My Name Is Bruce (2007)
Bruce Campbell has betrayed his fans with this letdown!!!
What can be said about Bruce Campbell. He delivered some of the best performances in the Evil Dead series but its too bad he'll never snap out of being typecast in cheap knock offs that don't get close to what the Evil Dead series established. I was eager to see this movie before it came out and actually paid to see it in a theater. This is the only film that I've ever asked for my money back. It really is that bad and falls short of anything even closely remote to the quality of the evil dead series. The effects look cheap, and the acting is even worse. I hate to say it but it looks like the worst film with Bruce Campbell and he made it himself so he has no one to blame.
The plot is ridiculous and I don't see how they could go about ripping off the Evil Dead to this extent with outlandish nods to Raimi's characters. I feel like Campbell cashed in on a role from close to 30 years ago to try to rehash something and exploit it for the sake of money. Its bad enough the guy charges as much as he does for pictures and autographs at the conventions but rushing out this lackluster effort makes me not want to see anything else hes involved in ever. Bruce's decision to continue being in bad movies like this is almost as bad as the idea to remake the evil dead but I guess even sam raimi isn't beyond bastardizing a genre that helped make him famous for a quick buck - look at the ghost house releases - nuff said.
Son of Sam (2008)
Clearly Ulli's best film and best film on David Berkowitz.
All the other reviewers are holding Ulli's other films against him. This one is easily his best in a long time and maybe the best attempt at capturing the real berkowitz on film.
If you saw Spike Lee's Summer of Sam then you know it did a pretty bad job at portraying Berkowitz and focused more on the community and the fear and hysteria that it had to deal with. This may be relevant to Spike Lee having grown up out in 1970s New York but I don't see how that was more important than David Berkowitz himself and how many people are going to relate to a film more so aimed at capturing the 70s in New York.
Ulli got it right this time and he must have done some homework as there are a few things that happen in this film(wont reveal the spoilers) that have definitely never been in a son of sam film and are directly from his life. I know its not perfect by any means but the Satanic cult backdrop and the use of the talking dog clearly showed an ambitious attempt at portraying Son of Sam correctly versus making him look like a brainless idiot (like Spike Lee's version) and if your a horror fan I don't see how you would think Lees film is better as its a bad drama. I'd like to see a studio do a film on Berkowitz and if they do they should definitely check this out for reference.
Feast II: Sloppy Seconds (2008)
Failsd miserably were the first succeeded
I really liked the first feast and thought it showed a lot of promise for gulager but then I saw this sad excuse for a horror film and am going to have to take it back. I think he tried to get a little to ambitious and the film suffered ending up a sordid mess. From terrible dialog to ridiculous set pieces with out the well done gore payout, Feast had no impact and took way to long to get started.
Another major flaw is how the creatures were shot in the day making them look like some bad film school student footage. Maybe it was the director trying to be Tarantino with flash cuts and edits but the film tried harder to be a bad action movie than anything horrific.Someone else should take a swing at this franchise as its taken a turn for the worse and its too bad.
La terza madre (2007)
WHY DARIO, WHY !?!?!?!?! was it the $$$$$
This is without a doubt the worse film I've ever seen to have Dario Argentos name on it!!! This cant be the same guy that exhibited genius in his previous films like Suspiria and Opera!!! Oh Dario, I know times are hard but did you really have to do something like this for the money? Not one scene with a shred of tension or scares and it was too bad I was laughing at the bad acting, dialogue, and ridiculous story to even remember that this film had the Argento brand on it.
I know a lot of people are hammering the writers as newbies who don't understand the genre but this is a crime what they did to Dario's career.I hope they understand he was considered an institution in horror until this debacle for a horror film and their writing factored into his demise bigtime. While I cant put all the blaim on the writers (how many people does it take to write a terrible script - in this case three - yikes)because Argento still directed it, they provided a bad base for Dario to even make worse.
Asia Argento, your hot, and I thought you were decent in previous films but this is the worse film I've ever seen you in and to think your father was directing you is even worse. I would have thought you both would have wanted to uplift this film but unfortunately you both contribute to it being a terrible genre film. Its no mystery now why this didn't come out in theaters and I'd be surprised to see anything from Mr Argento,Jace Anderson,or Adam Gierash in theaters in the future as they all clearly showed their lack of talent and disdain for the genre by destroying Argento's reputation. Give the argento remakes to anyone but argento as I could see why he doesn't deserve involvement anymore.
Boston Strangler: The Untold Story (2008)
Depalma should study this for his upcoming film on the same subject.
Brutal Kills,Tension,Scares,Beautiful Women, and a well thought out story make this a 10 in my book.
For any of those of you who aren't familiar with Mike Feifer's past true crime/serial killer productions (Ed Gein:The Butcher of Plainfield, Chicago Massacre Richard Speck, and upcoming Ted Bundy)he's fast making a name for himself as one of the best horror directors in the business.
In "The Boston Strangler:The untold story" Feifer explores the dark psychology consuming Albert Desalvo and brings a completely fresh take to the story by expanding on the possibility that Albert Desalvo wasn't really the Boston Strangler. The film suggests that Desalvo was seeking notoriety as his motive to confess to the crimes committed by the Strangler and brings in another possible suspect (played to a tee by Kostas Summer)as the true strangler. This theory was discussed for years in newspapers following the Strangler Murders but has since faded from the public's memory until now. A MUST SEE FOR THE HARDCORE HORROR AND TRUE CRIME CROWD!!!
Dracula's Guest (2008)
Forget Lost Boys, Dracula Curse is for real vampire lovers.
With the recent disappointment of Lost Boys II (Uggh), I was itching to see a good vampire film and thank god Lionsgate delivers once again.Intelligent and fright filled are the best ways to describe this dark atmospheric take on Bram Stoker's Dracula's Guest. If your expecting a cliché - 5 teens go to the woods and get killed off story then your not going to find that here as this is clearly a well thought out horror film that uses tension and scares effectively.
Not sure if it was shot in Eastern Europe but it definitely retains the period feel and has some horrific scenes in Dracula's castle that I won't spoil but horror fans will be pleased. The Lead actress is also a hottie that plays the part of the damsel in distress well.
Andrew Bryniarski plays a convincing bloodsucker and has a legion of beautiful succubi that also won't disappoint. While he may be one of the tallest actors to play the role of Dracula, he brings his own spin to the character and seems more believable as a guy from Transylvania than the usual American with dyed black hair. If your a vampire freak and love the classic Dracula films of Lugosi, Christopher Lee,and Klaus Kink then I highly recommend you add this to your Vampire Collection.
Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer (2007)
JACK BROOKS - isn't scary or funny = WEAK!!!!
I don't know why this has gotten any decent reviews as it could be the weakest horror comedy I've ever seen. Englund is just in it for a cameo and his performance is as unnecessary as most of the lame attempts at jokes (and scares). The direction is terrible and the acting is worse. It seems like every year producers are trying to make another Evil Dead but these weak unoriginal attempts are just stepping on the memory of a true horror classic.
Whether its filmmakers saying,"this isn't a remake but its an 80s throwback (which is just as unoriginal in my opinion - Hatchet) or people trying to plug this with other horror classics, Its still misleading and wont make up for the lack of scares, horror, comedy, or even a decent movie for that matter.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
Brotherhood of Blood (2007)
Sid and Ken's worst film period!!! -
First of all don't be fooled by the Foree or sid Haig being in this movie as they must have just wanted some paychecks real bad. Its the worst vampire film I've ever seen besides frost and I can't believe Ghost House chose to endorse this piece of garbage. The acting is terrible and the way its shot is like a soap opera right up in peoples faces. Barely any gore and no scares what so ever. I don't know if it was the writer, the director, or producer but it ended up coming together as a second rate attempt at a Vampire film. I wish it was as decent as the cover!!!
Hopefully the other Ghost house releases aren't as bad as this junk but I'm not all that hopeful as only half of them are in English and it seems like they're going for the quick buck.
