Veronica Mars (2014)

Royal Flush (down the toilet)

I watched about half of this film before turning it off. It's not anything like the original TV show. It appears as though young script writers think that no one will watch a movie or TV show today without every other line being bathroom humor, sexual innuendo, or blatant penis jokes. This film is a urinal full of both. From the very beginning of the film we are supposed to believe that the intelligent and savvy Veronica has had to weather the fallout of a sex tape she participated in that went viral on the Internet. Really? Is this the same cautious, thoughtful, and methodical Veronica that spent three popular seasons on the air ten years ago? I'm sorry, but I found this movie to be a big turnoff because I could not get past the raunchiness of the characters. The disappointment comes from expecting more from the folks who originally created a well-written, youth-oriented, high tempo, contemporary program in the early 2000's. If the original writers were involved in this disaster, it is not evident. The actors in this project should embarrassed by this film. I was embarrassed for them.

Booooooring

I was 12 years old when this film was made. I remember the sex comedies from the 60s and this is no comedy. I recently watched this movie with a friend who wanted to see it because Leonard Maltin gave it 3 1/2 stars. Well, good old Leonard must have been seeing stars when watching this one. I would have given it a BOMB rating. It was intended to be a comedy. The only thing missing was a laugh track. And it sure needed one. If you enjoyed TV shows like "Love American Style" or "Three's Company," then you might enjoy giving up 90 minutes of your life to watch this very poor film. First of all, the premise was not even believable. As one reviewer mentioned, Walter Matthau plays a character who has not even lost interest in his wife played by knockout beauty Inger Stevens. He's just toying with cheating on her because he thinks he is supposed to because it's the liberated and sophisticated 1960s. Oh, brother. I am embarrassed for director Gene Kelly. Think about it. There a reason why this film is rarely mentioned. It's a waste of time.

A Milestone in Film History

The last time I felt this emotionally attached to a film was when my mother took my brother and me to see "To Kill a Mockingbird" in the summer of 1962. It's been a long time.

"Brokeback Mountain" is the most remarkable film I have ever experienced. It reaches into your heart and deep down into your gut and pulls out those feelings that we try most of our lives to suppress.

Heath Ledger as Ennis Del Mar and Jake Gyllenhaal as Jack Twist bring to life two beautiful characters who turn their lives upside down trying to deal with their love for each other. Ang Lee, Larry McMurtry, Annie Proulx and this wonderful cast have magically illustrated the importance of Shakespeare's message, "To thine own self be true."

If I could keep only one film in my collection it would be this one.
