Lift (I) (2024)
6/10
An OK remake of a 40yr old movie
4 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
1980 - Burt Reynolds, Leslie-Anne Down starred in the movie ROUGH CUT. This was a heist film with a creative plot involving a mid-air diamond heist.

Flash forward 45 years (I rounded up) and swap diamonds for gold and you have LIFT. Lift has a talented cast and I'll admit that Kevin Hart has grown on me over the years. The story line is not as believable as Rough Cut but it was creative and the CGI was good. I thought the movie was creative in how it worked the original Rough Cut story and made for a fun watch.

And a funny coincidence both have just about the same IMDB rating. Lift 5.5 and Rough Cut 5.7.

Delightful coming of age film
27 August 2023
I can't say that I'm an Adam Sandler fan but i have liked some of his work. This film is one of them.

I was exhausted and decided to crash in front of the TV. I started Netflix and the movie started before I could see what else was on. I was too lazy to change it.

Sandler did a put together a very enjoyable and poignant film. The writing is good as are the directing and editing. His daughters have talent and felt at home in their parts. And I just loved Luis Guzman as a Jewish father.

The movie is obviously a coming of age film and it depicted the trauma and joy that can engulf a family, in this case Jewish, at a critical developmental point in life.

What a pleasant surprise
5 August 2023
I fully expected this film to disappoint, boy was I wrong. I n ow condsider it the sleeper of 2021.

The acting was very good as was the editing and directing, and Christopher Lloyd was a hoot as the father.

The Dodge Challenger is unmistakenly a reference to the 1971 movie Vanashing Point starring Barry Newman, as Kowalski.

Both Kowalski and Hutch are using a white Challenger to get home to their families .

However, the writers got the engine size wrong for a 1972 Chalanger at 4.9L The correct engine size would have been 318ci ((5.2L) or 340ci 5.9L . The Kowalski car was a 1970 with a 440CI (6.2L)

It's over the top but.....
12 October 2022
This film is extremely campy.

The acting is over the top especially for the Nazis. If you want evil maniacal Nazis you'll find them here.

If you're going to have an actor claim to be from Brooklyn, give him a Brooklyn accent.

The planes are great and it is always a thrill to watch in the air. If you've never had an opportunity to see these birds in the air, do yourself a favor and try to catch an air show. They are loud and beautiful and a sight you'll never forget.

The cliches abound, but how can you have a WWII move without cliches.

My only real complaint is after Holden saves the world they never resolve the fate of the other prisoners.

Not a great flick but a fun watch.

Decent Actioner
2 July 2022
Decent film and decent acting, and good cinematography.

Is definitely a watchable film.

Pretty much Sudden Death moved to a soccer stadium.

That said, Sudden Death with Van Damme is the better film. Forget the Michael qjai White Welcome to Sudden Death.

In the alternative watch this during soccer play-offs and Sudden De as th during the hockey playoffs.

Good comedy
24 June 2022
Excellent cast for an absurd plot.

I'm starting to like Kevin Hart's films. He handles his parts well, and is maturing nicely into films.

This is just a fun comedy involving mistaken identity.

An average series that is worth a watch
16 May 2022
My issues with this series is the lead. Manuel Garcia-Rulfo looks like he's out of his medium. He appears stiff and too serious. He is also missing the the panache that Matt McConaughey brought to the part.

Mediocre writing also did not help

If you can get McCoaughey out of your mind, and forget the original movie it will help you enjoy this series.

How It Ends (2018)

Will there be a "How it Ends 2" ?
21 April 2022
I like to keep reviews short.

Here I'll start at the end.

This is the worst ending since the 1965 "What's New Pussycat?" Which by the way is worth a watch even 63yrs later. This was when Woody Allen did some of his best comedy writing.

As others have said the writers appeared to run out of ideas by the time they reached the end. Perhaps the movie was running too long? Maybe the CGI was going to push them overbudget?

Whatever the reason the question arises where was the ending going and what brought on the apocalypse. We never find out.

The talent was good and made the movie watchable otherwise.

Finally, It's hard to believe that Hollywood gives us a reason/understanding as to why you might want to carry a gun. Amazing!

Entertaining but.......
19 March 2022
The actors have decent reps but they held back on their talent in this one.

There are lots of plot holes that hit you in the face.

But, it still makes an interesting watch.

The 60s the time of Elvis and Teen Movies
8 February 2022
The '60s were a time when Teen Movies were either Beach or Car Flicks and Elvis was peaking as R&R started to change post the British Invasion.

The formula was simple fun music and some really fine cars and an absurdly dumb story line. It worked for Annette and Frankie so why not Elvis.

Just put your brain in neutral and enjoy the ride, no heavy thinking required.

Will this be the start of a new Buddy Movie Series?
12 November 2021
It's a heist movie. It's an action flick.

And it is a Buddy Film.

I was hesitant to mention with my initial write-up but of all the comparisons out there for this movie the one that hit me the most, and perhaps because of my age, was a comparison to The Road to....... movies with Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and Dorothy LaMour. It's all there the buddy film, the double-crosses, the romance aspect, and of course the comedy. Homage can be found to many films here but you can't neglect the Road Series.

The Chemistry is there between The Rock and Reynolds. Their interactions and timing are there. And they were just plain fun to watch together. I can see them teamed up this way again.

The writing was good. Filming, editing and effects were good.

And no, I did not forget Gal Gadot, she's always a joy to watch and played off Rock and Reynolds well.

This film is easy to enjoy.

It's not Oscar material, but........
20 October 2021
An original idea out of Hollywood, finally!

An interesting plot that slowly fills in the details and slowly brings the story together.

It would appear to be a thriller but I found plenty of comic relief to keep me going.

Megan Fox is good, I don't think she could ever be great.

The 2 thieves come come off as a serious version of Harry and Marv (Home Alone).

This is an enjoyable film, have fun.

Why?
17 October 2021
Why would you take an hour and a half slasher film and turn it into 8-9hr drag out deal.

The acting is OK, the writing mediocre.

Hard to find any empathy or sympathy for these characters.

"Rear Window" with some good twists.
21 September 2021
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started watching this film and figured it would be an updated "Rear Window".

It comes on like an erotic/sensual "Rear Window" until the plot twists kick in. They keep your interest up and surprises are numerous

Definitely worth a watch. Sit back and enjoy

Acting, Direction, writing all are reasonably good.

They kept the interest level up
29 August 2021
I'll keep it short and sweet.

The first episode had a familiar ring to it. But they managed to keep me watching. We pretty much binged the rest of it.

The plot line kept shifting enough to keep you guessing where it would turn, and I didn't see the ending coming.

Enjoy!

Skip the 2020 remake, this is the one to watch.
5 August 2021
Ok, this is Van Damme but compared to the 2020 Michael Jai White remake it is Oscar material.

It's a good action flick. The casting, script, acting, filming and editing all come together to make it a fun fun to watch.

Starship Troopers on Earth
3 July 2021
First, I enjoyed the movie. They did manage to keep things moving as long as you could put your brain in neutral.

The casting, acting, filming/editing were all good.

We get through the basic premise of the movie and are moved to the future and I start wondering where are Rico, Dizzy and Carmen. The Alien scenes could be straight out of Starship Troopers but moved to a terrestrial location. Lots of similarity to Edge of Tomorrow as well.

The plot holes are huge. The biggest being that we were able to develop time travel and automatic return in 30yrs but could not figure out how to destroy the aliens before all humanity was nearly lost, yet suddenly they isolate the answer in 24hrs.

The plot holes in the end scenes are also gaping, but I'll not post them so as not to run the plot.

The trick to enjoying the film is to, as I said, put your brain in neutral and don't get too analytical.

Based on the "Bigger Idiot" theory
18 February 2021
A couple of irresponsible millennials decide to go camping, it's down hill from there. The story is so twisted that if it wasn't so bloody you'd think it is a comedy. The character development is bad, and non- of them prove likable. There are too many tragic persons but you can't find sympathy for them. Editing is mediocre. And even the title is misleading

The story line sounded familiar but the writers were creative enough to keep it interesting and the actors played it well. The scenery was fantastic.

Definitely worth the watch

A good character study
1 June 2020
A 2 person, 1 act, dialogue play.

Stanley Tucci is excellent as usual I was not familiar with Alice Eve but she too was excellent.

An attorney leaves his wife and shows up his former lover's place after no contact for 4 years. 'Nuff said about the plot.

The writing was OK but could have been better.

The camera work was perhaps the most interesting part. They used excellent control of perspective to control and help define the scenes. Depending who controlled the scene the perspective showed that individual to be the bigger person. Eve is 5'5", Tucci is 5'8" but as scenes shifted she would appear to dwarf him when she controlled the scene, as power shifted to him it would reverse, or shift to equal footing. At times it appeared to be done to show Tucci's character's pettiness. Excellent camera work!!!!

With better writing I would have given this a 9.

Something creative out of Hollywood
23 March 2020
We start with the impression of a low budget horror film an d it is uphill from there. It turns out to be anything but a horror film, just a well executed and edited mystery. Don't turn it off, just keep watching as the plot twists an turns and the suspense builds. It keeps you guessing and trying to piece it together all the way to the end. Get out the popcorn, turn down the lights and enjoy.

A fresh idea out of Holloywood
20 November 2019
I've been down on Hollywood lately. In that regard this film was refreshing. This film puts an interesting perspective on LeMans, and how the US got there with the GT40. I grew up in the 60's. I was 15 when this race occurred. Carroll Shelby was a God and the GT40 a dream. It was a time when things could get done in this country. JFK said we're going to the moon.....we did. Carroll Shelby wanted to eat Corvettes on the track and he did with the Cobra. Henry Ford II wanted to beat Ferrari and with Shelby and Miles and the GT40 he did. Pull out the stops, damn the corporate committees, just a "git 'er done" mentality. It's a fun film that doesn't get lost in the racing. It is a story of friendship, attitude, determination and yes, Le Mans. It is also a fantastic ode to some the greatest icons of Automotive history, Shelby, Miles, Iacocca, Henry Ford II. Go, watch and enjoy,
