The Holdovers (2023)
6/10
Pleasant Film
21 January 2024
I'm not exactly clear why the movie is listed as both a comedy and a drama on IMDB. The movie didn't seem to have very much humor to it. It's a warm and inviting story. A nice film. Nothing ostentatious or extravagant. The picture features strong acting and a realistic depiction of the era, which is 1970 into 1971. As a senior in high school at the time, I particularly enjoyed hearing some of the music from that era.

My rating of 6 teetered between a 6 and 7. But, since the plot didn't elicit any significant emotions or reactions in me, I decided to give it a lower rating. It's a likeable movie, as I mentioned above.

Boring...Mediocre At Best
7 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
At best, the movie was average. The narrative is somewhat heartbreaking but never reaches a high degree of intrigue. I had the impression that I was constantly waiting for the big reveal, the big twist, or the moment that would pique my curiosity, but it never materialized.

From the protagonist's lover's death until the revelation of the unidentified affair, there were opportunities to set up the film, but it failed to elicit the necessary emotions. I'm not sure if this makes the film more realistic than other films where I found the characters were more sympathetic and relatable. All the movie did for me, though, was make itself seem dull.

An Irrecoverable Love Story
2 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The film follows an Army squad on the battlefield in 1968 during the Vietnam War. The story is told with a lot less fanfare than typical war movies, yet it is quite effective in its approach as the soldiers become the main focus. Each member of the squad gives memorable performances, and two lieutenants are uncommonly portrayed as being in love.

The secret mission the squad eventually undertakes benefits the U. S. military. Yet, the sense that no good ever comes from war, only tragedy and sorrow, is deeply felt as the devastating loss of life eventually ensues. I highly recommend this film for its magnificent portrayal of the many losses associated with war.

Didn't Work!
27 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The movie just didn't work. Was it the directing, the acting, the dialogue or maybe the entire script? I don't really know, but something didn't work. The characters delivered lines as if being read directly from a page. It seemed that half of the time the dialogue was trying to either explain the plot or teach everyone the meanings of the plot.

All of the actors were attractive, but none of the characters being portrayed seemed like real people. Thus the characters created no feelings or empathy for me, including the 10-year dilemma. And the dilemma, after being mentioned at the beginning of the film, was barely touched upon and seemed to go by the wayside as the movie progressed.

The two lead characters, Myles and Brody, had no real chemistry between themselves throughout the film. So, at the end I was actually hoping that Myles would continue on and get to New York. But, sadly the movie had to have a happy ending between two characters who did not seem to belong together and definitely did not seem to be in love.

I just finished watching another film, Love or Whatever, from 2012 and although it was not an award winner film by far, at least the quirky characters seemed somewhat real and created some feelings for me for them. By the end, I was rooting for a happy ending and hoping the main protagonist would find love.

Attractive Brothers Thwarted by the Times
1 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is somewhat interesting but confusing. I'd call the movie a drama with horror due to the murders and not a thriller since it is not that exciting. The first 50%, or so, of the film focuses on the brother, Borja, then the next segment is primarily with the two brothers, Borja and Vincente, and the ending with Vincente (as Borja).

Borja accepts his homosexuality, but the film doesn't really go anywhere with that which gets a little frustrating. Vincente does not accept being gay which is probably due to the timeframe of the film, 1986, when being gay was still widely unaccepted. Also, Vincente, longing for the company of men, experienced horrors with his father's suicide (who was also gay), negative cruising experiences and eventually even his brother's murder by his mother.

With the murder of his brother, Vincente apparently assumes the identity of Borja in order to give himself permission to fulfill his own desires. But, again his desires only end in horror, as Vincente believes he and his entire family have been cursed by the loveless marriage of his father and mother. He even bids a farewell to his brother and mother at their gravestone that he'll see them in hell someday.

As to why Vincente's supposed lover has murderous intentions at the end is beyond me. I guess it's keeping with the spirit of the times, 1986-1999, that being gay is inappropriate and deserves death. Sadly, that seems to be continually portrayed about those times.

No Thrills
3 December 2022
How did this movie ever get labeled as a thriller? I must have fallen asleep during those thriller sequences. In other words, there are no thrilling parts, no suspenseful parts and not a mystery to be found. Unless you try to count the online event as the mystery. It is not a mystery but an unfortunate occurrence that anyone using the internet should be wise to. The movie is nothing more than a boring rendition of a Panamanian travelogue with some repulsive violence near the end.

If you're interested in seeing the lead, Matthew Leitch, in various states of undress or nakedness, then the movie does provide that. Otherwise, good luck at finding anything else in the movie that's worth the wasting of your time.

Midnight Mass (2021)
7/10
Good but...
2 December 2022
Midnight Mass was good but too long and drawn out. The series was 7, approx. 1 hour, episodes which could have been done in half that time or, perhaps even with the right people in charge, been made into a 2 hour movie. The essential elements are there for a good story but extended conversations and some unnecessary footage should have been cut out.

The first 3 episodes seem the most drawn out since not a lot happens. There is some mystery but not really a lot to keep you that interested. Episodes 4 thru 6 are better but unfortunately the last episode 7 was a bit disappointing. I wasn't unhappy with what happened in the end but how everything was portrayed. It seemed somewhat of a let down. It could have been shown much better, in a much more engaging, thrilling and ultimately emotionally satisfying way for the viewer.

Had Potential
4 July 2022
The Mini Series had potential if it had been cut to maybe a 2-3 hour movie focusing on the more dramatic aspects and following through with a much better ending. The dispiriting ending really does let the series down.

Episode 1 starts out being fairly mediocre. I had the feeling that I'd seen this before but with different characters, etc. It was only the episode 1 ending that gave me enough incentive to decide to watch episode 2.

Episode 2 was the best and seemed to be building up to some major revelations.

Episode 3 does show some revelations/developments, but they didn't inspire or thrill much. I'm not sure why except maybe everything was spread too thinly among too many topics.

I guess I like uplifting endings 'cuz I was disappointed.

So-So Movie
13 January 2022
The movie had promise at the beginning and as I was watching I thought of possible twists and turns here and there, but nothing really elaborate transpired. The movie stayed on a steady and predictable plot line with increasingly weak, subpar drama. No real thrills or suspense, just TV movie drama at best. Another reviewer called it a Shallow Thriller which is correct. No oomph.

Incomplete
24 October 2021
The movie has the makings for a very good film, but it felt drawn out and incomplete. The drawn-out story whimpered to a lackluster ending. The film should have been a short.

Watch It Again
4 October 2021
James Franco, deservedly, was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Actor. His portrayal of a mountain climber's survival experiences, while trapped by a rock, was riveting. Some have said that they found the film boring, but I was captivated by his performance and after finishing the movie, I felt like I wanted to re-watch it.

Anyone Squeamish?
4 October 2021
One of the most horrific films I've seen in a long time. It's a gruesome, chilling tale. If you're squeamish, I wouldn't recommend it. The first half can become tiresome with unlikable characters. Then, everything reconnects with unexpected brutality. Rating this film was difficult; so I opted for an average of 3 stars.

Bore, Bore, Bore
4 October 2021
What a ludicrous script! What poor and stupid choices made by virtually every member of the fraternity. Anyone with half a brain would not react to the various situations as the characters did in this movie and therefore, you develop absolutely no feeling for any of the them. So with all the non-suspenseful action and screaming-at-each-other dialogue, the movie becomes a bore.

Déception
2 October 2021
The movie is not good. I had thought that the movie might be a good story showing competition between skaters and mutual attractions, etc. But, instead, the film shows barely anything about skating, very little attractions between anyone except perhaps mother and son, and attractions that could have been interesting, if pursued, are briefly glossed over and go nowhere. Take your chances if you want to be bored. I would not recommend wasting time on this film.

One of the Best of the Gay Genre
2 October 2021
This is an excellent film thriller. Some people have posted that it is too long and/or boring. It is not. It is a mystery/thriller adapted from a novel with plot twists which I did not see coming. Has to be one of the best gay/bi-sexual films that I've ever seen due to the excellent storyline. I would highly recommend viewing.

Campy Fun
2 October 2021
I certainly understand the low ratings some have given the film, but I found it strange, quirky and so silly at times that I really liked it. It is definitely campy, and I thought many of the lines were quite funny. If you want a believable film, this one is not for you.

Goes Downhill :(
2 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The first 30 minutes are fairly intriguing. Then, the film becomes repetitive and boring somewhat repeating itself for the next 20 minutes or so. Following that, the film could have been very interesting with the storyline including more of the hunter and a re-appearance from Kate, the delivery person. Instead the movie returns to the earlier repetitiveness and turns to silliness with an ending that is not only disappointing but stupid.

Stepford Family meets Anti-Christ
2 October 2021
Alright, c'mon people. This movie is ridiculously bizarre...more like the Stepford family meets the Anti-Christ, Damien, or some other utter nonsense. Sure the characters displayed anger, hurt, pain, etc., but without any real feeling being transmitted to the audience. If the film had been directed as if the people were real with real feelings and real emotions being expressed, perhaps the viewer would have felt that and could care for the characters.

There's nothing terrifying or horrifying about the cool, detached world of the film as referenced in one critic review. Instead, a film devoid of emotion translates to the audience as boring and not entertaining. The same review stated that the film was designed to start conversations, to leave viewers startled and shaken. Well, if so, it's not due to any genius but rather to the absurd nature of the film. This film was not for me.

Superb Drama!
7 February 2021
Superb execution of a mini-series which was not too long and not too short. Each episode was thoroughly engaging with impressive performances by the cast, especially the lead roles played by Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant. Several twists and turns increase the intensity of the storyline in each episode.

Highly recommended entertainment for a crime/drama/mystery.

Could have been much better :-(
1 January 2021
The film could and should have been much better but poor character development made all the twists and turns meaningless since I never cared about any of the characters. Actually, there were too many twists and too much action.

The film should have been slowed down or extended with much more character development so the viewer could develop a sense of wanting the main characters to succeed and feel for the characters and their relationships to each other. Only the best action sequences and twists could have been used which would have made for a superb film.

Watch Three Days of the Condor or No Way Out (1987) instead which are far superior suspense thriller films.

Who Really Cares?
5 September 2020
The movie is average at best in terms of the story. It wasn't until about an hour into the movie that it started to become interesting and continued for the next 50 minutes or so. The ending, oh well, ho hum. No huge revealing plot twist or anything. The movie was well acted but overall had no real bite or thrilling suspense. The only thing I can say about the last bit of information revealed before the ending...so what! It's an okay movie to pass the time when you're really bored, but there's a reason that you've probably never heard of this movie before.

Bone-headed Co-pilot
12 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The movie starts off okay but shortly after hijackers appear, it becomes a really silly movie after the co-pilot, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, makes the bone-headed decision to communicate with the passengers (which also includes the hijackers). If this is standard protocol, then I guess, there's nothing like keeping the enemy informed of what's going on!

After that reassurance from the co-pilot to the passengers, the movie seemed too ridiculous and contrived. I couldn't suspend my disbelief enough to continue watching a co-pilot with no brains.

Superb Film!
9 February 2020
One of the best films that I've seen in a while and my favorite for the Oscars. The nearly 2 hour movie went by in no time. I didn't realize while watching that my emotions had become so heightened because by the end I had tears in my eyes. Was not expecting that. Would highly recommend!

Oscar contender???
9 February 2020
Well, I'm shocked by other people's perception that for some reason this is a great movie. It's okay...weird, strange, far-fetched, unusual, but not the best movie of 2020. Same goes for Jojo Rabbit.

I recently saw 1917 and it is by far superior and my favorite so far this year. Ford v Ferrari and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood were also quite good. Have not yet seen Joker, The Irishman, Little Women and Marriage Story, but will.
