I don't think I've ever been more scared by a movie
7 December 2020
I very much agree with the user who called this movie a "Surprisingly well done "Found Footage" flick". Yes, this movie is very low budget and the CGI-creature in the final frame detracts from my overall impression of this movie. But holy cow this movie scared the crap out of me! The suspense was just killing me and made me keep the lights on when I had to go to sleep. So even though the story was very simple the movie actually benefits from this because when we are given too much information about the monster/threat it is less scary. This movie is scary as hell so that's why I give it 7/10 even though the movie is more like a 5/10.

Unjustly criticized

This movie is really not bad! Sure it is somewhat cheesy and not too realistic. But I look at it as an 80s adventure film - a piece of escapism! It's romantic and admittedly, a bit cheesy. But the movie is entertaining from start to finish and even keeps you at the edge of your seat during the action sequences that are actually pretty good. Obviously, Brooke Shields was a very beautiful woman, just 17 in this movie, but I really don't think she deserves a razzie for worst actress. Overall, I think she did a good job. I think a lot of people just viewed her as a pretty face. But she is actually a good actress. Envy, I wonder?

It's actually pretty good.

Okay. Yeah, I warched this because I'm obsessed with Jennifer Connelly.

I didn't expect much from this but I was pleasantly surprised. The plot is easy to follow and understand. In my opinion this movie is well written. Even though the third act is not as good as the first hour os so.

I for one cared about the characters. I'm not just talking about Connelly even though she is just so sweet and lovely in this.

If you like a mystery with surreal tones and a minimalistic plot this is maybe you. And definitely if you are a fan of Jennifer Connelly.

Zulu (2013)

Decent, but rather cliché thriller
12 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I had never heard about this particular film when it appeared on television. Zulu is set in modern post-apartheid-South Africa and evolves about two main characters played by Forrest Whitaker and Orlando Bloom.

I guess this title never made it to theaters, not in my native country Denmark, at least. But star names like Whitaker and Bloom, I think give this movie the necessary attention in order to be exposed to a large audience. The movie it self is rather cliché with Bloom playing an alcoholic- divorced-and miserable detective who has massive problems in his private life but is quite capable in his profession. However, the movie raises above the typical TV-crime thriller not only in terms of stars in the leading roles, but in it's overall cinematic feel. Some scenes turn surprisingly violent and have a change of pace, as well.

However, the movie is not only rather cliché, but quite predictable, as well. There is a scene in which Whitaker's character decides to singlehandedly kill a bunch of criminals and knocks Bloom's character out because he will not let him self be stopped by Bloom's character. I one is familiar with your typical action thriller one can very easily predict that Bloom's character is soon going to appear later on and safe the character of Whitaker from a close call.

But overall, Zulu is a decent movie. Not much new here, but the movie is quite entertaining and delivers what one might expect from a second- rate piece of cinema.

Drive (I) (2011)

Aesthetics doesn't make up for lack of plot and characterization
9 November 2015
I know this has probably been said before over and over, but I don't really get all the hype about this movie.

Sure "Drive" has style and aesthetic qualities similar to that of music videos which many movies strife for. But the similarities to the music video is exactly my problem. A nice package does't make up for a, to me, not interesting plot and a main character so boring it's unbelievable. I'm a fan of Clint Eastwood who doesn't say much as a part of his usual portraition of characters but this is redeemed by character interaction which I think is lacking in "Drive". I don't care about the characters or their interaction and the plot never seemed really interesting.

I'm sorry that I cannot share the enthusiasm concerning the fact that Refn, my countryman, has directed this visually gorgeous picture. Unfortunately, I don't think the content in any way does the look and style of this film any justice.
