Hold Your Breath: The Ice Dive (2022)
Fantastic
Really enjoyed this. Some of the cinematography was beautiful, and enjoyed the story telling. Also refreshing for a doc like this to be 40mins, often they're stretched out much longer. 40mins felt like a great length.
Only thing I didn't appreciate was the coverage of the record attempt. From my perspective at least there were some unnecessary long pauses to make you think that she might not make it to the next check point - I just didn't like that. Would have preferred to see the record attempt in real time without any edits or slow mo's. Just a camera above or view walking on the ice getting a feel for what it was like in real time and to take you into the experience, rather than the replay they give you. That's only my perspective, but otherwise thought it was fantastic!
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)
Absolutely no way this is a 12
Totally flabbergasted this is a 12. There is so so so so much violence.
I haven't seen many of the superhero movies the past couple of years so perhaps this is the trend now, but the level of violence in this movie shocked me - every few minutes there was violence. I'd be really horrified to think of a child watching this movie.
On top of that it's pretty graphic / gruesome in a number of places, I'd definitely say to extremely unnecessary levels - like isn't this movie partially aimed at the younger generation?
I get that you will always have a fight scene or two in these movies, but the level of violence felt totally unnecessary and didn't help serve the plot at all. Just shocks me to think this movie could pass as a 12, and would strongly advise anyone who can be sensitive to movies to really do their research before considering watching this one.
Ted Lasso (2020)
Love love love season 1 & 2, but not 3
If I met someone who hadn't seen any Ted Lasso yet I'd 100% tell them to watch it but to stop after season 2.
I LOVED the first two seasons - the humour, the American/UK parts, the football content, and the amazing way it made me care about the characters and the themes that were portrayed.
Sadly as much as I loved the first two seasons, I've been as equally disappointed by the third. I'm shocked to be saying this too after how much I was looking forward to season three.
It seems as the characters I cared so much about previously I now couldn't care less about. The show doesn't make me laugh out loud in the same way, and some of the character directions have been painful and feel like box ticking. I'm also shocked at the amount of airtime Keeley's business venture has been given! To be honest, I'd even go as far as saying I've been bored during the third year.
What a sad way to end a fantastic series.
The Morning Show (2019)
A tale of two seasons
I enjoyed season one and was intrigued by where it was going to go in season two.
Unfortunately it went downhill drastically and I gave up part way through season two. Some characters were suddenly nothing like how they behaved in season one with no explanation, and some of the storylines were painful. I had no care for the characters in season two and with each episode I felt like I was just trying to survive it by keeping watching. Definitely should have stopped at the end of season one.
It's very ironic season one focuses on telling the 'truth' and not agendas - then season two shows up and tries to preach a load of agendas at you.
Season one: 7.5/10
Season two: 2/10.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Disappointing
Felt very similar to lots of the other reviews on here - film was great visually but story was very tiresome.
It felt like they were trying to include as many movie cliches as possible- from annoying children persistently making bad decisions to a gunfight where someone dives out of the way thinking they are safe only to find out later they were hurt.
Unfortunately I just didn't care about the characters, not any of them. I found Jake's children mostly to be a little annoying as we constantly saw them disobey their dad's orders to create action in the movie. This happened multiple times. The bad guy wasn't great either, I just didn't feel any connection to the characters.
Also laughed when Jake and his family that made such a thing about being forest people were suddenly happy at the end to forgot the whole forest thing and call themselves water people.
I really enjoyed the first movie but this one wasn't much at all, and I don't plan on watching anymore of them after this showing.
The Umbrella Academy (2019)
First season not bad, second season not for me
Don't get me wrong, there were parts I really enjoyed. Number 5 was my favourite character throughout. But there were also parts that really frustrated me, and unfortunately there just seemed to be an ever increasing list of the latter. Perhaps if season 2 was cut to fewer episodes maybe there would have been more focus in the storyline.
The Old Guard (2020)
Not great
Cheesy in places, incredibly predictable and by the numbers, and agree with other reviews that the music selection was very strange and the songs felt totally out of place with the movie.
Shame as it had potential!
Line of Duty (2019)
Wow, it's really that bad
The first 5-10mins felt promising and then things went downhill, and downhill fast. I kept watching because I thought that surely it had to get better...and sadly it did not.
Dream Big: Engineering Our World (2017)
Disappointing
Some great footage in here but the pacing and editing felt kinda odd. Think they tried to cover too much rather than going into more detail on a smaller number of topics. You jump around lots of places and nothing felt linked together. Just didn't work for me.
Manifest (2018)
Hoped it would be so much more
Gave up after 4 or 5 episodes.
Great concept and was really excited to watch this but it didn't live up to expectations. I thought they missed a trick with the focus on the series but it was so heavily focused on life after the event rather than the actual airplane event that it became too slow moving for me. Couldn't stick with it any longer.
Blockers (2018)
Oh dear oh dear oh dear
Not good. Really not good.
Don't put yourself through it.
How the World Ends (2017)
'How the FILM ends...'
Didn't mind the film, but don't get me started on the ending. It made me regret ever sitting down to watch the film!
