyed the movie. Being a Scot a lot of the football footage, the players and stadiums were familiar and even sometimes it was hard to tell that a lot of it was computer generated, in fact it was better done than Sky Ones Dream Team! Tell me was it Cliftonhill that Kilnochie are meant to be based? The fact that many of the players were in fact footballers made it more realistic to watch unlike Dream TEam where its all just actors I found it both funny and good that McCoist was an ex Celtic player and i was pleased how he hated that sectarian hatred in the Old Firm. References to 'its only a game' was just what this country needs and i admire his bravery in taking upon a role that saw him (albeit superimposed) in a Celtic shirt when he is a Rangers legend.
Anyway once i got over some of the dodgy accents (and what would the English guy know about Scots accents Wolfman?) i really enjoyed the movie, any football fan can relate to the fans and i just loved the guy that could just not watch the game, we have all been there! Its all about the underdogs the Scottish Cup and the movies name reflects this. The romance of the cup, the days out, the buzz in the town, its all captured terrifically and being a fan of a 2nd division team i know! All in all a good film and recommended, especially to fans of the bigot brothers where religion has no place in this film. You may just enjoy it!
Still Game (2002)
Scottish comedy at its finest!
There are some mixed opinions i see, and i guess thats what its all about. However firstly may i add that this series is massive North of the border and you do need a Scottish sense of humour to really enjoy this. I can't see the English enjoying this at all since either side of the border differ greatly on tastes.
The 1st series was outstanding, the 2nd not quite as good but still up providing plenty of laughs. The 3rd has just finished and i have to say it was fantastic!
You really won't get this if you need it translated south of the border and i hope they don't decide to screen it in England as BBC Scotland has been told they must tone down the Scottish slang if they do.
Its a fantastic outlook on how poor weegie OAP's go about their daily routine, still thinking they are in their 20's, quite simply a breath of fresh air from the traditional American and English comedies
Bring on series 4 lads!
The Office (2001)
Outstanding
I still find it amazing that there are some out there fail to enjoy such a breath fresh of air to British comedy. The Americans seem to be divided, some dont get it and others love it, it just shows how both sides of the Atlantic differ in TV tastes.
I saw the 1st series when it was originally screened, it followed Coupling on BBC2 which i was a fan of and gave it a shot, I HATED IT, but it grew and grew and grew on me and before long i had to get the DVD. Its like one of those songs you hate at first and before long you end up buying it! I just couldn't see what everyone else was raving about but it just took me a little longer to be swept away with one of the most talked about comedies in recent times. Even now when i have watched episodes time after time i still laugh and laugh which is not so much the case with Seinfeld or Friends.
All in all a classic, nothing short of it, to those who never 'got it' give it time, many of you i'm sure will be won over. The xmas specials put a nice finishing touch to it and sadly we won't be seeing any more of Gervais's gem. Lets just hope the American version does not ruin it, they can't seem to pull copy's off (Red Dwarf, Coupling etc) but with Ricky having a hand in it im sure it will get past the pilot!
Red Dwarf (1992)
Not even funny!
Its interesting to read the American quotes comments above as they seem to enjoy it more than the rest of the world, perhaps they were not entirely wrong about the way the depicted it. IMO however, from a 'British' perspective this is complete drivel. The acting is sooooooooo bad its beyond belief. Its bad one-liners, what the yanks are so good at, and the audience laughter at every little thing is just annoying! OK so the original lacked effects and was made 16 years ago but to this day its a classic. You cant throw in poor jokes poorer actors and fancy sets and effects and expect it to work
On the flip side of the coin, 'The End' screened in 1988 in the UK did not have many viewers either, it went from strength to strength from the off-set.
Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps (2001)
An entertaining comedy
I never watched this on its first airing but have done so on UK Gold re-runs. I found this to be extremely funny with a talented cast.
You either love it or hate it, but its classic, a sort of cross between Men Behaving badly and Coupling. Honestly give it a try, like coupling we can all relate to the storylines.
A realistic comedy
Seinfeld (1989)
Simply unique
Just like football sorry "soccer" never quite made it in the US, Seinfeld never quite made it in the UK but does have some avid fans. The 9 seasons of this is simply fantastic and shows a unique outlook on life we can all relate to. The characters are sublime and its surely a series that wasn't cut due to its lack of popularity.
