Warning: Spoilers
I didn't know what to expect as most sequels are usually a bad commercial mockery but watching Maverick and Iceman again after all these years, not pretending to be any younger and assuming a consistent timeline since their previous adventures was just a great delight. This new episode introduces the older still hot head Maverick and introduces a new generation of young and ambitious hotshots as they get trained every year at Top Gun. This is very different from the first Top Gun as we now fly with them in the cockpit, it makes it a whole different feeling. I love the movie! We find the same mix of That's the rules Vs Who dares wins...

No expectation, still love it!
24 December 2023
I really like how this story is built, how the quirky characters are introduced, start to mingle together and learn to accept their differences, how cultural backgrounds clash (but this is a recurrent cinema theme) and how deep friendship slowly grows between the protagonists. So yes, I was pulled by friends to watch it didn't regret it. Very human, very funny... to watch!

A few scenes really made me laugh... may be seen as bad taste humour (trying not to spoil the movie) but still, it's light, it's stupid and it's really enjoyable. Don't watch it alone if you can, enjoy it with friends to share the fun!

Wow, love it!
18 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As an early fan of the manga (end of 90's), I was looking forward with curiosity (and a bit of worry) to this live-action release. TBH, I'm really happy with tis first season. Of course having the author (Oda) supervising probably helped a lot. The casting is amazing! I was a bit worried with some people complaining about Usopp being subpar but he's OK: filthy liar, braggard and coward as he was supposed to be. I just don't get why they gave him a greek nose instead of his Pinocchio one. Well, less work for the props I guess. Zef, Buggy, Mihawk, Shanks, Kaya... even Helmeppo are all amazing. I don't know why Nojiko suddenly turned black but... OK, the actress is up to the role. Buchi and Sham (Klahadore's cronies) were absurd in the manga and the anime and I love how they kept the same spirit here! Love this, waiting for more...

Wow, I really liked that!

In a way, it's a depiction of a child overcoming severe neuropsychological issues to grow up and build his own life. The film is buit in a very intelligent way and I found each character's background and trauma amazing pieces slowly rebuilding the whole puzzle. The action sequences are very convincing, both fist and gunfights. And the final twist was slowly built in with many intricacies. You can feel the interest from the main character's inner world through all the cues left and spread throughout the whole movie. It was a really interesting movie, a very curious and fascinating crossover between A Beautiful Mind and Jason Bourne trilogy. I'll watch it again most probably.

Beautiful, human story, reflection of human complexity
29 November 2020
This film about a deeply wounded genius soul is by itself a therapy. To be honest, the first Gus Van Sant directed movie I saw was Even Cowgirls Get the Blues and I didn't get it at all. And looking at its rating, few did. But this one got my heart. Clever, deep, way deeper than it appears at first...

ROFLMAO
13 October 2020
I was dragged to watch this movie! Majority rule, my friends wanted to watch this so I had to follow and was expecting the worst of stupid French comedy. Little did I know that I was going to laugh so much and so loud barely a few minutes after it started! This movie is a comedic pearl! Watch it if you haven't...

Beautiful, funny, sexy... just loved it
28 July 2017
I've read all the comics when I was a kid so I was a bit anxious to see how Besson turned it into a movie, to see how he would render the characters, the universe, the crazy visuals. I was not disappointed. The pictures are a pure visual delight! The costumes, the landscapes, the lights, the colors... just wow the whole movie! I was amazed with the characters, very close to their comics counterpart. So yes, I loved that movie and I'll probably go to watch it again!

Perfect family movie!
10 March 2017
I had the opportunity to watch it at the Anima Festival (Brussels) before it gets released in the theaters in my country. Very nice surprise!

The main character is a bit stubborn like children can be, while the supportive characters are mostly crazy, fun, kind and emotional, which makes an interesting cocktail.

As the film is centered on birds, it's kind of a (sky)road movie with enriching encounters, discoveries about yourself for the main character and interesting places.

Some very funny scenes for both kids and adults, it's been a pleasure! Go and watch it... and bring your kids / godchildren / little cousins, etc.!

Beautiful and touching!
10 March 2017
I really liked the story. It's both inspiring and beautiful. It makes you realize how challenging it can be for deaf people to cope with society everyday life.

The cast is excellent. The voice of the girl is really stunning, so pure, you just stop breathing to focus on that voice. The parents are a bit annoying in their stubbornness but I suppose it's how their role was written.

This film reminded me about another (excellent) french movie: 'Intouchables (2011)', also about handicap Vs society. It was also funny and touching.

Great & fun!
27 June 2015
After the disappointment of the 2012 Astérix & Obélix: Au service de sa Majesté and the lame 2008 Astérix aux jeux olympiques, finally a fun and entertaining Asterix movie at the level of 2002 Mission Cleopatre!

I really liked the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) humour, similar and so faithful to the comics albums. Yes, Asterix and Obelix are back to their genuine roots!

One album at the time, one story at the time. There is enough content (adventures, characters, plots) in an Asterix comics album to feed an entire movie, thank you for understanding that.

Also the "secondary" characters were attaching (like some Roman family, some labour slaves, some Roman legionnaires, etc.), making them a strong addition to the movie and the quality of the story.

Disappointed
27 June 2015
They've got an amazing cast: Deneuve, Lucchini, Rochefort, Depardieu, Galienne... all famous excellent actors. So where is the weakness but in the script and dialogs? I hate it when you spoil good materials.

OK, it's difficult to be compared to the most excellent Asterix and Cleopatre! And at the same time it's difficult to compare: Chabat also included scenes totally unrelated to the comic (like the kung-fu fight between the two architects), but at least it was funny!

But this one was (to be honest)... boring. I quit in the middle, when Asterix started hitting heavily on women. French humour? Lame. I expect much more from Asterix : Le domaine des Dieux!

Populaire (2012)
8/10
A very fresh and enjoyable romantic comedy !
22 August 2013
Populaire is the shiny pearl type of movie. Simple enough to be worn regularly and noticeable enough to be more than a touch of color. The typical 50's pastel and soft colors are everywhere in the movie, except when the tone of the story turns less glamour and kitsch to become more intimate. Then the colors turn brighter, sharper and more intense... following the scene moods.

I had no idea about what kind of movie my friends dragged me to but I have to recognize this was a very pleasant surprise. The lead actors (Deborah François and Romain Duris) are carrying the whole movie and it turned way more thrilling that I could expect at first from a type machine competition movie.

There is some sense of Pygmalion and My Fair Lady where love is in the air even though it wasn't the initial purpose. When a young, pretty and innocent girl is coached by her boss, she turns into an accomplished and genuine beautiful Lady.

If you're planning a nice movie sessionflick with your soulmate, without complicated plot or senseless violence and you want to ensure you'll finish smiling at the end, go for Populaire, worths it !!!

WTF is that for a movie!?
10 August 2012
I saw the movie years ago in a small theater in Brussels. Small theater, small crowd, quite comfy to appreciate an independent movie.

That movie made a very strong impression on me as I left the place wondering if I had turned completely stupid or if the movie didn't make any sense at all !? Honest, I do appreciate (some) art films for their different view on the world's craziness. But this movie is pure spit in the audience's face.

The cast is amazing but the way these poor fellows were directed into this joke is pure bad. I don't know maybe the director was under very strong influence when directing and editing? Which would explain why it makes no sense...

I admit I didn't read the book and maybe I should have. But we're talking about the movie here and clearly I couldn't find anything good or appealing in it. It's a shame Uma Thurman started her acting career with that. I'm just glad it didn't stick to her later on... same for Keanu Reeves!

Impressive effects, empty story
4 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Good Lord, what happened to the cool Hellboy? Here he turned into a lazy moron, rude and pathetic, more fitting of a Farrelly Bros movie. I had plenty of expectations from the director of Pan's Labyrinth, what a disappointment! OK, the visual universe is amazing, the CGI effects are flawless but that movie is awfully empty. All the characters are stereotyped without any depth, the evil is what... a kung fu elven master of the spear? The few real characters are the two women (Liz, the Flame Lady and the Elven Princess Nuala)... Come on, we're talking about a demon on earth, a scourge of humanity and now you send him to fight elves, goblins, fairies and trolls??? I don't understand the high rating (7.3)!?? But well... Each person will have his own point of view! Mine: plain lame!

Pure chance
7 January 2011
This is not a special effect movie nor is it a blockbuster movie or a big stars cast movie. No sex, no violence, barely any action. So why do I rate it 9 you can ask?

This movie takes you through an adventure in time and history and poses an intellectual challenge that may push you to question your very own convictions. I don't think it's intended to any public... you need a brain, an open mind, a few cultural and historical background too. And you need to follow the flow of thoughts between the different characters and their motivations to dig further in the intrigue. I've been moved and impressed... thanks for making this movie!

I'm not sure it can be categorized as "science-fiction" but it is indeed very uncommon! Loved it, will watch it again...

Right now I have to go looking for the DVD!

Gattaca (1997)

Reflection on science not-fiction anymore...
13 January 2009
2009, Jan 13. It's been eleven years since Gattaca was released. Today, selecting your most valid embryo to get it implanted in a woman's womb is Scientific News reality, so this SF movie from 1997 turned amazingly visionary! Gattaca really is Science-Fiction in the sense that it took the existing science promises at the time and projected them in the future, trying to imagine the impact it could have on people's everyday life... Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman are amazing at expressing their fear of being rejected by society for not being perfect (not everybody can be Leelo Dallas Multipass ;-) What is the supreme bing? Who is the real winner in society? Firmly recommended... still today!

top 3 worst movies ever!
22 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
What a disappointment! I had liked the first movie so much for its pseudo-candid approach of war ideology and media manipulation! The second opus is a bad Z-series movie with terrible acting, photography, filming sequences, visual effects and... plot. It looks like a Chuck Norris action movie, everything looks fake! It's really a succession of bad clichés followed bad more bad clichés with a few ideas taken from success horror movies like Alien (the body host), Rosemary's baby (the knife butchering scene), or Rambo (the lone man armed with heavy machine-gun against a multitude)... If you paid for it (and I did... grrr), you got yourself tricked!!!

Amazingly questioning...
25 May 2008
I'm very fond of animation movies, being Disney, Ghibli, Pixar, Dreamworks, Aardman or any other good studio.

I just watched the Triplets of Belleville and my feeling now is WOW! How could I ignore this one for so long?

My problem is: I don't understand exactly why... The characters are ugly and almost disgusting, there is barely any dialog and the two main characters are an old stubborn little woman... and her fat dog! No sexy girl, no stunning special effect (OK a few CGI to animate the sea and a few vehicles), no strong, clever or invincible hero... so what!?

Could be because the movie is so rich... in every sense of the term! The whole idea is so incredibly creative, the music, the atmosphere, the monomaniac characters, the repulsive AND charming triplets...

All that doesn't make sense... But you CAN'T possibly be untouched by that movie!!!

I'll watch it again soon...
