Talk to Me (2022)
Talk to the Hand
Talk to Me is an overrated and non-memorable movie. I suspect because the horror genre has so many lesser quality films this one received higher scores than I believe it deserves. While it is an entertaining watch with an excellent possession scene, it falls short of creating chills. Selon moi, it was not deep, complex, or compelling enough to make the hair on the back of my neck rise or create genuine fear. I had higher hopes based on the reviews and chose it for the All Hallow's Eve "Monster Horror Movie Night" (a throwback to the 80's SCTV era, where Joe Flaherty would introduce films as a vampire who howls like a werewolf).
The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
Some kind of awful
Please do not waste your time watching this! If you can't help yourself, realize that what you see in minute one continues through minute 122. This may be the worst movie I've ever seen. My partner concurs (pun intended).
Some kind of awful. Aaaaaaaaaaaaagh
Infinity Chamber (2016)
Once
Once every so often, the science-fiction genre sends us film which reminds us of why some of us keep watching. Infinity Chamber is one of those reasons. A strong lead actor, unpredictable and intriguing plot, impressive cinematography, and an understated loves story make this one worth viewing. It's not for everyone, but genre fans will see its' merit.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Newer Hope
To me, the theme of Star Wars cinema is hope. The first movie had it in the title, the 2016 film character Jyn offered, "Rebellions are built on hope", and to his credit Rian Johnson masterfully took hope to another level in The Last Jedi. His unpredictable plot and storyline elevated this story to the level of one of the greats, almost comparable to the caliber of Empire and Rogue.
Seeing Luke once again in lightsaber battle was mesmerizing. The humour of Chewie and what I've been calling the gophers on the Falcon was actually humorous, like the dialogue of the droid K2 in Rogue One, removing the cheese from the humour of the earliest droids and the silliness of the non-humour of Jar-Jar.
I would have scored this a 10, but I didn't find there was a scene that caused my adrenaline to race, such as in The Force Awakens, when Rei, engaged in battle with Kylo, becomes calm, embraces the Force, and becomes the stronger of the two combatants.
One other element of script writing and realization by Rian Johnson that is worthy of mentioning is in relation to his ability to create flashbacks to earlier films in the mind of the viewer. There were those moments in The Last Jedi, and that Jedi-like ability is admirable.
Logan Lucky (2017)
Third best to date of 2017
This film sneaks up on you, starts out with just enough character development for you to buy in, adds a little red-neck humour and charm, and then, "BANG", it turns into a cool and intelligent heist movie. Subtly done, Mr. Soderbergh! The best film of its' genre since Inside Man. P.S. 1. Wind River. 2. Baby Driver
Alien: Covenant (2017)
Blown ending
This movie played well until late, but giant plot holes in the road towards the finish line left me disappointed. Firstly, any scientist or space traveller would have figured things out prior to re-hibernation. Secondly, why have quarantine protocols if no one will even consider following them? Would the captain really be that trusting (ie stupid) with pods? The story sells the characters short, and thus this fails at the climax. Too bad, I was enjoying it until...
Westworld (2016)
Serious
The impressive acting of Louis Herthum as Delores' father and Jeffrey Wright should garnish talk come awards season. Creepy performances by Ed Harris and Evan Rachel Wood are also noteworthy. This series may be the best thing on TV since Game of Thrones arrived six seasons ago. I recommend you check this one out, and pay particular attention to the nuances of the actors noted above. I hope this series can continue on the same pace, it's a real treat so far. If so, we will see a few members of this cast and crew on stage at the Golden Globes and Emmys in the new year. This show outshines the original, which also made the hair stand up on the back of your neck, and was well acted by Yul Brynner, in the best role of his career. Enjoy! Attention! Episode 5, Anthony Hopkins Interview of "Delores", is the best bit of abting I've seen on TV in decades, and his best since Silence.
Go with Me (2015)
Way bad
What's wrong with this film? In a word, everything. One dimensional characters which make it impossible for the viewer to connect with or have sympathy for, an unrealistic plot, a director who absolutely dropped the ball, he is unable to create any suspense. Even a strong cast could not work with this weak material and lack of direction. It is clear that the actors could not figure out what the point was either. Other than seeing the BC scenery, this film has no redeeming qualities, it is a waste of your time, unless, like me, you laughed at how silly it was. Blackway is my choice for the rotten tomato award of the year, the past several years actually.
Green Lantern (2011)
Genre
As comic-genre film, this is surprisingly solid. It is well-acted and has good character development. I found this film to be more entertaining and less predictable than this years crop from Marvel, although I did enjoy the blonde God of Thunder. Ye other critics need not to forget this is still based on a comic lest ye be too critical. It will be interesting to see if the proposed sequel will make it to production. If so, they better find someone who can create a stronger script, like Paul Haggis. The latest caped crusader films took comic- based films to the next level, where Chris Columbus delivered 9 to10 star films.
