Unexpected greatness because of the songs ...
24 November 2023
I went and saw this on a lark, not really being a fan of the Hunger Games films. But I knew it is a "prequel" and I figured I didn't need to be super familiar with the other films' plots. Correct on that. The big surprise was how music was worked into the plot with the singing of the main character, played by Rachel Zegler (of the newer West Side Story). Her songs, and other incidental songs in the film, are often in a modern bluegrass/roots music style. They sound excellent in the film and really draw you into a story I otherwise would have found predictable for a dystopian/sci-fi aimed at a youth audience. I stuck around for the credits. The on-screen performed music is all performed by the great Dave Cobb. Also additional incidental tracks are by Sierra Ferrell, Olivia Rodrigo, and others. The film music is great and really makes for a cool theatre experience with the images and sound. And it's always great to see Hunter Schafer's star rise further. I'd see it again, just for the music. Really well done! 👍

Much better than I remembered
5 June 2023
I had not seen this since it was in the theaters in 1985. My least favorite of all the Mad Max movies,, it holds up very well. Yes it's different. Yes the other three are a bit better. This is filmed beautifully. It has a very unconventional story-line. It's easy to forget how charming of a screen presence Mel Gibson was in his early days. Lots of fun. Excellent bridge between Road Warrior and Fury Road (quite a few years later). Plus, this has Tina Turner in a great role, not to mention her great songs.

Thumbs up. I give the other three a 10, this one gets a 9.

Also, get the 4K BluRay if watchingbon physical media at home. It's the only copy with an updated film transfer.

Fun movie
5 May 2023
This lady, Tang Wei, takes every film she's in up a few notches just by her being in it. She's got a James Dean-level charisma. Old school Hollywood star vibes.

The movie is well filmed, and I'm guessing on a budget ... but they've done well polishing it.

Edits move the story quickly. Plot is foreign/business international intrigue. The rest of the cast, though sometimes cast unexpectedly, does well picking this up overall. Check this out. It streams on the free apps (Tubi, Plex, etc). I know I already said it, but lots of cool scenery mixed in. Kind of like "RRR". Interesting stuff non-hollywood.

Policewoman Swallow (2004 TV Movie)

Surprisingly good romantic comedy
31 January 2023
First off, you can currently find this film on YouTube. Search TANG WEI full movie and scroll thru choices. Look for Policewoman Yanzi, and a bunch of Chinese characters also in the title. It's English subtitled. A simple rom-com story about a policewoman and a lawyer who start out on the wrong foot multiple times. But you know they'll get together. Creatively filmed on (apparently) video. Charismatic actors. Thumbs up! Apparently also made around 2004. Tang Wei always seems to never age ... here, and in 2007's Lust/Caution, in 2015's Blackhat, and this year's Decision to Leave ... she always appears the same.

The Northman (2022)

This is an excellent, unique film
14 November 2022
There are a good bit of negative reviews for this film, The Northman. I read some of these. Some don't like the story. Some think it's boring. A large number of the negative reviews indicate the film not living up to expectations. But the absence of detail in those reviews tells me that they expected this movie to be more conventional. It's a viking movie with a LOT of attention to detail. Perhaps they thought it would be like Thor? Or another actioner with wisecracking from the hero?

I don't know. I found this film riveting from the start. Obviously a lot of research was done, and replicated onscreen, regarding living conditions during the time period and accompanying lore ... including occasional supernatural aspects. It has a great cast. It looks like no other movie. The tale plays like a Greek tragedy. I'd heard of the director but hadn't seen any of his films. I'll check those out.

If you want Thor, don't see The Northman. If you want a great story, well filmed and well acted, DO see The Northman.

Wow! This film...
27 December 2020
It's excellent, unique, necessary, and at times it's a very tough watch. But I recommend it as highly as I can. Perfect cast. Please let Carrie Mulligan win the Oscar.

The Undoing (2020)

"Presumed Innocent" meets "Ally Mcbeal"...
6 December 2020
... without any of that show's humor or cute characters. Unbelievable courtroom drama heaven on the "Telenovela" style. Donald Sutherland should get an award for hamming it up. Many shots of Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant looking down while "acting" an unseen "eye roll." Unbelievable. 6 hours that you'll lose interest in by the 3rd or 4th hour. But you'll still be sucked in to see whodunnit.

Terminator is back, best since T2
5 November 2019
Ignore the sci-fi web fans dissing this film. It's right up there with T2. Nicely done. Good new characters, believable (for the genre) continuation of the story. Great fun. Keeping it short, and no spoilers. But if you're a fan of T1, and T2, and you're not jaded ... checking out! Well done.

i love this movie
30 July 2014
it's a very unique story and i loved it. i think that some people see this movie and are just expecting something else, maybe something more conventional. it's a clever story about linking fatherhood as an integral theme, and it's recurrence in life... mixed into a story of CIA assassins AND their targets. it's smartly written, it has a cast with complete charisma (even when delivering some corny lines here and there), it's just long enough but not too long... and it has some beautiful shots lingering on the beautiful city of Paris (DO rent the blu-ray for that detail). and this film is tightly and neatly directed. the filmmaker (mcq) has style. though he's not the director, the luc besson touch looms large over this. if you want to see a great example of NEW modern cinema, see 3 days to kill.
