Chicken Nugget (2024– )
10/10
It's not for everybody.
16 March 2024
This show is for people who like to watch something different, something unique, something that goes over the top, and something that beyond imagination. It's also very cartoony, and you may find some of the absurd comedy unfunny because those are displayed in plain expression, and subtle. Also it's hard to predict what's going to happen next. If none of these things I have described so far is suitable for you, then don't watch this show. Don't even bother to try it. You will complain about the show without even finishing the whole episodes just like many people left negative reviews here. This show reminds me of the korean movies, The Quiet Family and Save the Green Planet. If you enjoyed those two movies (Castaway on the Moon can be included in the similar manner), you will definitely enjoy this show.

Very enjoyable live action adaptation for mature audience.
24 February 2024
I wasn't really sure about this show since I was pretty much disappointed by another netflix's live action adaptation, One Piece. Many people probably don't agree with me, but for me, one piece was very juvenile and cartoony - even the costumes in the show were cartoonish. It was just another animation with real people. Why bother making a live action adaptation if they aren't gonna apply a real life seriousness into it? I can't lie that kids did enjoy One piece a lot. The reason why I have "reviewed" One piece so far here is because Avatar: The Last Airbender is complete opposite. I could see a lot of seriousness and efforts all over the show including the costumes. CGI on the world building and fight scenes is quite seamless. Those effects of bending elements in the fight scenes are very convincing. The overall production is quiet impressive, and sure enough to entertain mature audience. This show can easily rank in top netflix shows of all time. It's hundred miles better than One piece, and million miles better than Shyamalan's Avatar. There are some cons of the show of course, and acting skills from some of the actors were questionable at some moments. If I have to pick one con of the show, Katara in the show is way, way off from the original animation character.

It's a cheesy and gory action flick that delivered what it was promising. What else do you expect? Life changing experience? Epiphany?
27 January 2024
When it comes to netflix produced movies, the quality of the movies often reach to lower than the movies released in the theaters just like those straight-to-DVD movies. Of course there are few exceptions, but because of the long list of the sub par movies that Netflix produced, I tend to lower my expectation, and that seems to work out well when I watch netflix movies such as Rebel Moon and this movie, Badland Hunters. It was nice to see something new and different in both movies. The action scenes in both movie are also superb that are worth watching again. However, I would give just a little bit more points on Badland Hunters since it has shorter running time, but has longer action time. It's slightly more than 90 minutes, but it has a lot more actions. It's a cheesy and gory action flick that delivered what it was promising. What else do you expect? Life changing experience? Epiphany? Watch for the actions especially last 30 minutes. You won't be disappointed.

Character driven thriller in a smaller scale
20 January 2024
First and most, I noticed that fans of the movie, Train to Busan has unhealthy expectation towards other works from the director, Mr. Yeon. Just like the fans are somehow unable to accept the movie, Peninsular as a standalone movie that was never meant to be a sequel of Train to Busan, they seem to be unable to accept other styles or genres of the shows that Mr. Yeon created. The different show has different story telling. Train to Busan, Hellbound, and Jung E are all different shows, and arguably they all succeeded in their own good storytelling. This show, The Bequeathed also has its own style of story telling, and I haven't found something that lacks so much to be a bad show. It's definitely better than another netflix show, Fool Me Once with a cheesy ending that I've seen multiple times from other movies and tv shows. That was the part I was also worried while I was watching this show, but luckily and surprisingly there was an unexpected turn. The incidents that are driven by the characters are so natural, and that is the highest point of this show. If I need to pick some negative aspects of the show, then it would be the scale which is very small. It's not a world problem, or a danger to a society. It's basically a family squabble which makes me think that this shows meant to be a movie, but split into 6 episodes. Anyway, with this kind of pacing, storytellng, and character development. I'm confident that upcoming netflix show from mr. Yeon, Parasyte: The Grey will be good.

Archie (2023)
2/10
True story based on Jennifer Grant's.
17 December 2023
First and most, they, I mean the production, shouldn't have mentioned the show is based on true story with a deep research in the beginning. As many reviews already stated that there are many factual errors in the show, it's hard to understand why they even bothered to include "deep research" in that sentence. Second, constant pop up of the title, "Archie" while watching the show is just too much. The only positive way to analyse this is that they wanted to remind us that he's Archie. To understand the show with a very short span of Cary Grant's history with factual errors again positively is that the show is purely based on Gary Grant's daughter Jennifer Grant's memory of her father. I mean how many of us have a good memory of our own fathers' lives? I definitely have a zero idea of his personal life when he was younger especially before his marriage.

The Killer (2023)

People are angry because this is not another John Wick film
3 December 2023
People were expecting to see just another mind-numbing John Wick action film with never ending gun shots and bloody knife fights, but instead, the killer was starting to talk, and talk endlessly. He's was supposed to fight, not talk, right? Where is explosion? This is boring. What is this? There's something seriously wrong about this movie, right? There's nothing wrong about this movie, The Killer. It's actually almost perfect. The story telling and the pacing is very well done. The editing is top notch just as good as Fight Club - I'm not gonna lie Fight Club is still a better movie. Michael Fassbender's acting is just cherry on top. There aren't many good movies nowadays especially on netflix, but this is definitely good one. .

Ahsoka: Part One: Master and Apprentice (2023)
Season 1, Episode 1
1/10
Writing is really bad on this one.
20 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
If you need to know how NOT to write a bad script of a show, this episode has it all.

1. No originality - the beginning of the episode is straight copy from Indiana Jones and Star Trek. The chase scene with Sabine Wren is almost identical with the scene in Star Trek where little Kirk stealing a corvette. Also the general story of the episode is a recycle of the stories that have been recycled in other Star Wars stories over and over. You'll experience endless dejavu moments from the beginning to the end of this episode.

2. Breaking a common sense in order to make the plot happen - the so called map is locked, and to unlock the map, you need a key. The key, however, is not a physical key, but just need to solve a simple puzzle which turns out to be easier than solving rubric cubes. The intelligent side kick robot was unable to unlock the map even though it can trace back the light saver that's more than 500 years old.

AI could write a show much better than this.

90 minute music video.
6 October 2023
This movie is like a music video that runs just a little bit more than 90 minutes. The lights, the cinematography, and the choreography of the fights are very much like scenes from a music video with an uptempo song or music which may be the reason why they didn't make this movie longer? Not sure if the budget of this movie also took a big role, but it seems that In order to reduce drag moments, they simplified and shortened the plot of the movie. That is the only problem for me if I have to make a complain about this movie. This movie is just too short. The movies with 90 minute running time are common before, but these days we are quiet used to the movies with a minimum of 2 hour running time. Nonetheless, it was a quiet entertaining movie. The choreography of the fights are really good. I didn't feel any excessive and unnecessary movements laid. Both male and female lead actors did a great job too, however, I'll give more points to the male lead. His acting and facial expression were brilliantly done.

The Worst of Evil (2023– )

This isn't just another typical double spy escapade.
5 October 2023
I didn't intend to leave a review, but after seeing the title of a review "Been there, done that", it's hard to not write a review about the show since that's not all about this show. Based on the review and the date the review was published, I can tell the reviewer only have watched the first episode only, or the half of the second episode at most. The show's trailer and the first 2 episodes did come off as a typical double spy escapade. I also didn't expect anything new. However, the plot gets more complicated and fresh from the 3rd episode. The episode 4 and 5 are even better. 2 hours have just gone so fast. This isn't just a tug of war kind of show where a guy tries to hide his identity, and another guy tries to reveal a rat. It's not that simple, and the plot is more 3 dimensionally interwoven with other characters which is the fresh take of the genre indeed. It's probably better to judge the show after watching the whole episodes, but so far so good. It's hard to find the flaws yet. It's also nice to see that the production of the show expressed homage towards late 80s and early 90 hong kong noir during episode 4 and 5. Don't get discouraged by the common theme of this show. Give it a try. I guarantee you'll notice a fresh breath of air.

Cheap goregasm superpowers
4 October 2023
This show simply has no substance. It's all about the fights between superhumans, and that often lead to violent and gory outcomes which admittedly how The Boys gained a lot of viewers who were hungry for mature superhero actions since Deadpool. However, The Boys has a story. The story at some point compels the audience such as "how could regular people even try to fight against satanic super humans with superpowers?". Gen V has no story. It's all about how characters with their own unique superpowers interact each other, fight each other, and rip apart each other. If there's some kind of direction in the show, it would at least give some motivation to continue watching the show, but if the main presentation of this show is people being blown up, so I'll just wait for a compilation video that someone would probably upload on youtube in the future.

Remake of Unagi, 1997
2 October 2023
This movie is very similar to Unagi (the eel), 1997 which also starred Yakusho Koji. The tone, pacing, and the story, all the components are very close to the style of Imamura Shohei. It's like a remake or a reboot with the same actor. After watching this movie, 2 questions popped up in my mind. First, why people think this is a good movie? I mean, it's not a bad movie, but it's a repeat, nothing new which doesn't make it good. I assume modern audience has a lack of knowledge of Unagi and Imamura Shohei's moivies? Second, I was surprised to see that this movie was submitted as an Oscar nominee instead of Koreeda's new movie, Monster. Sure, Yakusho Koji is a national movie star in japan just like Harrison Ford in Hollywood, but still Koreeda's Monster has more compelling story, and simply is miles better than this movie. Oscar has lost its credit than ever, and one of the reasons is probably the modern audience.

13 Assassins (2010)

Brilliant until the final showdown which lacks common sense
6 September 2023
Finally, the physical copy of this movie handed to me, and I was able to watch it with a little bit of excitement. As the movie progressed, It was a top notch experience. The cinematography, the costumes, and the actors, all of the components work together brilliantly. Although there were a lot of gruesome moments, but it was hard to move away from the scenes since they were aesthetically laid out. The movie was by any means perfect so far. This is it. "This IS the movie". I was giving 20 out 10 right before I got to see the final showdown of the movie which unfortunately was a HUGE letdown. I'm not being picky here. It's like a beautiful painting that is almost perfect, but there is a noticeable smudge or flaw at some part of the painting that anyone can't help but notice. There's some tiny part with CGI in the final battle, and it only lasts a couple of minutes, but still it made me keep saying "why?". The quality of CGI is that bad. The biggest problem is it's lost "Common Sense" in the final battle. The simple logic and the common sense all flushed down instantly. If it started without a common sense, then it wouldn't have been a problem like the movie, 300, but 13 assassins is far different from 300, and has more serious and realistic aspect. I'm not a big fan of Takashi Miike's, but I do watch if a show or a movie has his name on it. Last one was a kdrama CONNECT from disney plus. His movies sure have intentional goofs here and there especially with Ichi the killer. I could notice it from Connect too, but those were easily ignorable. However, loosing the common sense and breaking the movie is hard to ignore. Very disappointed 6.5 our 10.

Power rangers of the caribbean - A show made for kids
2 September 2023
I'm not saying that this show is bad what-so-ever. Though I felt it from the very first episode, after watching 3 episodes, I came to the conclusion that this show is not for adults. I know this is a live adaption of everlasting manga anime, One Piece, but I noticed that the set, costumes, acting(not, actors), fights, and CGI are definitely aimed at younger, much younger audience. It's not for picky adults. If you are not convinced, compare this show with Pirates of Caribbeans 1, 2 and 3. I'm talking about the overall quality. For me, a live adaptation of Cowboy Bebop is miles better than this show. This comes from a big fan of Cowboy Bebop anime. Again, this isn't a bad show. Kids sure enjoy the show. 10 for kids and 1 for adults. 5/10 overall.

Mask Girl (2023– )

Starts as something special, but ends as something stale 6.5/10
19 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I basically didn't know anything about the show. I only watched it because it was popped up in my notification when I opened netflix. I don't watch a lot of kdrama, but from the first episode, this show came off as not another usual kdrama. It was very unique. The first and the second episode are very interesting and intriguing. The show's theme appeared to be the social commentary of lookim in south korea which also gave the opportunity to hire right actors for the show instead of typical handsome and beautiful actors in usual kdramas. I was giving 11 out of 10 so far. However, the premise that I was assuming fell through very quickly after the second episode. From the third episode, the show became a "typical" korean revenge drama. It was quite disappointing since the tone of the show was completely changed early. It could have been nicer if they have maintained the uniqueness to the end, but they seemed to have run into the common moral dilemma such as "there will be consequences". I've seen some korean dramas and movies that start strongly, but end generically. For obvious reasons, those shows never get picked up by many.

It has brotherhood, bloody fight, and mukbang. It's a banger.
9 June 2023
The show is not as simple as you've seen it from the trailer. It has a little bit more complicated stories and characters, but not too far off. It has brotherhood, bloody fight, mukbang, and above all, it's a fast pace show. The choreography of the fights in this show is also well done. It's just as good as another korean show from Netflix, My name. The martial arts or fight actions scenes in modern korean movies and tv shows are arguably better than any other action movies whether it's from hollywood, or outside of hollywood. They has more realistic fights. It's fast and furious literally. They don't have those showy exaggerated moves that look like choreographed dance. Unfortunately, this show also has those typical cliche moments like My Name especially those tear-jerky ones. That's my biggest pet peeve in korean tv shows and movies. Although there's a sudden change of pace (It was quite a ride until episode 6), and the ending is a bit rushed and shortened, overall, the show is quiet entertaining. The fight scenes are worth visit more than once. I give solid 7.5/10.

Wasted a great concept and great talents.
15 April 2023
Finally, something's happening as season 5 starts. Before then, there has been nothing happened during season, 2, 3, and 4. There has been no progress of how Mrs. Maisel working up to be a bigger comedian. There are only unresolved incidents and characters during these past 3 seasons, and some of those aren't even related to Mrs. Maisel. It's hard to understand why they didn't mainly focus on Mr. Maisel even though each season has only 8 episodes. I do like side characters like parents and in-laws, but again they spent way too much time on them especially the father, Abe in a very short span of each season.

They could have adopted some of the Lucille Ball's stories. Mrs Maisel would have worked on radio programs first like Lucille Ball, and then being featured on TV shows, and then taking movie roles, but in this show, even radio comedy programs aren't existed. I really liked the show's concept and love the nostalgia since I like to watch classic comedy shows. I still do enjoy the show, but makes me unsatisfied because the turn of the events has been going no where. They wasted such a good potential.

Beef (2023– )

A+ writing with full of unexpected events, a total fresh content
10 April 2023
I have reviewed the movie, Everything Everywhere All at Once as an over hyped & over rated movie riding on a social trend. It's simply because the movie's a rehash of popular movies and TV shows from Jet Li's One to Rick & Morty. As a fan of A24, Everything Everywhere All at Once was a huge let down. Beef, on the other hand, is a complete fresh content from the start. It's like reading a novel or a comic book, and get surprised every time you turn to the next chapter. The writing is the best part of this show. The plot of the show isn't something you haven't experienced before, but when it transitions into another event, it connects to something you can least expect. This can be a stream of conscious narrated in a brilliant way. Judging from how it ends, I don't think there will be another season (who knows?) but definitely would watch the show again.

Just another cliche train.
25 March 2023
I wasn't interested in watching this movie because I knew what I'm going to get, but my friend told me that we've watched Chapter 3, and we've come this far, so we might as well just watch chapter 4. The result was just as I expected. It was just the same as Bullet train and other movies produced from the same production. Just another typical villains and typical fight scenes over and over. This John Wick production team or "franchise" has transitioned into a new Fast and Furious franchise making the same movies again and again by replacing cars and gimmicks. If they pivot and make some turns to adapt new ingredients that we've tasted from the first John Wick movie, then it would be still enjoyable, but it's too late to stop this "cliche train" starting from John Wick chapter 3, Nobody, Bullet Train, Violent night, and this John Wick: Chapter 4. I don't think this franchise will die any time soon. They are probably working another movies in John Wick universe right now.

Hoodlum gets a reward, AGAIN
2 March 2023
It makes me want to write a review, every time I get to encounter an episode that shows "the time" while I've been watching the Andy Griffith show. Misogyny? A harsh punishment to a child? Well, those are the days. I can swallow that easy. Besides, I could see the reviews sharing my thoughts on those episodes too, so why bother? However, after going through 3 and a half seasons, it finally came to my turn. Come on, what the heck, how could they reward a hoodlum with a good cloth and a woman even though he's a menace to a society? Smashing the windows with a rock and crushing other man's skull with a base are nothing serious? Funny thing is that Ernest gets what he wants at the end in other episodes too, well mostly. People sure took matter lightly in the past, but that doesn't mean they just ignore the crimes. It's wrong then, it's wrong now. The worst episode of the Andy Griffith show so far.

Euphoria (2019– )

The show is brilliant as long as it's not focusing on Rue.
24 February 2023
The show was immensely popular, so I decided to give it a go. However after watching first 7 minutes of the very first episode, I gave up. It looked like a show about an addict going through her pitiful life. Haven't we seen this thousand times? An addict stealing money to buy drugs, and then crying for help, and then hurting friends and family again. I felt like I've watched the show already. But then I was told that the main story of Euphoria isn't really about her, Rue. It's more about the characters around Rue which made me watch the show again. It was indeed true. It was brilliant. Its style is amazing and the pace is a top notch. That's how the first season ended, wow. But then here comes season 2 bringing something I was worried about; focusing on Rue. 70% of season 2 is about Rue, a typical story about a drug addict. Who wants to see that unless you are a fan of Zendaya? Season 2 was a real bore fest. It's really pity that the production of the second season contradicted the promises the first season made.

Comparing to PARASITE, yes this movie is indeed overly hyped and rated
14 February 2023
People usually say, "overhyped" or "overrated" if a movie doesn't live up to a fame. Sometimes it's agreeable, but oftentimes it's hard to agree with them because many claims with baseless information like the one with Titanic. How many people can really agree with someone saying "Titanic is overrated"? Well, today I'll make a point of why Everything Everywhere All at Once is overrated with a nutshell information by comparing with the move, Parasite. When Parasite was getting popular in US, I was thinking, "it's probably because it's leveraged by a social trend". However, "Boy, was I wrong" that's what I said right after watching the movie. I could understand why it gained so much popularity. The movie is well scripted and well directed, but most of all, it's a movie that nobody has ever seen before which is probably why the movie received a big applauds and awards at Cannes and others. It's understandable completely that Parasite is definitely not overrated. However, in case of Everything Everywhere All at Once, it's also well scripted and well directed, but the plot and EVERYTHING in this movie is something I've seen in many movies and TV shows over and over especially with multiverse and the family dynamics. There's ZERO wonder why it didn't get any attention from Cannes, and the movie is basically unknown in other countries except US. The movie's fame is only leveraged by the social trend only in US. I can expect this movie will grab a lot of Oscars, and also can expect this movie will easily be forgotten unlike Parasite.

*Keep in mind that I'm not a diehard fan of Parasite. I do like the movie, but I'm only using it because it makes a good comparison with Everything Everywhere All at Once especially with Cannes award.

As real as a real life
1 February 2023
The plot has a familiar theme we've seen in the Hollywood movies and TV shows for a long time, but it's very well integrated into a aging rural society in japan which is the highest selling point here. I've seen a video from a japanese youtuber showing his experience of moving to a remote town in japan. At first those outsiders were welcomed, but soon after they found out that they had to follow so many of town's own rules, and they were being monitored. If they broke one of the rules, somebody in town would correct them. They couldn't bear those things any more, and eventually moved out of the town after living for a couple of years. This is a real thing happened and happening right now. So it's very interesting to see this show after hearing about what's really happening in japan. I've seen a fair share of Jdramas, and never seen a Jdrama like this. It's very unusual Jdrama and a great one at that. The only downside - though it's critical - is SFX. The CGI is really bad. It's below average especially with animals. It's probably related to budget, but still I can't understand why they adapted such a disappointing quality of CGI which distracts a lot from viewing experience. Other than that, being thirst for a new episode every week.

The Last of Us: Long, Long Time (2023)
Season 1, Episode 3
10/10
Beautifully done
30 January 2023
In the original video game, it was implied that Bill and Frank were gay in a relationship. That made a huge impact in the video game industry since there weren't any gay characters in the video games until then. However, keep in mind that it was a subtle representation. There were only a couple of moments hinting at they were gay. I gotta say, It's a good time to live in era where you can see a gay couple in a major tv show representing themselves as a loving and devoting couple just like a straight couple. The story is different from the original, and I had some doubts toward Nick Offerman, but Nick Offerman's acting was outstanding and quiet emotional, and overall, it's beautifully edited. Well done.

The Last of Us (2023– )
The cast is abysmal
26 January 2023
First, I really like the original game, Last of us, and I do think that the game is one of the best video games of all time. I mean, how often do you get to see and play a video game that makes you cry your eyes out? The amazing thing about this show is that the production value is superb. It's as great as any blockbuster movies. The quality of SFX and CGI is truly amazing. However, my problem with the show is the cast. The cast is abysmal, and I'm not only talking about the resemblance of the original characters. 2 episodes in, it's still hard to engage to the characters. Tess is much older and not as powerful as the original. I know she is not a main character, but still she's an important character. The problem with Joel in the show is that it doesn't have the special transition of how Joel transforms from rough and tough angry bear to daddy bear. Pedro Pascal looks like a kind and protective daddy bear already. Last but not least, Ellie is the worst of all. I'm really sorry to say this, but there's a big problem with her acting. Her facial expressions depending on the emotions, they look all the same. Whether she's anxious, angry or happy. There's no distinction among them. Ellie in the video game shows much diverse facial expressions. Funny and interesting thing is that clickers in the show look so much scarier and realistic than the ones in the game. I might continue watching the show just for the clickers, but I think the 3rd episode will be my last since I know who plays Bill in the show. I don't think they ruin it by any means. This isn't a bad show, but if I didn't know about the original game at all, I would probably enjoyed a lot except Ellie.

10 out of 10 just for the action sequences.
22 January 2023
This was a pleasant surprise. I didn't really expect much of it after watching the trailer, but the actual movie has so much more than the trailer which literally shows first few minutes of the beginning of the movie. I assume they didn't want to show much in the trailer since the movie has simple plot and shorter running time. As the subject states, the best thing about this movie is those excellent action sequences. It doesn't show a lot but I didn't feel short either. The fight scenes are very well choreographed with seamless CGI. This is coming from a person who's been watching cyberpunk movies and anime since the blade runner. I could notice that the director didn't shy away from adding some homage moments for the movie, Ghost in the Shell. It's not a perfect movie by any means. There are some sappy and cheesy moments which seem to be cliche in korean movies. The biggest downside for me was the movie was too short. They designed awesome androids and robots, but they somehow don't give a longer screen time for them. I think that's a crime. Hopefully there's a sequel without the korean movie cliche.
