Domain of the Damned (2007)
Please don't waste your time
Okay, first off. I'm willing to give any independent feature film a chance. I know going in that time, money and just resources are at a low for the director and his crew. But this was a waste of almost two hours of my time. Number one on my list is the story. What? There was no "story". It felt like a bunch of random ideas put into a film. This made it hard to follow, it made the characters so indistinguishable I couldn't remember any of their names, and it made me wonder what the hell the writer/director was thinking. As far as the visual look of the film, I won't go so far as to call it terrible (at least the camera is in focus...) but the constant changing of the look (from red to green then back to read then back to normal) was migraine inducing. This also made it hard to follow the action. The practical effects were good but this does not save your movie. The CGI on the other hand falls into the bad Sci-Fi Channel realm. I give the director tons of credit for getting his film made. But there is no excuse for this. This films falls into the same category as a lot of other low budget features of directors reaching higher than their budget will allow them to go. Keep it simple, keep it direct and c'mon man keep me entertained enough to where maybe I'll forgive some of the poorer aspects of your film. But this does not have any redeeming factor. Not even that great B-movie cheese. Do yourself a favor and pass on this flick.
Closet Space (2008)
Lovecraftian? What?!
I'm going to agree with some of the other reviewers and start off by saying that I hate to be mean. But sometimes you just have to be honest. I saw this in a packed theater here in Houston and have to admit, at first I was excited. The notion of seeing a super low budget horror flick in theaters appealed to me. I love the DIY ethos and love the fact that it would be displayed in a public setting. But from the beginning that enthusiasm quickly drained. I mean, there are lots of things one can forgive in low-budget flicks. But the one thing I cannot forgive is an out of focus camera. At first I thought hmmm maybe it's just that one shot...but it played for almost an entire scene...and it made it in the film. The other thing is the constant comparisons I've read to this honoring Lovecraft. Maybe Stuart Gordon's interpretation to what he thinks Lovecraft's writing was, but I don't see anything even remotely "Lovecraftian" in execution. There was bad ADR, there was the bad acting...there was even a moment at the end of the flick where all is revealed (I won't give away what) and the audience (at least myself) knows exactly what has happened yet the main character says exactly what has just happened, like the filmmakers thought their audience was stupid. Just pass on this flick and don't bother wasting your time.
Witchcraft 13: Blood of the Chosen (2008)
Its got 13 in the title...it must be good!
Man, I got super excited when I saw the title to this flick...Witchcraft 13! Oh my god this has got to be one awesome flick. I mean from the moment it started I couldn't wait for it to be over so they could get to making number 14! I mean the darks were so dark I couldn't tell what was going on...AMAZING! And the acting...let me tell you about the acting. It was so great it was bad. The actors are so good they didn't even need to give their A game. And Plot? Who needs plot when you got a story this great. And man the line reading is just...man I can't say it enough...AMAZING! All I gotta say is that I can't wait for part 14...because part 13 was that bad...I mean good.
