How to Meet Girls from a Distance (2012)
hysterical!!
It's unnecessary to say this film was made with a ridiculously short amount of time and money, because it didn't matter. It is side-splitting funny, with some truly brave and clever comedy! I was hooked from beginning to end. The film is completely surprising. It kept me guessing, but provided a feasible bread-crumb trail of clues to result in a truly satisfying ending. I was fully engaged in the character's quirky lives. The script is brilliant, and the performances charming. Although this is a Kiwi film, it's not encumbered with any culture other than the universal trials of love. Highly recommend this film for anyone who's ever tried dating.
Hunter Prey (2010)
Stunningly beautiful movie!
I wasn't sure what to expect from the first 15 minutes or so of the film other than a feast for the eyes with breathtaking cinematography in a stark and harsh environment. I could feel how hot it was, how uncomfortable, and difficult.
But once Clark Bartram removed his head gear, I was completely engrossed. It became personal, and his performance was incredible. It's a story in which you have to pay attention. It doesn't spoon feed you like most films today.
It's a subtle characterization of two guys, set against each other because of war, both willing to do anything for their cause, and yet both endearing and likable. I found myself rooting for them both, knowing that it was impossible for them both to succeed.
As much as the captivating images held my attention, I would have loved to know more about the two main characters. I was hanging on for more scarps of information, which I got closer to the end. Perhaps that was the intention of the filmmaker, as it was a deliberately slow paced film which set the mood of yearning and hardship.
I thoroughly enjoyed this refreshing, visually stunning, old style, character-based sci fi. My hats off to the director and everyone involved in bringing this film to fruition. I am dying to see a making-of. I'm sure there are big stories to tell and lots to be learned from what must have been an intense and arduous journey in film making, on a teeny tiny budget. I've loved reading the articles but am holding out for a full "behind the scenes" please! Not to mention, the next film from this talented director.
