Clash of the Titans (2010)
An Epic Disappointment
After viewing Clash I can definitely say that I favor the original. First, the writers took an awful lot of liberties when re-writing the script-adding characters while editing out others (the owl). The entire purpose in the original was for Perseus' to save the princess from a horrible fate and win the kingdom as well as the princess' hand in marriage. In the remake, Perseus is completely uninterested in becoming king after saving the princess--unbelievable. For me, the biggest disappointment was actually the 3D. The last time I saw a 3D film was Michael Jackson at Disney World in the early 90's. I was so excited to see a 3D film but found myself taking my glasses off several times to focus on the fuzzy figures during Clash. The 3D was absolutely pointless. I mean, where was the arrow flying or the tip of the sword striking out from the screen into the audience? The 3D just really didn't make any sense to me. I was hoping for a better remake of a classic.
Under the Tuscan Sun (2003)
Girl power in Tuscany
This colorful film portrays a woman, played by Diane Lane, moving to Tuscany to escape the troubles inflicted upon her by a failed marriage and its aftermath. She experiences further heartache and troubles along the way but ultimately she creates her own happiness amongst her friends in her new life.
I love girl power movies in which this one is but I am a little disturbed by the fact that Lane's character essentially runs away to create a new life for herself as if to say if you move to Italy your troubles will go away. I most enjoyed the personalities in this film and Lane's relationships with her neighbors and friends. The on screen chemistry amongst the characters was cheerful and genuine and the ending was very hopeful. If you are feeling down about your relationships just pop this film in and you will feel up lifted.
Twilight (2008)
Twilight ? how about twidark !
Im not familiar with the Twilight series and I didn't hear about this movie until a couple days before it was released in theaters so I didn't know what to expect when seeing this movie. I felt that the main characters Edward and Bella were exceptionally "dark" as though both characters have been long oppressed. This isn't the case though as we see that in Bella's new school everyone makes a huge effort to befriend her. I felt as though the supporting staff including Edward's family could have received more on screen attention. I realize that the film is a love story between teenagers but their romance was intensely PG rated for me. I only recall them sharing one or two kisses. The romance reminded me of the movie Cry Baby starring Johnny Depp. The violence, on the other hand, was more intense then the romance aspect. There is a clip in which a young vampiress snaps the neck of an enemy. The enemy is subsequently burned. Lastly, for individuals who are not familiar with the Twilight series this film does a poor job of explaining how Edward's vampire family developed. I was hoping to learn a bit more about Edward's past and that of his family. Not much is known. As a suggestion to older audiences, I would wait to see this film until it comes out in stores or I would wait until the hype dies down because the majority of the audience was young anxious teens screaming and jumping around the theater.
The Haunting of Molly Hartley (2008)
rosemary's baby revisited
Well I typically don't read the comment before mine but I decided to take a little peak just to see if I was the only one that thought this movie was a waste of time. There is nothing extraordinary about this flick in fact its your typical fright fest though without the scares. Feel free to get up for a snack break or visit the bathroom at any time because you wont miss anything upon your return.
Its a film about your average teenager who is running from a secret past. Her father forces her to attend a new school in a new city even though the secrets from her past continue to haunt both her and her father. and well thats about it. With a very unoriginal plot I struggled to honor this movie with a three.
Iron Man (2008)
Hi-tech action thriller
I was a little reluctant to watch Ironman because I wasn't very impressed by a storyline in which a billionaire war profiteer turns into a superhero. I was even a bit more skeptical when I learned that Downey Jr. would be playing the lead role. Downey Jr. first caught my attention in U.S. Marshals and since then I have always looked forward to watching him on the big screen. Again his witty personality and charm wins me over in Ironman although I must admit I was more captivated by Bridges and Paltrows performances. I was never a fan of Paltrow until I saw her in Ironman as Starks (Downey Jr.) kind hearted and clever assistant. I only wish that she had been given a bit more screen time. This high energy action packed film will appeal to most audiences though I wouldn't waste your money buying it...I would just rent it or borrow it instead like I did.
Kickboxer (1989)
Van Damage in Thailand
The first time I saw this film I was in pig tails and still had all my baby teeth. Later this film made me fall head over heals for Van Damme! Its a story about two American brothers who travel to Thailand. The eldest becomes paralyzed in a kickboxing fight which provokes his younger brother (Van Damme) to learn kickboxing from an elder skilled in the art. Later, the highly trained younger brother sets out to avenge his brother in a match that could end up costing him his life. The only thing I found unappealing in the film was the music. However, the film also has some comedy points such as when his master attached a pork chop to his thigh and sends his German Shepard running after Van Damme.
