Spirited Away (2001)

Good, but very overrated
20 January 2010
this movie was dripping with lush background art and imaginative creatures. However, the story is difficult to fallow, goes off on uncalled for directions and such. But the thing I was the least impressed, with was the character animation. For a movie that is rated the #2 greatest animated movie I expected it to have lush and fluid animation, sure some of the creatures and liquid elements were well animated, but the characters ended up looking flat and choppy moments. When it boils down to it, it was just another anime film. Nothing new really. The day I see anime animation with smooth shading as a posed to that awful over-used sharp shading, is the day they gain my respect. Until that time, I will look to American and others for the great animation in an animated movie.

How is this so unknown?!

This movie is amazing! Animation is perfect! You cant get enough of high quality traditional animation these days (low quality would be like Marvel animations, nick animation, most Disney sequels). The plot is awesome. And the concept is very original! It kind of has that dark and Gothic Burtonesque feel and style to it. The background art is very awesomely surreal in a non to weird of a way. Crooked alleyways, twisted buildings, curling street poles, and a beautifully colorful moonlit sky. Wish is more well know, perhaps Disney could release it in the states. Gah! For such an amazing movie there isn't really much about it on IMDb no pics or posters or anything. I makes me very sad because its just an amazing movie. T

On the best underrated Disney films
17 November 2009
How is did it flop? Because, people cant get past that dumb old unoriginal happy-singy crap fest you get with most animated movie. Because this movie was nothing like that. No songs, darker themes, amazing animation and action that leaves you wanting more. Possibly the fourth best Disney movie of the Renaissance of the late 80s-90s. (The other three would be, 3rd Aladdin, 2nd Beauty and the Beast, 1st Lion King) And personally one of my favorite movies. Its an original story that takes place in a peculiar and rarely used place, Australia. With peril and and danger around every corner, its an action flick about a young boy who was kidnapped by a mad hunter and is rescued by three little mice who work for a secret society of child-saving mice. Like, honestly anyone who finds this movie "dumb!" "Stoopid" "Crappy kids carTOOn movie" needs to watch it again and really analyze how great it is.

A Fantastic Animated movie
17 November 2009
This is one of Disney's last great hand-drawn animated movies and boy does it not disappoint. Sure it failed terribly in the box office. But so did movies like Shawshank Redemption. That just means people didn't know what there were missing. The Good: In this take on Treasure Island, instead of adventures on the sea the story takes to the sky. High in the sky and to the outer reached of a distant galaxy full wonderful scenery and imagination. Never before have I seen such fluidity and dimension in character animation. The shading, the perspective, the movement. Everything is nearly flawless in a refreshing combination of sci-fi/retro futurism and fantasy. The Not so Good: Well to me this is actually a +, but this Disney flick had no musical number like its previous ones. The reason it is a - in the long run, is that it kinda looses its magic that the lush and wonderful flicks from the 90s had. The bad: As beautifully animated as the characters may be, 80% of the background were not. At times it looked to much like a video game. The technique is called Deep canvas in which is meant to make CG look like painted background, but instead made it kinda less painted looking. All in all This movie is a great flick to watch if your in the mood for the art of animation at its best.
