Malum (2023)
Malum is a bad remake of Last Shift
What's that saying, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. That's true for this film. In Last Shift, the budget was low and the work was honest and true. In the remake, they sweep low for weak scares, explain little, expect us all to just nod and jump. The over emphasis on the stupid relationship with the awful father is yawn worthy. The stupid strict dedication to the police code but she doesn't know any cops but her dad that cops hate? AND she becomes a cop at the office where her father was hated. Brilliant self sabotage. It felt overly produced and just overall not as good as the original and feels more like a money grab that will fail.
That Dirty Black Bag (2022)
Lazy Dude's Review: Ambitious beginning mildly dilutional ending
I started this series right after I got my AMC+ subscription and immediately felt glad I made the decision. To start, I love Stephen King's Gunslinger series with it's desolation and weird magic. This show had some of that feel initially. There was creepy mystery and a dark feel of preternatural presence through the opening episodes. That hooked me.
The dark mystery of the series begins to fade into confusing time lines and less and less spookiness that evolves into long dramatic conversations and stares into the distance.
There's a feel that the show lost it's way a bit in the middle and then the ending is tied up loosely, clearly intending a second season.
The writing of one of the primary characters is a bit misleading, as well. Marco, for example, starts out the series almost seeming like a bumbling sheriff that is more Michael Scott than Wyatt Earp. Then they sort of throw us for a loop when he turns out to be a supreme bad ass, which is fine... just different.
I hope they return to the dark spooky themes when they return for a second season, if they do.
Family Guy: Holly Bibble (2020)
I love FG but this episode just wasn't any good
I watch FG like some people watch The Office. Over and over again. I love the humor and the usually accurate and poignant clips at society, religion, and art. This episode, however, lacked that usual (and expected) intelligent and witty aspect. They attempted to do a story episode based on the Bible, but didn't take any time to even research the subject. It would be like turning on the Star Wars episodes and they were some Star Wars with Star Trek with Battle Star Galatica. It just wouldn't make any sense and it would be obvious they didn't know about what they were talking. It could've been hilarious, but if you know even a modicum of the Bible, it just comes out as dumb and lazy.
