Endeavour: Coda (2016)

Superb episode, if only ....ending
25 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This was one of the best 1960's period police dramas I have seen. The acting was excellent and the story line was realistic given the times.

We learned more about Morse and his emotions particularly with respect to women in general and to his boss's daughter in particular. Only those who have seen the later Morse incarnation (the John Thaw version) would know how it was going to end. It somewhat explains his later emotional and troubled issues toward the women who come into his life.

The episode centering around a bank robbery and an old mentor from Morse's university days was well paced and full of twists and turns.

An entertaining time. I hope there will be a series 4. I think that the Morse evolution still has a long period to cover to catch up to the original series.

Fine Cast wasted
9 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Given the fine cast that this show had, perhaps my expectations were a little high. I have seen each of the main actors in other police/crime dramas where they really stood out. For example;Sheridan Smith in Jonathan Creek, Douglas Henshall in Shetland and Phil Davis in Whitechapel and Silk. Sheridan Smith did a reasonable job as a WPC managing to stay remarkably composed through the trying circumstances of her husband dying and the revelations from his undercover work. Apart from her, the other talent was wasted. The premise of the plot was quite good, but the pace was slow and the resolution unsatisfying. Should this series go for an extended run I would like to see the major talent used in more fleshed out roles.

Slow, Long and Tedious but with Potential
20 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
While I commend this show for superb production values and great acting, it is slow moving. And having watched all of the episodes so far I ask why we have to wade through 13 episodes until we get, I presume, the resolution to the real issue that is haunting this Town of Fortitude? It is far too long and tedious.

I understand the need for character development and back stories, but as a viewer I like to be entertained. Psychological thrillers can be entertaining but hard to endure if carried on for too long without a resolution Having said all of this, I believe I have figured out the real issue and, if I am right, it is one that could develop into rather interesting implications for the Town of Fortitude and the planet Earth as well. Now that would be entertaining.

Viewer acceptance will determine whether this series is going to become seasonal. If so,the producers should decide whether it's going to become an Arctic Circle soap opera, a detective series, or a thriller with world wide implications. Whatever the direction, it needs to speed up.

Disappointing remake
29 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
If you watched the original series you might be highly disappointed by this remake.

The success of the original series can be expressed in three words: Eddington, Hawthorne and Fowlds. The parts they played fit them like a Savile Row suit. Also, the scripts were pertinent to the times and the series was a welcome counterpoint to the Thatcher years.

This remake falls short in many areas. Primarily, the actors were miscast. I have seen Mess'rs Haig, Goodman and Larkin in other roles and they are very good, if not talented actors. But, respectively they did not display the diffidence, pomposity and pedantry that was depicted so well by the original players. In fact they appeared uncomfortable in their roles - like an ill-fitting suit.

In one respect this reminded me of the remake of Sgt. Bilko. Steve Martin, as talented as he is, is no Phil Silvers for whom the part was tailor made.

Secondly, while the scripts were OK, they certainly lacked the bite of those from the original. I was hoping for something more timely. The closest they came to it was when David Haig engaged Robbie Coltrane in a lively discussion of Scottish independence.

I was looking forward to seeing this new take on "Yes, Prime Minister. What I took was huge disappointment.

A waste for Hayley Atwell
7 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This was not one of the better police procedurals and frankly, a waste of Hayley Atwell's talent.

The three episodes cover a 28 year lifespan of WPC Denise Woods from 1985, when she was a Woman Police Constable to the present time, as she is now, a Superintendent. The initial criticism is that other than a change in hairstyle, she didn't age one bit. One would think that with all the stress of police work, and in this plot line she had her fair share of stress, she would show some physical scars from the strain of it all.

Her personal storyline was somewhat unbelievable. Promotion, demotion for planting evidence, and then promotion again to a senior rank somewhat strained the credibility. The overall plot stretching 28 years over three episodes left a lot of gaps in what could have been an interesting back-story - her relationship with her husband and her colleagues. Two additional episodes in might have been able to improve that and give some depth as to how she managed to regain and even surpass her previous rank and why it took so long for Denise Woods to catch the criminal she was so obsessed with from the beginning.

Hayley Atwell is an immensely talented actress and she has appeared in some great roles; Pillars of the Earth, The Sweeney, Falcon, etc., to name a few. This was not one of her better roles.

The three stars are for the production, which in itself was OK.

Great Adaptations
2 January 2012
I have read all of the Sherlock Holmes stories and watched most actors, from Basil Rathbone to Jeremy Brett play the great detective. I thought that after the untimely death of Jeremy Brett, who could ever portray Sherlock Holmes again. Well it took a bit of imagination to come up with this modern day version of the sleuth. Without deviating too much from the canon, the writers have done an outstanding job. I have watched all of the episodes up to and including the first of season 2. The casting, chemistry and plots have been more than enough to retain the integrity of Conan Doyle's works while bringing then into the twenty first century of computers, smart-phones, weaponry, etc... At the same time,I think that there has been an improvement in the Dr Watson and Inspector Lestrade characters and even Mrs Hudson has more to say. Hopefully we will see more of Irene Adler ( played by Lara Pulver). In this series she is the perfect match for Holmes. This may not happen, given that she did not appear to often in the original works.

Hidden (2011)
Good acting - disappointing finish
28 October 2011
I enjoyed the acting, Philip Glenister reminded me more of an updated "Callan", disheveled, unshaven, half asleep etc.. It was good to see David Suchet out of his "Poirot" skin for a while, although I had hoped to see more of a role for him. Anna Chancellor is a fine actress who I have seen do justice to many roles was underused, given her talents. Nevertheless the cast was well thought out and worked well together.

The storyline was another matter. The plot zig-zagged all over the place. I appreciate the need for suspense, but many questions went unanswered. Why were Gina's parents killed? (Because they were a brilliant legal team?) What had the earlier crime, the killing at Braddock House have to to do with the events 20 years later? Maybe I missed something but there seemed to be quite a few loose ends that never got resolved. And, what happened to Elspeth? The ending was not satisfying. Maybe there will be a fifth episode.

Or perhaps a new PI series based upon Philip Glenister's character. With a better plot and no loose strings, it could probably go somewhere.

Why re-invent the wheel?
17 January 2007
This movie is tepid compared to the original (Mostel/Wilder) version.

This was a successful Broadway show. Why didn't Mel Brooks just re-release the original movie, which after-all was original.

I do not see the necessity of re-producing what was to some of us a classic movie.

Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick are fine and talented actors. I found that there talents were wasted on this movie. Their efforts no doubt scored well on the stage, but did not translate too well to the big screen.

The only saving grace in this edition were the quirky performances of Uma Thurman and Will Ferrell.

I hope that we will not be treated to a newer edition of "Blazing Saddles" .

Disappointing
10 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
A terrorist act starts the movie off with a bang and in the earlier stages we were entertained with some fine forensic work. Jerry Bruckheimer brought CSI to the big screen perhaps.

In the acting department, there were also some solid performances from Denzel Washington, Adam Goldberg, Val Kilmer and Jim Calviezel.

The initial science fiction element was a treat for fans of multi-dimensional time observation and travel, and it also provided us with some interesting paradoxes.

Unfortunately, we then get into the last third of the movie. It's predictability was an unwelcome jolt to enjoyment I was getting from the film up to that time. The man goes back in time to rescue the beautiful damsel in distress and he succeeds admirably. I'm sure that the two of them will live out their days together in nirvana.

It seemed that the actual prevention of the terrorist act was secondary compared to the developing relationship between Denzel and his damsel.

This last part of film in my opinion spoiled what in many ways could have been one of the industry's better thrillers.

The changing the past element of the movie could have been handled more effectively without the falling in love element. It begs the obvious question - If the damsel-in-distress wasn't so stunning and beautiful, how quickly would Denzel's character offered to transport his body on a 50-50 do or die mission to go back into the past to rescue her. Would he have gone back just to prevent the bombing?

Oh for the days of "Quantum Leap" and "7 Days".

Streep and Thurman
22 November 2006
The movie is OK but it could be a bit edgier.

The premise - young Jewish guy and older gentile girl - is not new, but its treatment could have been stronger with a bit more of the incidental sarcasm that accompanies these kind of relationships. It does however get better in the second hour.

It is worth watching Meryl Streep and Uma Thurman in the same movie. They are both brilliant. It's a bit unfortunate that they do not play off more against each other in this flick.

There is somewhat of a resemblance between these two. I would love to see them cast in another movie, perhaps as mother and daughter.

As war movies go, pretty good.
3 December 2004
This is one of the better war movies. I am surprised it didn't get more play in the theaters.

It does show the blood, filth and "hell" of war-torn Yugoslavia in quite a realistic way, not quite as internally gutsy as "Saving Private Ryan" but real enough.

From an artistic point-of-view I enjoyed the movie and I can see the reality of love trumping danger as a women clings to the hope of finding her husband in the inferno of a combat zone.

Andie MacDowell is excellent in this role. This very attractive actress is not afraid to go grubby on camera in portraying the part of the determined wife.

Adrien Brody, in a pre-"Pianist" part is superb as an unorthodox, somewhat off-the-wall supporting role as a press photographer.

Well worth seeing.

Surprisingly Good
28 November 2003
My wife twisted my arm to get me to this movie. Given the title, I thought it was going to be a schmaltzty love, boy-meets-girl movie. Was I surprised.

The British are good in creating a movie with simultaneous storylines of which some have their typical off-the-wall humour.

This was actually a fun movie to watch, especially when the Prime Minister (Hugh Grant)criticises the US President, and when the PM does a dance.

After seeing this how many countries wouldn't want Hugh Grant as their PM.

Anyway it is a fun 2 hours. Enjoy

A Quality Horror Flick
28 November 2003
Although this movie reminds me of Stephen King's "The Stand", the story is more plausible and the ending is better.

For those who are patient, the alternative "what...if" ending that is shown after the credits is better than the actual movie finale. I suppose the actual finish is due to the Hollywood need to show some hope.

If there is a criticism, I would like to have learned how the virus evolved and why. Otherwise a good quality picture.

Arrest and Trial (1963–1964)
Ahead of Its Time.
15 July 2003
This short-lived series was excellent TV for its time.

Half the show was about the police and the other half was about the courts. In the context of some of the TV we see today, doesn't this have a familiar air about it?

"Law and Order"and it's various spin-offs are presently among the most popular shows on TV. This tends to suggest that "Arrest and Trial" was perhaps 40 years ahead of its time.
