His House (2020)
Best Horror in a long time.
This movie has everything. You'll get goosebumps, you'll jump, you'll cry and you'll come away thinking about it for days if not weeks.
It tells a deep story about refugees coming to the UK and leaves the viewer to decide if what they are experiencing is real, or whether they are merely suffering mentally from survivor's guilt.
It's a truly incredible spectacle.
Anyone giving it bad reviews doesn't understand film full stop. They don't get much better than this.
What a fantastic debut. Looking forward to many more.
The Box (2009)
A deep film with a powerful message!
I wish I could be surprised at the rating of this film being so low but it sums up the state of humanity just as this film does. TOO MANY MORONS OBVIOUSLY DO NOT THINK WHEN WATCHING A FILM!
This was one of the best films I have seen in a long time.
The parallels it draws with human nature, capitalism, war, the way we treat one another and also the impeding Alien interference is unbelievably incredible and anyone who thinks this film is actually anything less than a 7 is deluded and would probably push the button.
As you probably know, the plot revolves around a box with a button that kills someone if pressed, and in return, whoever presses it gets a million dollars. The box is passed on daily to new strangers and the pattern continues. While that could have gone any direction, it was used as a metaphor for our greed and tendency to put ourselves first over someone else's misery or in this case total demise.
Humanity is in a current state of exactly this. We destroy the planet in the name of money and instant profit, we go to war killing people we don't know in the name of freedom, which anyone with their head screwed on knows is a complete lie and is actually just a facade for a bunch of people's greed. If we continue doing this to ourselves and the planet, we will have nothing left. In my opinion, that is EXACTLY the message this film was portraying and it did it spectacularly.
Maybe I only saw the message because I wouldn't have pushed the button and am a firm believer in being the change you wish for. This film stood to point out the flaws in humanity. Many of my friends said they would have pushed the button. I'm quite disappointed in them, but I can see why. Nobody thinks there will be a consequence, even though you're killing someone. It's quite heartbreaking but until you tell them in plain black and white what the consequence will be, they are blinded by their greed.
If (and I think there is quite a lot of evidence for it) Aliens are watching us, they would no doubt be wondering what the heck we are doing as a race and how we could be so unevolved. We stand no chance of survival as a race unless we stop thinking about our own fortunes and start pulling together collectively. That means not killing people, not going to war, not destroying the planet/ raping its resources for capital and actually uniting as people regardless if we know each other or not.
This film contained this message and I am disappointed it obviously hasn't touched a majority of people here.
One of my friends who said he would push the button was in the process of signing up to the Armed forces. He has since changed his mind, siting a combination of this film and my added analysis as the reason. I wish it will continue to spread such a positive message and making a difference in this messy world we live in.
If you didn't enjoy this film, then fair enough, that's your issue, but I hope the message was at least clear to you.. How people have rated this so low is shocking!
In my opinion this film is pure genius.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)
Very good through most of it, but novelty wears thin through second half!
I enjoyed this film but do think it was rather long winded. It was pretty cheesy in places and almost too well done if you know what i mean.
As you would expect the acting was flawless.
The special effects were incredible.
The idea is genius.
The story is a bit too long and kind of predictable, not that there's much to predict.
I think the message could have been expressed within 2 hours and being longer kind of ruined the film for me, however being the whole story of someones life, you can't complain too much.
Put the effects and idea aside and you don't have too much of a spectacular film, I wouldn't want to see this one winning too many awards. I have seen some much more interesting and better films in the last month and wouldn't put this one up there.
As Benjamin gets younger the story gets less interesting and the novelty wears off, you can see where the story is going and I personally felt a bit annoyed knowing I would have to watch another hour of it. I wasn't exactly going to stop before the end, mainly because I wanted to see how they would make Brad Pitt look like a teenager but the message had been made and the story had pretty much been told.
All round, this is a watchable film and definitely worth going to see, but certainly not one of the better ones this winter, and most definitely not worth being in the top 250 on here (as it currently is)
I'd rate it a 7.5
Milk (2008)
Phenomenal, a must see for all!!!
I watched this film last night and it had me in tears. If you don't know the story of Harvey Milk, then you really should. I had never heard of him until this film and I don't know why I hadn't. I'm not gay and feel quite uncomfortable watching other guys kissing, but have nothing against homosexuality. I didn't feel uncomfortable at all throughout this film and it really left me feeling very sympathetic for the gay community, and anyone who is persecuted for being different. Sean Penn delivers the most outstanding performance i have seen him deliver in ages, it should definitely warrant an Oscar! James Franco, Josh Brolin, Emile Hirch and Diego Luna also showing their brilliance. All the actors were incredible and to think that none of them (that i know of) are actually gay. It must take some serious ability to pull that one off so believably. Maybe I just don't have a gaydar and can't see it, so could someone who is gay let me know what he thought of their performance. Anyway, there is a lot to learn from this film, it shocks me to think this happened only a generation ago and we were all such an unaccepting bunch of idiots back then. However, it tells the entire story from an unbiased view. All the homophobes and 'bad guys' aren't just displayed as bad people, but always come across as being human, albeit ignorant, you can't blame someone for their ignorance. Gus Van Sant's direction as usual was fantastic, some very innovative and clever shots, and by using an old school camera through many parts of the film, could blend real historical footage and modern film seamlessly. One of the best films I have seen all year! I hope it does well and wins multiple awards, it definitely deserves it! Enjoy this film, it has really touched me.
Transsiberian (2008)
Incredible!!!! A classic that keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way through!
Wow.. This film blew me away and had me hooked with an uneasy feeling in my stomach from the very first moment. I have now chewed my nails to shreds watching it. BRILLIANT FILM... The acting was superb on all fronts. Kingsly really did a good job playing the Russian. Woody was perfect for the overly friendly American role and what can be said about Emily Mortimer? Seriously, that girl has an amazing skill. She played every part of her role perfectly and deserves awards for it, they would be mad not to give her an Oscar! Noriega plays a dark character as usual and you know something isn't right about him from the moment he enters the frame. Again, great acting. The script was perfect in every way and really well written. I'm shocked as to why it doesn't have a higher rating, anyone who rates this lower than an 8 must be delusional.. a definite 9 and a half for me, o what the hell, I'm going to give it the perfect 10 as I can't think of anything I didn't like about it. YOU WILL ENJOY THIS MOVIE!
The Life Before Her Eyes (2007)
The Worst Film Ever!!!
This was probably the worst film I have seen all year... I watch movies most days of the week and it is not an understatement. And I see the beauty in most films... so much so that even my girlfriend thinks some of the films I enjoy are dreadful. I love Uma Thurman and have no idea why she would do a film this bad... I watched this film due to the reviews I had seen on this site which were blinding. I can't believe there are so many idiotic reviewers on here and no matter how hard I try, i find it impossible to see what they could have got from this film. absolute drivel. Read the book I'm sure it's probably good but this film is not worth the time. I'd prefer to watch daytime cable television... through a shop window!
