Deadstream (2022)
Funny, Fun, Scary
Deadstream has it all.
A well crafted, well acted, unique horror movie that is both funny and scary. The film is full to the brim with excellent practical effects, something we don't see enough in horror movies (or movies in general) today, something I absolutely adore. It is energetic and fast paced. And so funny. Did I mention that it is funny?
And yet it also manages to be legitimately scary in all the right places.
I was lucky to catch it in the theater, and can't wait for it to hit Shudder so that I can enjoy it again and again. I absolutely foresee this one becoming a Halloween tradition.
They Live Inside Us (2020)
Both Classic and Unique Horror
This film understands the genre and filmmakers that inspired its creation, and it honors those inspirations while simultaneously doing new and creative things with them.
I found the film engrossing, spooky, entertaining, fun, and thoughtful.
The house in which the film is set is awesome. The effects are authentic and unique. The story unfolds in interesting ways. The film looks amazing, and it is evident the filmmakers created their story with care and passion.
I'm flabbergasted as to why so many others on IMDb have given this film such a low rating. On Amazon the reviews are much more favorable. Director Adam Robitel, of the Insidious franchise, said this about They Live Inside Us, "An insidious chiller that delivers on the thrills." And Dave Parker, a director on Tales of Halloween, said, "It gets under your skin, instilling a sense of fear and dread."
I'm with them. I'm so happy to have seen this film, and recommend it highly.
Captain Marvel (2019)
One of Marvel's Best
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. At a time when Marvel's origin story films have, to me, started to feel a bit redundant, Captain Marvel was different, original, fresh. Having Samuel L. Jackson as one of the main characters was truly a delight. Brie Larson is wonderful and engaging in her performance. She's never over the top. She's grounded and real, and very relatable because of that - a character I could connect with. On top of that, the movie never hits you over the head with its mid-nineties references, but still fully brings to life that time period, and the nostalgia feels it evokes are wonderful. I found myself laughing a lot, thinking back to the decade in which I lived a number of my teenage years, with its video rental stores, pagers, and dial-up Internet.
I personally think this is one of Marvel's finer films, and certainly one of its very best origin stories.
The Public (2018)
Excellent
Saw it at a pre-screening in SLC, UT. This movie is funny, thoughtful, very well acted, and moving. It is awesome to see an entertaining movie about a really important subject manner.
This film is highly watchable, very enjoyable, and it makes you think. Give it a watch.
The Kid Who Would Be King (2019)
For the Kid in us All
I can't get enough of this film. I saw it twice this weekend, and it was even better the second time.
It is so refreshing to see a kids movie of this quality and caliber. The trailer doesn't even come close to doing the movie justice. The writing is top notch, the story excellent, the acting is great - the kids they got for this film are awesome.
See it. I'm serious. You'll love it. Don't have kids? It is great for all ages. Both times I went this weekend, I went with adults. We loved it.
In every kid is a wise old person, in ever old person there's a child. That's one of the film's many rich themes, and it proves true. I felt like a kid again watching it; and I think kids that watch it feel empowered. The movie is smart, and it treats children with respect.
Such. Good. Stuff.
Glass (2019)
Subverts the Superhero Genre We're so Used to in Wonderful Ways
Don't trust the critical reviews. This movie is well crafted and meaningful. It takes the now very overdone and tired superhero genre, and does different things with it - which is such a breath of fresh air. I loved this film.
See it.
Little Women (2018)
Touching, Well Made, and Wonderful
Making films is HARD. This is Clare Niederpruem's directorial debut - the first film she's ever directed - and you'd never guess. This movie is extremely capably crafted, and holds its own quite easily with any of the other films currently in the movie theaters right now. Every aspect of the film was great - the acting, the cinematography, the production design, the sound, the editing - and most importantly, the storytelling.
I enjoyed every bit of this film. I was quite moved multiple times, and left the theater very affected.
Split (2016)
M. Night in Top Form!
I was lucky to win tickets to a prescreening of this film.
I loved it.
I won't write at all about the plot. I think the less you know about this film going in, the more enjoyable your experience with it will be. In fact, I would avoid reading any articles about it until you've seen it. Just know, this movie is worth your time.
The story is engaging. The performances, from all the actors, are so good. Often times you can see, feel, what they are thinking, even when they don't say a word. James McAvoy is tremendous, simply tremendous, in this film.
The story is engaging and interesting. The movie's themes are compelling and thoughtful. M. Night's direction is spot on, careful, and well crafted.
I read this quote from M. Night Shyamalan the other day regarding achieving success at such a young age, and how, over the years since then, he's developed as a filmmaker and person. He turned 29 the day The Sixth Sense opened in 1999. "It was weird, but I got to do the cycle of fame early: 'I'm great, I'm an idiot, I'm a success, I'm a failure...I got to experience all that and then say, 'Let's just concentrate on making movies.'" I appreciate M. Night's attitude. I appreciate how he's grown.
And, Split is a great movie. Give it a watch.
