Downton Abbey (2010–2015)

Well produced drama harks back to 'golden days' of TV?
1 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Having had my fill of 'detective/mystery/thrillers', I have longed for a 'proper drama'. Here we have a wonderful piece, drawing comparisons with such milestones as 'Upstairs, Downstairs', 'The Onedin Line' and the BBC's 1990's production of 'Pride & Prejudice'. An excellent cast, marvellous sets, costumes, writing and storyline make this a truly marvellous (and rare) television event.

Yes we know the history, yes we've seen a lot of it before and yes we know the 2nd series (and I sincerely hope there is one) will focus on the First World War but that, in part, is what makes it all the more exciting. The threat of the war looms like a menacing shadow, you just know it's there but fear for and sympathise with the characters, wondering how their safe, secure and seemingly everlasting world will cope with the coming onslaught.

All the actors are excellent but special mention must be made of Maggie Smith who is gifted some marvellous lines, delivered as ever, with perfect timing and characterisation.

Downton Abbey is something to look forward to every week and savour as a brilliant piece of television.

A wonderful, hidden gem!
15 May 2008
Can't admit to seeing all of this yet but caught several scenes on Film4 recently, while dashing in and out and having lunch. Brief as the glimpses were, I was captivated by the performances of the cast, especially Vincent Price (looking almost cherubic - light years from the characters that were to become his 'trade-mark') and Harry Morgan. Didn't actually 'know' any of the rest of the cast but the whole production seemed well crafted and not at all preachy or over the top. Wholly agree with other reviewers, not seen enough and just as deserving as many another war film.

Definitely to be added to my "Must see" list!

Pinky and the Brain: The Pink Candidate (1996)

Brain tries to run an election campaign
19 July 2006
In my opinion this series of cartoons (Pinky & The Brain) must rank as one of the most entertaining, mature, satirical and down right funny since the Tom & Jerry's of the immediate post war era! In particular, The Pink Candidate shows many of the facets that make this outstanding series.

It is easy to see why only 37 episodes were made - it is impossible to continually produce such a high quality product. The only possible exception to this might be The Simpsons but even in one or two of their episodes, you get the feeling some of the writing team fell asleep or left the room!

History will look back on Pinky & The Brain as we do now to Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd and Laurel & Hardy and wonder at the talent involved in making us laugh and (more often than not) think! Can't be bad.
