Dance of the Dead (2008)
Just watched it last night
I've got to give this film high points, for it's content and script. Very good work the characters are very interesting the high school coach is very funny. The mysterious grave yard keeper very intriguing you have to wonder who is this guy working for. I was anticipating a really bad "b" flick but got a real gem of a film. I love Zombie films it's always a treat finding a film like this. One that can go proudly into the collection and take a place in time as one of the cult classics it will surely become. It's one of those zombie films like Shawn of the Dead that will be praised as a great film ten years from now.
If you like zombie films with a little light hearted fun this film is excellent.
Run Ronnie Run (2002)
Very funny
I was late getting around to seeing this one. Didn't see "The Show" but this movie reminded me of Joe Dirt meets Jackass in that you have a ridiculous character on a verity of adventures and completely crazy antics that absolutely carry this film. It was fun the script was very well written and as I said before making a comedy is one of the hardest movies to make. This one certainly does justice to comedy, threw out the film you never had to think about anything, you can sit back and really enjoy this mindless yet hilarious film. I think the best thing about this film is it's forward momentum and once it gets going it doesn't let up until the end.
-Spoiler- My favorite part in the film has to be the first time the English sales man/producer meets Ronnie. The metaphors being used while they are climbing up the scaffolding had me rolling, honestly never laughed so hard at such a silly dialog. What a really funny movie. Not the greatest comedy but not the worst this will be one for my DVD collection. It's a keeper.
The Mist (2007)
Loved it but not the ending
Director Frank Darabont did a really nice job on this film. I thought it was very creepy and for most of the film you have a feeling that you are trapped in some hellish mess and like the characters you are unaware of the reason this is happening.
Love Stephen King his books are some of my favorites but unfortunately I think Mr King has problems ending some of his literature and the directors who tackle the project seem to have problems ending the film also. Even directors who obviously hated the ending change them up a bit in the films still lack the conclusive and powerful ending. The ending here is no different than most of the films based on Kings work. It always seems to fall into a non-intelligent spiral of what the heck was that.
We have a group of people who are fighting for there very lives threw out this beautiful production then right at the end all they can think to do is ... -spoiler-
... kill each other? I'm sorry this isn't what would have happen to anyone who has fought so long and hard to stay alive. This isn't the actions of a survivor.
The real story: At the end as the car is running out of fuel our survivors look at each other and jokingly say "looks like we are walking the rest of the way" knowing if something goes wrong the father still has a few shots in the pistol to be used on themselves instead of dieing a gruesome death. The group staying close together moves down the road slowly without making a noise a long time passes the car far behind them now when suddenly a huge monster emerges from the "fading" mist. The creature poised to attack rears up to make a deadly strike as the father looks down at his child. When suddenly an A10 warthog comes screaming in, auto cannon blazing blowing the deadly creature into a mass of jello. The mist clears and the army trucks begin moving down the road one stops to assist and our heroes have survived to tell the tale.
That's what I think of when I see this film not the crap ending that was actually used.
They (2002)
Reminds me of a variety of boogeyman type films
This isn't going to be a long review as many here have provided a lot of information on this film.
My question is just WHY? This is not a film for "thinking people" as someone said here and this is so true.
There are by far much better films based on spooky shadow creatures feeding on humans and there victims fear. As far as technical directing this film is a waist of time. I don't understand what the director was doing in this film it simply needed to be remade before it came out.
If you haven't seen it rent it, borrow it from a friend who owns it, but please don't buy it unless like me you found it cheap in a bargain bin.
I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry (2007)
And the moral of the story is ...
Why do comedies have to approach subjects with some kind of moral lesson to be learned? Isn't the reason most of us see a comedy is to laugh and not have to think about weighted or serious topics? Sure if done well you can lighten up a serious topic with some funny or put some funny in a horror film but when you start out with funny why not keep it that way? Comedies are probably the hardest films to make IMO there is only the directer and the crew that are saying "Hey, this is funny" point is a comedy is very hard to pull off, timing is everything, the way the film is edited is everything, and the talent of your actors to pull off the funny is also everything. If just one of these elements are not right a comedy can fail terribly.
I would have rather seen a more nonsensical film about two strait guys getting married and keep the laughs going. But the film stops so many places to remind us that hatred towards gays is wrong. Any non-idiot knows that only idiots protest against someones rights. So why, why the big moral lesson in what could have been a very funny, light hearted, film.
I would have removed the religious protest group, the outnumbered scenes of homo phobia some were funny some, just too many or drawn out too long. I wanted more interaction between the kids and Chuck and Larry more scenes with the lawyer and brother, just more hilarious interaction between fewer characters in the film. Then wrap it up as they did. The ending was good. And a good place in any comedy to make a serious point but then leave them laughing.
So, yea I liked the film. Was it a real comedy? That's something of an opinion, to me no to a hundred other people it would be a comedy. I think it's a more serous work that makes you stop and think and stop and think and they threw in some funny to lighten up a serious topic.
My favorite parts of the film; Ving Rhames each and every scene the guy was in. The man is phenomenal. If you have seen "Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead" you'll understand what I'm talking about, talk about a versatile actor. And Jessica Biel what a beautiful woman she is, not the lead comedian in the film by any stretch of the imagination but OMG she has my vote as the sexiest woman of 2008! Anyway my two cents it's not a total waist of time to see. If your expecting a light hearted romp threw comedy with Adam Sandler this is not the movie for you.
Death Proof (2007)
Two words "Kurt Russell"
I love to see an established actor pull off a bit of acting that he/she has never done before. Especially an established actor that is playing in a joke type movie. You cannot be actually critical of the film because it's bad and is supposed to be bad. A film like this can only be graded on how bad it is and if so it deserves a 10. But that's not what I'm grading here, and I'm not grading Quentin Tarantino on whether he pulled it off or the writing or camera work because it was all fine to just OK but what I am really grading is Kurt Russell.
What an amazing piece of work, what an amazing job acting this part. He plays one of the most disturbing, evil, messed up characters I think Kurt has ever played. I was shocked and reeling and kept looking deeply at the screen always questioning "is that Kurt Russell?" and finally when it sank in I couldn't believe it. This is the kid who played in Herbie the love bug, escape to witch mountain and portrays one of my favorite on screen hero's as Snake Plissken. This is Kurt our Stunt man Mike? Wow, words cannot describe the chill that went threw me the unnerving feeling that Kurt achieved in this role. He was insanely evil, disturbing and so excellent.
You may have hated this film, you may have thought the camera work was bad, the grain effect was over played, the other actors maybe not that good, the script weak. But it was Kurt that pull this movie into 5th gear and drove it hard and fast the whole way to hell.
Amazing!!!!
Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (1966)
They don't make'm like this anymore
Like many here have already said what can you say that hasn't been said over the years about this film.
Made in 1966 (67) it has weathered the years and still today holds any top ten slot for spaghetti westerns of any decade the world over. Very few films can hold a candle to the Good the Bad and the Ugly. Few indeed can say after 50 years we made a brilliant film that is still loved by millions. This is truly a great film. One of my favorite westerns that sits proudly in my collection right beside "Once upon a time in the West", "My name is Nobody." and well "Two mules for sister Sara", and a hand full of others with Clint staring as the Bad bleep gun fighter he is.
Absolutely beautiful in all regards. My two cents.
Masters of Horror: The Screwfly Solution (2006)
Awesome!
I will rarely give a film a 10 but this film is one of those films that stays with you day's even weeks after you watch it. It is one of my wife's and I favorite "Master of Horror" films.
Joe Dante director gives this story real life and real terror the kind that jumps out at you grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go. It's creepy, it's disturbing, and it's completely alien in so many ways. A film of genocide and of survival but how do you survive what is never going away. The world ends the night comes and you will never see the light of day again. That's the overall expression of this film. If you haven't seen it go get it. It's a keeper for any true horror collector.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)
Silly entertainment
I have to give this movie a strong 6 points out of 10. The reasons are simplistic as was the film and the films budget.
Yea, it's a "B" film but Director Stephen Chiodo and his team of writers Edward and Charles Chiodo made a fun film about a group of aliens that feed on humans in the guise of clowns. I thought the idea was brilliant. This 1988 classic made long before polished CG effects still astonishes us with interesting visual effects. That's why this film deserves every bit of a 6/10 rating. Because it is truly cheese; tough in cheek film making I cannot give it a 10 unless we are rating the cheese factor than a 10 it would be.
The Chiodo brothers seem like this film was just fun a light humor comedy with a horror slash sci-fi feel that provides a entertaining experience for even the most critical of horror fans.
This is just a fun and outrageous film that still holds it's own over the years.
Halloween (2007)
Do we care?
I cannot rip up the beautiful camera work or lighting or anything technical or even the performances of the actors as I felt Rob Zombie did a excellent job creating a great visual film with talented people.
However... Here is my main problem with this film. -spoiler-
Do we care how Mike grew up? Would it have mattered if Mike came from a strict religious back ground were he begins to sink into the darkness of evil or if he was raised by a loving family but had emotional problems and sank into the darkness of evil. What would it matter? Mike is a born product of pure undying evil. That's the bottom line why try and explain the obvious. What does it matter about the touchy feely ideas of Mikes childhood ... who cares. Are we to believe that this makes it more real to understand how he grew up so we can get into his mind and understand the killer better? Rob should have tackled one of the sequels to the film that were really bad. Like Halloween 4 for example now I would have loved to see better sequels and this is where a director should use his energy in improving the crap sequels that are produced from a classic movie. Halloween the original film is something I feel didn't have to be re-made it stands on it's own.
Simply some classics should be left alone Mr. Zombie would have done better at a remake of the Wizard of Oz. Where we could get into the mind of the wicked witch and understand how she grew up and why she is so hateful. Yea, real important to know. Wish people would really leave the great classic films alone.
Just my humble opinion.
28 Weeks Later (2007)
What was I thinking?
I bought the film out of a bargain bin at a local store paid only 5 bucks and I want my money back! It is definitely not the worst sequel as some have said here and I didn't hate the film and I am just joking about wanting my money back. But was very disappointed (not that 28 days was very good) but I did know what I was getting into from seeing the first film. I felt Juan Carlos Fresnadillo the director kept the movie on track and presented it in tradition to 28 days however I didn't find the movie intelligent.
Really the entire chaos that brings down the safe haven they worked so hard to achieve was brought down by some chick and her brother because she wanted to go home for her favorite pair of shoes???? (well wasn't exactly shoes but you get my point.) If you've seen this movie you have to ask yourself is this the only way the disease "Rage" could have infiltrated them? This was the best the writers could come up with and the director did not throw the script in there faces and shout "Not Intelligent gentlemen re-write it or I quit!" Why not rats or birds causing the epidemic to get in or anything except some stupid ... wow "let's break out of the safety of this beautiful place disobey everyone steal a scooter and go home so I can collect up a pair of shoes a picture or two ... oh hey mom what you doing up here?" What the hell were they thinking? Sorry not a very well done. No not well done at all.
Mom would have taken a sniper round in my movie 200 feet out from the city along with the sister and brother. With a CG on the bullet tracking behind the shot until impact upon there foreheads. Now that's what would have really happen.
What I did like was the directors and writes experimenting with the idea of someone being immune to "Rage" that was interesting how they handled it. But there were just to few redeeming qualities to this film to score it very high IMO.
I really wanted this to be better than 28 days I really wanted them to make it more intelligent than 28 days but to me it fell short of the mark it made me hope there will not be a 28 months later but I think by the looks of the ending we have been set up for the next bad release of 28 months later. This frightens me more than the films do! If you haven't seen this yet and are a fan of the first film it's worth a watch; is it something you'll be watching again and again probably not. So don't buy it if it's over 6 or 7 dollars or you really will be asking yourself. "What was I thinking about?"
Plane Dead (2007)
100% Entertainment
I would have given it a ten if Samuel L. pop out of nowhere and said "I want these zombies off the f!@#$% plane right F!@#$ now!" What a entertaining film this was. Flew under the radar for even the best of zombie fans. I have turned on so many people to this film who are crazy horror fans and even crazier zombie fans that never heard of this film. It's everything the title says it is but must agree with those here the title is rightfully and simply "Zombies on a Plane". It doesn't get any better than that.
Director Scott Thomas, even though working with a limited budget really makes a "B" movie look great. Camera, lighting and sound were all wonderful sometimes in a low budget production things are not always this good; sometimes the sound is poor at times, the lighting fails in some scenes, camera work is hurried, but not with this film. You can tell a lot of love went into this movie and that my friends is what makes a bad movie great.
If you haven't seen it do so. This isn't that movie you'll buy and only ever watch it once. I was very entertaining and is worth more than one viewing guaranteed.
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Possibly one of the greatest Zombie Films
Well it may just be my favorite zombie film.
Just wanted to comment that the camera work was excellent the way the camera and lighting are used threw this film provides such emotion and clarity to the film I can sit and watch it with the sound off that's how good Zack Sniders work is.
The actors were absolutely believable, out standing performances from Ving Rhames, Jake Weber, Sarah Polley, and Inna Korobkina and so many more I cannot list. The entire cast was just so good.
I know this is a late review but have just joined IMDb and this movie was one that I had to make mention to.
If you love zombie films as I do this film will in no way disappoint you. Even though this is a remake of the original 1978 film by George A. Romero which is a classic and love but Zack Sniders work here really blew me away.
A must see, absolutely amazing.
Cloverfield (2008)
Not that intelligent a film
Well for those who loved this film well, sorry you didn't see the same film we did. For those who hated this film well, your not that far off from true enlightenment. For those who thought it was OK we have given this film a better review than it probably deserved.
It was just OK for me. I just seen it and didn't know anything of the film before hand.
I enjoy intelligent film making where the technical details and realism is somewhat in check. This movie was not in any way remotely kept in check.
Didn't mind the first person filming (that much) but would have been nice to see other shots to add to the realism and emotions of the characters. First person filming in this way creates confusion and disorientation as to were you are like, "is the camera on the ground" or "against a wall" very disorienting. Cannot place this with Blair Witch as that film was total crap this film did have some redeeming factors that Blair Witch did not have. (Like a budget)
Problems I have with this film. -spoilers-
IMO Both characters at the end were dead long before they made it to hide under the bridge. The girl with the re-bar threw the (left) shoulder and near her heart and they lift her body and slide the re-bar threw her ... yea, she would have bled out in no time and passed out from the pain yet she is very mobile and the use of her left arm was amazing after suffering that type of injury.
The guy after the heli crash (her pseudo boyfriend) suffers a leg injury that requires a belt to be used as a tourniquet yet he remains extremely mobile and doesn't bleed out before they reach the bridge at the end no way in hell is that possible.
The massive injury suffered by the quiet girl in the subway tunnel wasn't even bleeding when we see her back and she really doesn't seem to be in any real pain or seems to have a life threatening injury by the way the other characters react to it. she says "how does it look" , reply "it looks like it hurts" but she isn't crying, wheezing, moaning heck she is fine.
There are way to many non-intelligent items in this film to list here and agree with other comments here about how ...
You don't care about the characters they are stupid and not believable. I cared more for the monster I really did. After they bombed it and the guy is recording it from the chopper I was worried until I seen the monster preform that amazing jump up to the chopper and caused it to crash was the first time I was excited in the film "He's OK!" wow that was an amazing jump. I thought the chopper was higher but I guess somehow it dropped altitude and the monster got it.
Yea, thank god it was a rental for me. This is the reason why I attend very few movies at the theater each year.
