Wow, as an action film, it can't get much better than this
17 June 2023
Action movie with tons of...action!

Awesome choreography, stunning visuals and unrelenting pace.

I can watch Chris Hemsworth doing virtually anything all day, so, it was quite a treat.

Now for the sake of fulfilling IMDbs characters quota:

After Jurassic Earth

While sleek and well acted, adds nothing to the genre, and for a movie involving spaceships and dinosaurs. It's amazingly linear, predictable and devoid of tension or emotion. For Adam Driver (die hard) fans only.

I Came By (2022)

Frustrating
8 September 2022
Perhaps I had too high expectations with this one because of the actors involved and because it sounded like the kind of movie I'd like. And it did for a while. It started quite interesting but since the main plot twist is revealed very early into the movie and what it came after that point meandered between teenage angst and domestic drama, I started loosing interest. There's no much in terms of action, or suspense or any thrills of any sort, and *spoilers* the end is not rewarding enough. Or maybe I was not in the right mood...give it a try and comment!

Hello imdb, what's with the 600 characters?

Mary Sue goes to Paris.
27 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Most embarrassingly stupid, cringe-worthy, ludicrous and nausea-inducing movie I've seen in a while.

I don't have much to say about it, but since the site demands more than 600 characters in a review, I'd say that I don't know who could watch this and not be rolling their eyes constantly: a happy-go-lucky cleaning lady with a heart of gold, an unabashed optimistic attitude and an incredible good luck embarks in a ridiculous journey to acquire a Dior dress, and while she is at it, she will fix the lives of everyone around her, and even save Christian Dior from going broke...in a week!

It should be advertised as fantasy, and even then, it would still be too silly and unbelievable.

How this movie got such a high rating is beyond me, but that seems to be the trend in IMDb...

Worst movie in a while...
9 July 2022
And I never use the "worst movie" quote lightly. I was baffled by the horrible acting from every one involved in this terrible film, with the exception of Juan Minujin, hence the 2 stars. Everyone else's acting is atrocious, including Peretti (who has proved himself a good actor many times before) and specially the girl; she was painful to watch. The story is as paint by numbers and linear as you can get. The ominous music and setting (that dreary Buenos Aires, I asume, stormy and gloomy) contrast with the sheer stupidity and simplicity of the plot. Even the wardrobe choices are dreadful (I'm thinking about that scene in which the writer is waiting for the journalist in his mansion, sitting in a couch, whisky in hand and dressed like he is in an Oscar Wilde play, because that's just how every writer dresses at home, hilarious!). And the list of horrors and ludicrousness goes on and on...

Dull and unremarkable.
13 April 2022
I'm sure that everyone involved with this project had very good intentions and that the real events in which the story is inspired must have been way more engaging, but the end result is rather dull and unremarkable.

I feel almost guilty to describe such a well intentioned story like boring and not engaging, but unfortunately that's what I felt while watching it.

I kept waiting for a twist or a reveal that would add tension or emotion to an otherwise rather dull story of survival, but it didn't happened.

The fact that "John" acts like an idiot almost all the time didn't help.

The Good Boss (2021)
5/10
Mediocre, at best.
1 April 2022
Maybe my expectations regarding this movie were too high...the truth is that I was pretty dissapointed with it.

It is, by no means, an award deserving movie, yet it won a few, including the Spanish Goya.

The story is predictable and full of cliches, and it would have been relevant maybe 30 years ago, but in 2022 feels dated and out of touch with the current problems in the work world.

Abuse of power, infidelity, crooked bosses, loving unsuspecting wife... the story meanders among many subjects (none specially engaging or interesting enough) without finding its tone.

Most of what happens onscreen feel forced and sometimes, outright ludicrous (Bardem, specially with his aging makeup, is way past his hearthrob years, which makes his affaire with a much younger, and pretty, girl quite improbable); while some subplots add nothing to the whole (Miralles' wife infidelity).

Bardem is never bad, but lately his performances are quite the same and unremarkable, and this one is no exception.

I dare say he is even outshined by some of his fellows (Celso Bugallo as Fortuna, gives a restrained and superb performance as the faithfull employee, as well as Oscar de la Fuente).

All in all, a mediocre movie, repetitive, outdated, and the worst of all, a little boring.

Nice and fresh, Sbaraglia in a new register.
27 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A little movie with a solid premise, which, admittely, could have used some reworking, but still has its enjoyable moments, albeit some very awkward ones (the fight with the clowns?).

Its comedic bits are here and there and clearly land better when the actors are left to work free from the constraints of the script.

What I liked the best is that the movie refrains from visiting some obvious places and avoids some (but not all) cliches: i.e. When we finally meet Benito's biological father, he is not (despite being played by 90's hearthrob Gabriel Corrado) a womanizer or a jerk, he is just a normal guy, with a family of his own, probably completely unaware of the fact that he had a son with Silvina.

Likewise, Silvina is not a victim of abandonment or domestic violence, but a normal woman who made her choices and assumed the consequences, "el Griego" is an absentminded guy completely absorbed by his declaining career as a tv producer, but not a complete jerk; they are normal people with normal people problems.

It was nice to see some of the heavywheights of Argentinian cinema or TV (Silveyra, Gioia, Peretti, Luque, etc.), even if some of their roles are little more than cameos.

Oreiro and Sbaraglia are good, while is the latter the one that elevates the material to something quite better than it really is.

The kid is cute but not engaging enough, the movie would have benefitted from a better actor in the role of Benito.

All in all, quite watchable, with some genuinely entertaining moments.

Terrible
13 March 2022
For a movie that features some big heavyweights from the Argentinian acting scene, this movie feels incredibly amateurish.

The narrative is disjointed and jumbled, and the movie is edited with no sense of cointinuity, the story (nothing new or surprising to begin with) feels like a succession of unrelated scenes.

There are plenty of random oniric-like sequences peppered with fx that look like something from a 60's B horror movie, but not in a good way.

Furthermore, there's little to no explanation for anything that the protagonists do, they just wander from one scene to the next doing things because the script demands it (minor spoiler: ten minutes into the movie and just after a quick exchange between them, the doctor decides to take his patient to... a psychic? Why was he so eager to help her, in the first place?. De-rigueur hypnotism session ensues and we have a glimpse into what the big reveal is going to be, and boy, is so cliche and trite, and done with the subtlety and technical prowess of an elementary school play).

Acting, maybe with the exception of Gerardo Romano and the two cameo-length appearances by Arturo Bonín and Rodolfo Ranni, is mediocre.

It could have been a little scary B horror movie with a 60's feel to it, but it ended up being almost like a satire.

Pure garbage
25 February 2022
From the sheer stupidity of the protagonist, the stupid choices she makes (how far did she run? Why didn't she come back to her house? And so on and on), her obnoxious behaviour and self-entitled attitude, everything in this movie is pure garbage.

Chastain's best performance ever...
7 November 2021
Chastain and Garfield are both amazing, but it is Chastain that steals the show. Kudos for the make-up department too. The movie is a little uneven, but it picks it's pace by the third act, altough for someone like me, that knew nothing about the story, it lacked suspense, as the ending was spoiled at the beguinning of the movie. I would have given it a 6, but the outstanding performances made the difference.

...you know what to expect...in fact, my three stars are only because of her and Emile Hirsch. I suffered with his effort to give this mess some semblance of a movie. They seemed to be the only ones not sleepwalking on their way to the bank to cash their checks.

Loki (2021–2023)

Good? Yes...Brilliant? Don't think so.
3 August 2021
1 - I can't care less for the MCU or the Phase 4 or whatever...I only care for the quality of what I watch and how it serves to the purpose of my own entertainment, not that of the studios goals.

2 - I haven't read the comics, so my opinion is based solely on the show (and/or the movies):

I liked it because I love Tom Hiddleston, and Tom Hiddleston was born to play Loki.

I liked it because Owen Wilson is in it.

I liked it because of its retro vintage feel.

I liked the cheekiness, the irony, the funny moments.

I didn't like that Loki turned into a choir boy in Episode 1 (or did he?).

I didn't like that the pace dragged sometimes and too much dialogue seemed to be used exclusively as padding.

I didn't like the "villain". It wasn't shocking or exciting enough.

I wasn't all that thrilled by the rushed (self) love turn.

But I guess we'll see where all this is going...

Jungle Cruise (2021)
6/10
Disney's ol' 80's blockbuster + CGI galore
3 August 2021
Have I surrendered to the standards that rule the film industry this days?

Or is it maybe that I like Dwayne Johnson and I find Emily Blunt slightly more tolerable than the rest of the new generation of actresses?

The truth is that I actually enjoyed this movie (not necessarily the CGI galore: CGI sets, CGI river, CGI jaguar, etc.), it gave me the thrill of a 80's blockbuster and, for me, that alone made it worth to watch.

Then, most 80's blockbusters, as loved and iconic as they are, are also very silly, corny and cheesy, and Jungle Cruise shares those traits, and some more specific to the present times (pandering to minorities, studio's agenda, etc.).

But again, for me it felt like a vehicule to revive all those ol' good movies of yesteryear, with all their flaws, their corniness and implausible plots included, but filmed with all the technical wizardry of today.

I could have done without the convoluted bit about the Spanish Conquistadors, and the respective Spanish actors that played them (whom I mostly like in Spanish productions).

That plot is underwhelming and looks quite murky. I get it, Collet-Serra nodding to his homeland is understandable, but it does not add to the film.

On the acting side, The Rock and Emily Blunt are correct in their respective roles and share good chemistry and it's that chemistry what mostly drives the film.

So, if you are an 80's kid and can let yourself get engulfed in nostalgia, you might enjoy this.

If, instead, you're looking for something innovative or groundbreaking, then this is not your movie.

Note: Like some other fellow imdber stated before, it irked me so much that nobody seemed to care to learn how to pronounce "lágrimas"! Seriously folks, is not that difficult.

Insufferable
17 July 2021
I can watch Ryan Reynolds doing pretty much anything, but this movie is too much. Salma Hayek is horrendous in what must be the most annoying and obnoxious character ever! She delivers every single line yelling in high pitch and using the most unnecessary vulgar languaje ever, and that's coming from a huge fan of Deadpool, in case you think I'm being squeamish. Samuel LJ has never been less funny. But even though, the movie becomes more watchable whenever Salma Hayek is off-screen.

I am surprised with some of the names involved in this mess.

I give it a 5 because they certainly made good use of the stunning locations.

Ryan Reynolds grabbing a bottle of Aviation Gin, his own brand, brings product placement to a new level.

Dissapointed
16 July 2021
All the elements are there, the plot, the acting, the set, the atmosphere... But the pace is uneven, it lags at times and then suddenly, many years pass or important things happen in a second and, mostly, out of the view.

The time passes and I keep waiting for the mistery to unravel or the conflict to arise, but they never do, and since all the cards are laid on the table from the get go, there's no big reveal or twist at the end to reward the audience's patience .

It has some silly, but distracting, errors, such as people looking exactly the same way they looked fifteen years ago, or the supermarket cashier and the police officer that look the same as they did a decade ago, and are expecting their first child, like it had been 3 years since the events, not 15!

Furthermore, almost everyone made some quite questionable decisions, that are never fully explained.

Love French cinema, especially the noir thrillers, so I thought this movie would be right up my alley, but I was dissapointed.

Good acting in a not so good movie
16 July 2021
Such talented actors, somewhat wasted in a meandering story overly loaded with clichés and melodrama. There's a compelling story somewhere underneath all the quirkiness and over-dramatic options, but it never fully surfaces. It feels too staged, even like a play, and I never fully believed that I was seeing real people other than such talented actors. The performance is still worth watching, especially that of the Three Christs, they are all brilliant in their uncharacteristic roles.

Frustrating
16 July 2021
That's the best word I can think of to describe this movie...I was so excited to see Johnny Lee Miller in a movie again! But my excitement was short lived (as it was - minor spoiler- his presence in the flick).

The story built up slowly and its tension kept me interested for a while, but after watching too much sulking, and crying and characters doing unreasonable things, by the third act, I lost what little interest I had left.

It didn't help that the girl was annoying as hell and behaved like a little brat and the mother did not seem to know how to deal with her.

By the end it turned from sci-fi to unwarranted melodrama with an unsatisfactory ending, so, why bother?

Good work by Sofía Boutella, though.

Black Widow (2021)
6/10
SJ's rear end stars in lackluster MCU movie
15 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Admittedly, I haven't read the comics. But a few days ago I rewatched all the MCU films in chronological order, so I have them fairly fresh in my memory. All of them have their ups and downs, but for me the key is their entertainment factor, combining the superhero lore with some deep emotional moments and also some good comedic bits. On that base, my favourite installments are Guardians of The Galaxy, Thor Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

That being said, I can't see the appeal that many people see in Black Widow. I guess it's a matter of personal expectations and I guess I was expecting something darker, stronger, more tormented, that would get into the skin of the character, which, admittely, is not one of my favourites of the MCU. Not having read the comics that inspired them, and judging solely from the movies, BW is quite limited to be the pretty, sexy, if cold, female presence. She has no super powers that we are aware of, other than her undeniable beauty (although sometimes she seems to have a disproportionate strength for her size) and an amazing capacity to calm the Hulk. A lot of cartwheeling and pouting, but little else. I wonder how popular the character would be, if it wasn't portrayed by the amazing Scarlett Johansson.

If, like me, you want to know more about Nat's life before the Avengers, you won't find much in this film. We get to know little about her past, through glimpses about her indoctrination as a Russian ¿spy?, Red Sparrow style, which is mostly told and not showed. The movie focuses more in the dynamics of her stranged and bizarre family, but this is also showed passingly. We don't get to see how she grew up or how she turned up to be so skilled and lethal.

I was also expecting to know more about her relationship with Hawkeye and what transpired in Budapest, but I guess we will never know.

And then there is Florence Pugh, an overrated actress, if you ask me. She is not, by no means, a bad actress, but she is certainly no Meryl Streep. I don't understand all the praise she is getting.

Her character in BW has the spotlight because that's Disney's marketing choice, but it is underdeveloped. We don't know anything about her or her motivations, other than "I want to save the rest of the BW". For someone who has spend almost all of her life under a rigorous and cruel training and indoctrination, she seems quite childish and immature. And of course, there's no hint of the seductive skills attributed to a female Russian spy, because, you know, this is Disney.

Scarlett, by the way, seems to be bored and tired of her character and there are some scenes when she seems to be on autopilot. It is barely noticeable, though, since she is such a great actress, altough this kind of films are clearly not the vehicle to highlight her acting chops.

As for action lovers, there are a couple of motorcycle chases and some fights, but don't expect to be surprised or amazed by any of them. There are some implausible scenes that require an absolute suspension of disbelief and that, frankly, look quite ridiculous.

In short, I wasn't moved or shocked, there are no strong emotional moments or powerful scenes to remember, no shocking revelations or game-changing discoveries regarding the character. I still feel like BW owes her fan love and adoration only to Scarlett Johansson and this film has done nothing to change that perception.

Special mention for the debatable casting choices (in spoiler)

Spoiler

The villain, really? Don't get me wrong, Ray Winstone is a wonderful actor, but his days of inspiring fear are gone. You will expect someone who elicits a sense of inminent danger and evil or, at least, someone with surprise/ novelty value, as the previous MCU films had (Mads Mikkelsen, Josh Brolin, Tom Hiddleston, Andy Serkis, Jake Gyllenhaal , Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, to name a few).

David Harbour as comic relief becomes annoying after 5 minutes and Rachel Weisz looks sleep deprived. The Russian accents are caricature level.

And I don't even want to start with Taskmaster, but I'll just say that Olga Kurylenko has finally found a role that suits her acting skills.

In another note, what's with all the shots of SJ's rear end, for no apparent purpose? I get it, she's hot, but it feels like a poor stylistic resource. Thank God BW is directed by a woman ...

I give it a 5 because it's not bad in the technical aspects, though nothing remarkable (it looks like it was shot in what was left of the "Midsommar" set), and the acting is decent, but it does not add anything remotely new to the genre. If for "classic" they meant "cliche", then the title is accurate, because anyone with a functioning brain cell will guess almost every turn and twist from the get go. It's an Italian movie, and that's kind of different, but that's all the originality you'll get.

Best of 2021 so far
15 June 2021
I'm obsessed with this movie! Not only because it features two of my favourite actors on Planet Earth, Mads Mikkelsen and Rolland Moller, but because it kept surprising me from beginning to end. It's hard to label this movie since it is obvioulsy a drama, but it also offers great bits of raw and laugh-out-loud comedy. In that sense, it remind me a little of "Jojo Rabbit". Such juxtaposition of moods and genres could have been a disaster, if not for the perfect balance achieved by Jensen. But the merit also goes to the fantastic cast: every performance is superb, nuanced, layered, touching in one way or the other. I strongly recommend to watch it, it will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions and will provide an absolutely mesmerizing cinematic experience.

OMG, what have I just watched? I literally hated every single frame of this movie. Disgusting characters doing the most unbeliavable things in the most ridiculous ways, and just when you think that the story can't be more stupid, unrealistic and nonsensical...

... whoever wrote this mess decides to blatantly trump the audience with the most farfetched "twist" ever... that's the real LIE, and one that will equally annoy and offend the audience and should seriously embarrass everyone involved in this monstrosity of a movie.

Those who wish to see me pout
16 May 2021
Ok, admittely, my opinion is biased by the fact that I want to pry my eyes out with a screwdriver every time AJ shows her bony ass or her botox-collagen-filled face and puffy lips, playing a tough firefighter burdened by grief, while looking like she is posing for the cover of a magazine... But honestly, maybe she is the least of the movie's many problems. The plot is all over the place, things happen randomly, characters act irrationally (i.e.: hardened assassins would kill a kid in cold blood but not a pregnant woman). Relationships are suggested but never developed. The fire is thrown into the plot as a second thought and by the most implausible reason ever. And so on... How can you ruin a movie starring John Bernthal, Aiden Gillen and Nicholas Hoult is beyond me...
