Smiling Friends (2020)
This show is a work of great art
If you are a millennial or Gen Z who grew up using the internet in its infancy, or watched Adult Swim cartoons as a preteen/teen- this is undoubtedly the show for you. Smiling Friends will and should disturb people, it's gratuitously hyperactive, violent, and bizarre... But it encapsulates the lives of a lot of us, which are confusing and traumatic. This show manages to balance absurdity and chaos, and while Smiling Friends is a dark show, it is peppered with enough heartfelt, optimistic and whimsical content to keep itself from being truly depressing. I especially like the not so subtle critique of contemporary capitalist society, the very fact that it's a show about people being paid to go out and make other people happy is your first hint at the show's tone. The fact that the boss making the protagonists do this work has morally ambiguous motivations- is also pretty noteworthy.
All in all, if you can relate to the show I think you'll find it validating and amusing. If you can't? Let the people who do enjoy it, and go watch something a little easier to digest.
Grittiness is a slippery slope in terms of tone, and this show manages itself really well in terms of not being hurtful to viewers. The writing itself never feels mean spirited, even if it is nihilistic. My favorite thing about Smiling Friends is its tact, there's very little "edginess for the sake of edginess" to be found as it explores serious themes, and I love that it tries to be real instead of offensive.
Good Omens (2019)
Best Book Adaptation I've Ever Seen
With only very minor differences in script and occurrences, anything that was changed or added was changed and or added for good reason. It's true that the series might've been somewhat different had Terry also worked on it, but Neil did an amazing job protecting and perfecting his co-author's dying wish. Every scene is finely crafted with love and humor. The core of the story shines brighter than ever, with a wonderful cast and a great soundtrack. More than worth a watch. A wonderful work of art.
Garfielf (2013)
One for the Ages
From the moment I stumbled upon Garfielf via recommended youtube video panel, I knew I had been exposed to an instant classic.
Without spoiling anything for the debutant watcher, there is an enigmatic hamburger helpler mystery involved, one inroduced in such an amazing whodunnit fashion that you can expect your eyes will be as good as glued to the screen.
An ethereal yet ungodly experience and treat for the senses. Parental guidance advised. (Heavy themes like lasagna addiction and domestic violence.)
