Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)
A whole lot of fun
The pace of this film is very high and there is so much going on all the time, it made me forget that there was so much wrong (storywise) with this picture.
Clearly it never reaches the quality of the Original Jurassic Park or even previous film J.W., still I enjoyed seeing this in the cinema.
I can imagine, if you would watch this at home, you would not enjoy it as much as I did.
The director seems to have trouble making a choice what dinosaurs to show (so he kind of showed every kind he could think of...), also the hero dinosaur keeps shifting in the story (thank god here is T-Rex.... and there is Blue again!). Some shots feature many many dino's (especialy on the Island) ... next shot (beach) nowhere a dino to be seen....
Popcorn film, very enjoyable, Starlord is fun to watch, there are dino's what else do you need?
I am curious how the story will unfold....
Scorpion: Grow a Deer, A Female Deer (2017)
Terrible
Whole season this far has not been great. This episode is the worst one so far. Could not care less about the characters realy. Seems like the cast is trying to make something off this dreadfull story but they fail.... the show used to be good
Jessica Jones: A.K.A. I Want Your Cray Cray (2018)
Flashback episode with no real twists
After several episodes that never match the greatness of the first season, this episode is a flashback of teenager Jessica and the healing of her mother. In this episode a boyfriend of Jessica is introduced, besides that there is nothing new in the whole episode. Everything you see has been told before. Little bit more in depth but bored me so much that I am not even sure this show is worth watching anymore. Clearly we mis the big bad of season one, Killgrave....
The Librarians (2014)
Enjoyed the first season, now it all seems very familiar
The first season of "The Librarians" was very entertaining and quite fresh. I had just finished watching "Warehouse 13", and as mentioned in another review, "Librarians" has a bit of the same look and feel. The cast is very entertaining and a joy to watch... then came season two... Now here is something completely different. While the show still has very much the same feeling as before and the cast is very good, it is starting to look a lot like any other show I have seen before. Warehouse 13 might have been based on the Library, but now it clearly is the other way around (new rooms appearing etc.). Also the show "borrows" immensely from "Doctor Who" (even adding time travel to the mix). In no way it reaches the level of Doctor Who, but story wise, many aha, seen that, right, just like in "Who"... (even the music seems to have been based on Murray Gold his score). Is it a bad show? Not at all, as mentioned before, cast is very enjoyable, if only the stories were more Original... such a shame. Not looking forward to a season four really...
Congo: Journey Into the Unknown (1995)
Excellent Making of feature
Recently, I rediscovered this Making of video on one of my old VHS tapes. Although it has been made some time ago, I still enjoy this feature very much. Nowadays, it seems that a "behind the scenes" feature consists of actors and crew saying how much they enjoyed working together (even if they did not). This one however, shows how much of the effects were made (without to much CGI). The voice-over of Mr. Sheen is excellent and never boring or annoying. If you have not seen the movie Congo, I still think you will enjoy watching this if you like special effects and to see how much effort goes into making a movie.
Hotel Transylvania (2012)
all the elements for a great movie...
As mentioned, the characters for Hotel Transilvania look (and sound) a lot like the characters of Despicable Me. Unfortunately it is not as great as that movie. The plot takes a long time to take off, and there is not much going on between the characters. It does have all the right ingredients for a fantastic movie (funny characters, nice animation etc.), but somehow it does not quite seem to work. It seems to me that Quasimodo was introduced to spice things up, but he literally falls out of the sky. Nevertheless, it is fun to watch and very enjoyable. Just don't expect any real surprises story-wise. You know how this is going to end when you are 15 minutes into the movie. I think with a little more effort they could have done so much more with this film...
Toy Story 3 (2010)
not for children, not for adults
These days, I watch movies in two ways. First, do I like it, second, would I show this to my children. As for the latter, I would not show this to my children (2 and 4) anytime soon. It has many dark scenes which would be too much. As for the first, did I like the whining and complaining and the occasional joke? Nah, not really. I don't understand why the rating on IMDb was so high. There is way too little humor in this movie. The rest of the scenes is not really anything we haven't seen before. A big Nazi bear who locks the hero's up and they try to escape the camp... did not get me smiling. And then all the whining, we have to get back to Andyyyy, Andyyyy loves us.. bla bla bla Now for the positive part of the review: it looks amazing! Just look at how Barbie and Ken are animated (there was an occasional smile there). Pixar really is leading in the animation field.
The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)
it's not that bad....
Even though I have not seen the original, I took the time to watch this remake. First thing that comes to mind after watching this, is that it is really really slow. There is not much going on. The story is very thin, characters do not evolve very much throughout the story, and when they do, they change their opinion so fast it does not really make any sense. So was it bad? Not really, no. I probably will never watch it again, and it is by far not a movie you must have seen once in your life... but somehow it was entertaining. The effects are very decent and Jennifer is always a pleasure to watch (but why a great actress like her chooses these strange movies to act in is a miracle). Anyway, 6 out of 10, go see it if it is on the telly and you have nothing better to do (like save the planet).
Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)
big budget, lousy cast
This movie starts of as a 'Lord of the Rings' type of film (who the narrator is and why he tells the story is never explained). Then there is a lot of walking, beautiful scenery, great effects ans some "Robin Hood" jokes... but it is all in vain. As a viewer we don't care because we don't care about the characters. Why so much money was spend on making everything look great and authentic, why not spend an extra buck on the actors? Steward is slightly less boring than in the awful "Twilight saga". And she is supposed to bring back life into the country?? She sucks the last bit out of whatever remains. No magic between her and Hemsworth. No matter how hard he tries. Claflins character is useless, guess he figured that out during filming and lost his will to perform... Theron as Ravenna has to carry the whole film. I was actually cheering for her! Yes! Finish them, please!! Also nice that she as T1000 in her mirror, but what is that doing here in this flick? So, 3 out of 10 for the rest of the crew who tried to make it look good, and another 1 for the dwarfes because they make it slightly less awful.
Valentine's Day (2010)
Can't even steal a good story
Of course this is the American remake of Love Actually. Which is fine, as long as it is done well. It is not. The movie is way too long. And I mean... way way too long. You can see where it is going after the first half hour. But most of these genre movies are like that, so that is not even the worst part. Too many plot lines make things confusing and even more slow. Don't get me wrong, there are still some surprises in this film... but they cannot make up for the predictability and slow pace of the film. Just watch "Love Actually" which is so much more fun to watch and also have a look at the Dutch remake "Alles is Liefde" which has been done very well.
Knight and Day (2010)
great cast, terrible movie
It usually is fun to see decent actors in an action packed rom-com. But this time it did not work out so well. Cruise's characters has a lot of resemblances with his Mission Impossible character. Diaz is the not so clever girl who falls in love with him. With a plot like this, I was not expecting to see great character development or a surprising twist in the plot. Just plain entertainment. Unfortunately, I was more annoyed with how stupid it all was ("what do you mean I was not supposed to use my cellphone... can they track it???" DUH!!). And almost every time I was nearly entertained (i.e. action!!) the silly girl blacks out and wakes up after the action happened. The writer must have thought, well you have seen mission impossible, you know what happens next. But since film is a very visible medium, I want to see it. He should have used this trick with the romantic parts of the story (Cruise blacks out every time it gets mushy). Also BIG surprises like "you thought this was a good guy, well he is not" and "do you think Cruise is dead while we have 30 more minutes of the movie" are plain stupid, we have seen it, does not work anymore. All in all, I was not amused, entertained or surprised... waste of money spend on the film...
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (2012)
Not too bad
The first movie was a huge surprise to me and I found it hilarious! But after seeing the second movie, I had grown tired of the "heroes" of the series. The lion just keeps complaining, nag nag nag.... pffff, the giraffe has nothing special besides being sick all the time, and as for the other two, I have no idea what makes them so special (eat the zebra and get it over with). But there were always funny bits with the penguins and the lemurs. So I was very curious about this third movie. They have introduced some new characters (thank God!), and they have a lot of screen time. Whenever the old cast is on screen, they do what they always do, nag nag, complain, wanna go home, nag nag. And of course you know how this is going to end... So, was it bad... no, not really. There are a lot of funny bits (none like in the first one). Puts a smile on your face, thats about it.
V (2009)
Loved it... but where is the ending??
I was very young when I watched the original "V" on the telly. I loved it back then, the aliens, lizards, eating the mice. So, when I discovered there was to be a remake of the old series, I was worried and excited at the same time. I was not disappointed about season 1 . It was not aired in my country, so had to get the DVD's. Glad I did, I could not stop watching. There is so much going on, and they don't seem to get any closer at defeating the enemy, it is all very surprising. Liked the cast, decent acting and some familiar faces in guest stars. It is not really sci-fi with space batles, beam me up stuff, but that might be why I like it. My wife found it to be a bit slow near the end (I disagree). Only thing I did not really like was the last character introduced in "Red Sky"(Season 1). There seems to be no reason for this woman to be there (just another "what the hey" moment). Season two starts a bit slow, but picks up speed halfway. It all gets very very exciting.... new plot lines are introduced, more action... and then it ends. It seems they could have made a nice finish with just four or so more episodes, but there are no more... Huge anticlimax. But overall, a very good show! Hope they consider making a short season three... television movie... anything to end this properly.
Dark Shadows (2012)
Very entertaining
First of all, I did not know that this was originally a TV-show, so I went in with a complete open mind, and was very entertained. As to expect when watching a Burton movie, it looks fantastic. I am not sure if this was also shot in 3d (seen it in 2d), but it is stunning. The music is also well chosen and the score by Elfman is very good (somewhere along the way it reminded me of Williams score for TinTin). As for the story, there is actually a story in the movie (seems rare these days). And although it might be a bit slow, it is captivating. There are some nice twists and turns to keep things interesting, very well done. Depps character is not as over the top as for instance Jack Sparrow, but that fits the story well. And he is a vampire, so although you gain sympathy for him, he needs to do vampire stuff. Loved the Granny! The ending (without spoiling it), well, I felt like it could have been better and the twist/surprise in the end, I saw that coming (does not mean it is bad!! not at all).
All in all, a very enjoyable movie experience, go see it in the cinema.
Looking forward to the sequel!!
The Muppets (2011)
So much fun!
While it seems that the muppets are back, they never really have left. There were of course a lot of TV-movies made in between treasure island and this one. And most of them were not that good. This movie borrows probably from all other muppet movies. Is that bad? No, because it is done right. So don't expect a great story, you know where it is going after watching it for about 5 minutes. Yet, it is so entertaining! A true muppet movie. A real shame that Frank Oz did not want to participate (I can understand that since his script did not make it to the final film). I think the only real bad thing is that one of the writers is also an actor. Jason Segel wrote a nice script... but if you also let an actor write, you can make sure that he will appear in shots where he is not needed at all. And that is exactly what happened. All that is left to say is: MORE MORE
Piranha 3D (2010)
Awful
Do not want to spend too much writing a review for this terrible film. Although it is classified as comedy, I did not have a single laugh throughout the movie. The whole film is either girls in bikini or girls in bikini getting eaten. In the end it gets a nice twist and then credits roll. No real ending, characters are not developed.... just blood blood blood. Why such great actors are involved in this picture is a mystery to me. What a waste of money and time.... The effects are pretty good, the fish look real enough. Sometimes the water looks fake. There are a lot of 3D shots in it (like you would expect in a theme park). This gets lost completely while watching it in 2D (the penis shot is just disturbing!)
