Failing to takeoff so far
27 January 2024
The set pieces and cinematography are amazing. However....

Apple still hasn't learned that we live in a binge over the weekend, show me now age. This isn't 1997. Stop releasing new material week by week, expecting to hold the collective audience's interest. Back then that was the norm and people dealt with it. Now? If you're gonna do that; you better come up with something so tantalizing and gripping that the audience will come back from more.

This show already started out on an uphill climb being compared to BoB and The Pacific. But then to have two 1 hour long episodes that explained virtually nothing and developed no one, makes it really difficult to wait week after week to have things flesh out.

So far it's just utterly disjointed. You have no care for what happens to anyone because you haven't a clue who anyone is. You don't know what they're fighting for or why. Every song, phrase and gesture is a total trope from the 40s and there's just nothing original or dynamic here.

BoB took the time to explain who each character was why you should love them why you should hate them, here's where we're fighting and why.

The Pacific spent a little less time explaining characters but still took the time to explain the where and why we're fighting and dare I say did a better job than BoB of not romanticizing war.

Masters of the Air does neither. The plot meanders, the characters are just there, and it's literally just going from scene to scene showing war stuff.

We obviously can't hold total judgment until the end. But so far this is totally underwhelming and Apple ain't doing itself any favors holding this show hostage with an antiquated release method.

"I want them to see what they did to my boy"
31 January 2022
First I'll say that this was a fantastic series and an important story that needed to be told. The set pieces were top notch, as with the cinematography, actors/actresses and particularly the wardrobe. I noticed they re-created exactly what Bradley was wearing the day she viewed her son's body.

Now with that, I have one major gripe with this series. Bradley was courageous enough to allow the world to see what those men did. It was shocking to the senses I'm sure. I feel that this series was far too cautious with it. I get trying to toe the line of not being exploitive and gory. But people NEED to see this. And not in two second bursts. Bradley wanted people to see what those men did and glazing over it isn't going to change what happened.

Same goes for the actual assault. They skipped right over it. Why?

Again, good series, but sometimes you gotta just show the whole truth, not just the outcome.

Would be better as a tv series, mostly just fan service free of plot.
20 November 2021
Let's start with the good. Podcast and Phoebe are fantastic actors and I really enjoyed their characters. Carrie Moon and Paul Rudd hold up the rear as good secondary characters. The Easter eggs throughout were fun to keep an eye out for too.

Now for the bad. First and foremost, Ghostbusters just doesn't feel right outside of New York City. Watching Ecto-1 tear down a cornfield isn't quite the same as seeing it careen through the streets of Manhattan. Next, I could be wrong but Ghostbusters 2 does not seem to be apart of this movie's timeline. If it is, they went the entire runtime without making one single reference to it. In turn, this movie leaned on GB1's existence so hard that it couldn't flesh out its own story. Not just bringing back old villains, but at some points having them say and do the exact same things they did in the original! At one point they literally just did a certain scene all over again. If you gave GB2 grief for following the same formula as the original then you likely should haaaate this movie because it didn't even just re-do the same formula, it quite literally copy and pasted most of the key elements including the score.

I wasn't too keen on the whole "Stranger Things meets Goonies meets Ghostbusters" theme and my skepticism proved correct after seeing this. Ghostbusters was an adult subject that HAD to be played by adults in order for it to work. Having kids be GBs creates too many unnecessary problems that adults don't have to deal with. Which is why this movie would work better as a series. You have more time and room to work around obstacles that kids would face rather than forcing them through a problem to fit into movie runtime.

Lastly, Ghostbusters 1 and 2 had a tone. While they're largely considered comedies, most true fans definitely picked up on Dan Aykroyd's very real preoccupation with the supernatural. And his attention to detail with regard to telling a story about fighting ghosts, showed through the slapstick humor a-la Venkman's constant one liners. This movie absolutely fails at that. It's not dark, it's not very serious and it's most definitely built with attracting kids in mind. Plus aside from all the fan service "gimmies", this movie has next to no plot at all. They revisit the whole Gozer plot somehow managing to not really explain anything about its inception. The jail scene in GB1 explained more than what was said in this entire movie.

All in all it was a valiant effort on Jason Reitman's part to try and bring this back but too much time has gone by. And the theme and tone he ended up with in this movie just doesn't fit the original Ghostbusters vibe. Such a wasted opportunity. But I commend him for trying to do the fans a service after that train wreck in 2016. That said, as a true Ghostbusters fan who's been diehard my entire life, I could quite literally never watch this movie again and not even care.

Beckett (2021)
2/10
Weak motive and an even weaker storyline
13 August 2021
So the first thing wrong with this movie is it's introduction of characters. To start, we don't know who is who, why they're in Greece to begin with and the murkiness only builds from there. People come and go. Some prove to be allies, others don't. Some things get answered along the way. But as you learn more and little pieces, the only question you keep coming back to is why are they chasing this guy Beckett so hard?! It would have been far easier to just let him go back to the US and he would have been none the wiser to what was really going on. It was only them chasing him so incessantly that put him on the path to figuring out the motive. Which was incredibly weak at best.

In conclusion, stupid plot. Stupid motive. And same ol' paint by numbers bad guy pursuit movies. Random bad guys can traverse all across the town, city, state and country with ease, finding who they're looking for, on the absolute slightest of leads, eventually bad guys lose. What was it all for? Still don't really know. And then it just kinda ends. Waste of time.

Aftermath (IV) (2021)

Save your time and read WHY this movie is bad.
5 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I don't usually write spoiler reviews, but I'm seriously doing this so you don't waste your time like I just did.

The one good thing I'll say is the acting while predictable and cringe at times, wasn't that bad. There were more than couple times where Natalie said or reacted in such a way where I thought "man I felt that".

Now for the bad... To echo what most others have already said, it's the same ol' same ol. Start off like some supernatural entity is causing a disturbance only to find out, nah it's just a plain old human, being weird for an unexplained reason.

Secondly, while the movie was still pretending to be an act of the paranormal, Natalie's sister is "taken" and aside from a fake text that we later learn is clearly from the weird dude in the basement, her disappearance is a complete afterthought. The movie ends a month later, and no one seems to find it odd that Dani has not been seen or heard of since the events occurred.

Then there's the typical detective who instead of doing any actual police work, spends all of his time low key accusing the victim of being crazy or a suspect. Any real law enforcement officer would have found that hiding spot, the first time they reported the house being broken into or very soon after.

This weird dude who hasn't bathed in Lord knows how long, apparently doesn't reek of body order or our main characters have lost their ability to smell. He's also incapable of leaving any trace of dirt in this mostly WHITE clean house.

Once it started coming together that all the weird stuff was an act of a human and not some malevolent spirit, you get overwhelmed with how ridiculous everything is.

Like the motive for this dude to start messing with Natalie to begin with. The origin of the original owners is never fully explained either. Like why nobody noticed or cared that this Otto guy was missing. A house with two homicide victims, isn't combed through from the ground up? Not even when it's being sold? How a malnourished, smelly man with no human contact could somehow be so savvy he evaded any and all camera footage, leaves absolutely no trace of his being around by smell or even dirt. And could move about in such a manner where you can only assume he's not human? What did he eat in the entire time that house couldn't get sold? I could go on and on. But you get the point.

It was all just dumb.

How many '94 era songs can we cram into this?
2 July 2021
About a half hour into this disjointed mess and there's legit more 90's music at every turn than there is dialogue. Literally every single scene starts and/or ends with some song from the era and if it's not that, the rare time they actually are talking about something, it's being drowned out with more music.

I wanted to like this, but I'm over all this wannabe Stranger Things fad. That's all this is.

Dull, not scary at all, nonsensical plot
4 June 2021
What I liked about the original movie is that while they relied on the jump scare a lot, they used it to near perfection. Whereas here, it was a total crutch. Each scene that had one, you could see how the entire scene was set up just to accommodate it. I thought it was gonna be more of an "Exorcism of Emily Rose" type of courtroom drama which would have been an interesting shift in platform, but that part of the story (the part sold to you in the previews) is almost non existent.

To me, this franchise clearly has run out of ideas and running solely off popularity. Between this one and "The Nun" I don't see this series recovering from its downward spiral.

Coming 2 America IN NAME ONLY
5 March 2021
I could kinda tell by the previews that this movie wasn't going to live up to it's predecessor. Being that the original was one of the greatest comedies of all time, I honestly didn't expect it to anyhow.

Even though the original was a comedy, there was a level of seriousness to it, with good story telling, whereas this movie is just goofy. It's like a long SNL skit spoof about Coming to America. Even the original characters don't seem like their old selves. I'm currently an hour in and still not quite sure what the point is. It's just one disjointed scene after another. I tried, but no. It's trash.

Intriguing but rather shallow
13 February 2021
So let's start with the good. The cinematography and period setting is top notch and really puts you in the era. The acting is very good and helps with holding together a porous story.

Now for the bad. I really really wanted to love this movie. But...If you're looking for a biopic of Fred Hampton, this ain't it. Plain and simple. If you're looking for a movie that tells you more than you already knew about an understated important figure in black history, again this ain't it.

What you will get is a movie about an FBI informant who's motives are questionable at best, that happens to have Fred Hampton featured in it. If you're not versed in the names of people in Hampton's inner circle, you will be confused and have a hard time remembering who's who, as characters come and go constantly, with virtually no character development.

The movie is entertaining for the most part as the acting is quite good. But the story itself is all over the place and some scenes are longer than they need to be. You won't know much more about the great Fred Hampton, than you did before you watched this movie. It's too bad because I was waiting for this one.

People will trip over themselves to give this positive marks, but as a student of history and someone who loves a good drama in a period piece, this movie missed a great opportunity for sure.

Refreshing and hilarious!!
8 March 2020
I never heard of Taylor and man was she funny. like legit "lol" funny. She didn't use her set to make political or feminist statements and not one time did she set up a joke for the sole purpose of getting a pat on the back. Nearly everything she said was something you could totally relate to and if you couldn't, she has a charm about her that makes her stories fun even if it's something you haven't personally experienced. And even at 25, she has this hilarious cynicism about people her own age that just cracks you up but also makes you wonder how someone so young could be so self aware too.

She was refreshing in the sense that her set wasn't this hour long female empowerment session and hilarious in the sense where everything about her made you laugh; from her jokes, her expressions and movements. If you have an hour, check this out. It's definitely time well spent. Taylor is an absolute breath of fresh air to stand up comedy.

Who Killed Malcolm X? (2019–2020)
9/10
Interesting
8 February 2020
This was a well put together documentary for those versed on the subject and those looking to learn more about this important point in history. It's informative, well paced and sticks to the "need to know" rather than being chocked full of filler. What I didn't enjoy (by no fault at all of the makers of this documentary) is all the dodging, shoulder shrugging and flat out excuse making for Malcolm's true assailant. Two innocent men did a combined 40+ years of prison time for a crime they didn't commit, and everybody and I mean EVERYBODY from a senator to the random person on the street basically said "so what" when confronted about who the actual killer was. It was truly infuriating to see so many people be so indifferent about someone committing such a heinous crime and never having to pay the price for it.

As infuriating as all that was, I did still really enjoy this documentary. I'm a student of history so this was right up my alley. If you have a few hours to spare, give it a look. It's definitely time well spent.

It's alright
23 December 2019
Love me some Lil' Rel and I dropped everything to watch this when I saw it was available. He has the type of humor that I have with my friends when just hanging out.

I also have to give him A LOT of respect for having an HBO Special in Crenshaw, making it available to fans in the inner city. But why they decided to record the special in a gym instead of an auditorium is beyond me. The setting was distracting with the crowd constantly in the shot and they had to adjust the lighting in the gym midway through to address the setting sun. It just seemed really amateurish.

But for the show itself, there certainly were some parts that made me laugh out loud, but it was more to the silliness of what was being said, rather than laughing at the punchline of a bonafide, clever joke. If you're familiar with Lil Rel's comedy, then you know he's notorious for laughing at his own jokes. And there's nothing wrong with that at all and he has an infectious laugh for sure. But it's awwwwwwkward when he's laughing at stuff the crowd didn't find all that funny or laughing before he really gets the joke out.

Some of the "characters" he used in this special were really just recycled characters from other specials just with different titles. In other words, it was just a mechanism to re-hash the better parts of other routines he's done. Fine for someone who's never seen his material before, but they were much better executed in the past than done here.

One of my pet peeves with comedians is when they dwell on a joke too long ex. Telling a story and within that story, repeating a word phrase or sound over and over again. He did that a few times and it was just like ok man move on.

Lil Rel is hilarious, and he's got a lot of funny material out there, but for this being an HBO Special, this was horribly directed. And I dunno if maybe he had a bit too much to drink, but at times he either couldn't seem to focus or remember what he was trying to say, making the entire thing come off as disjointed.

Gave it a 5 for the genuine laugh out loud moments. They're definitely there and make this special worth it if you're bored and have some free time.

Solid but not without its flaws
14 December 2019
This movie tackles the complexity of divorce without pulling any punches. Where this move excels is it's raw approach to the ugliness of separation and how even the most genuinely kind people can turn into the worst version of themselves all for the sake of a "win". Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson deliver strong, believable performances of a married couple who became a union for their own selfish reasons but likely had no business even dating letting alone getting married.

Where this movie tends to fail however, despite it's title, is in the actual story. There's just no real direction or goal to what goes on here. Nicole, (Johansson's character) does a brief overview of what brought them together and broke them up. But the true lynchpin of what destroyed them, is for whatever reason a bit of an afterthought, only mentioned sparingly throughout the film. At times they seem like they're on the verge of saying "let's just make this work" only to wipe it all away with something truly awful said or done.

Once you kinda know where this story is headed which is fairly early into the second act, while intriguing, you're kinda just waiting to see how it'll all play out and it begins to drag. Some scenes are either needlessly elongated or completely unnecessary altogether. I do however absolutely love the "real life" comedy that happens. They did really well with making funny moments seem natural.

The strength and weakness of this movie is in its realness. Our lives are real and art tries like hell to imitate it, only to realize not every waking moment of it is even remotely entertaining. This movie seems to wallow in these moments of realness that don't happen to necessarily be entertaining and it's where this movie sags.

I enjoyed Marriage Story thoroughly and after seeing this and finally seeing "Her", I've grown a full blown new respect for Scarlett Johansson's acting prowess. But this movie lacks a true point and seems to only hinge itself on something (married or not) we all know too well; the pain of separating from someone you once immensely cared about. It relates greatly enough to pull you in for the duration, but upon reflection, you realize it's not as great as it seems. Seems to be more anguish for the sake of anguish, rather than anguish to illustrate a point. Don't get me wrong, there are revelations to be had, but without a true direction in this movie, you're kind left wondering what the point of it all even was, especially factoring in the "ending". If you can call it that.

Tiffany Haddish: Black Mitzvah (2019 TV Special)
1/10
So overrated
9 December 2019
I've never understood the hype around Tiffany Haddish. I've seen her in acting capacities and to me, she seems to play the exact same character in everything. Never saw any of her stand up routines so I gave this one a try. And one thing I noticed was that just like Iliza Shlesinger's newest special, she's performing to a crowd of pandering seals waiting at the ready to clap and bark at literally everything she says. For example she said "I bought a microscope" and the crowd actually whooped and hollered at it. She even had to tell the crowd to sit down because for whatever reason after an opening standing ovation they just....kept standing?

She didn't seem to be telling jokes. She was basically just talking AT the audience about the most random things. Everything she said seemed to be going for applause rather than laughs. Even to the point where she kept pausing, expecting a round of clapping in return. The whole thing was just a mess. And after seeing this and other things she's been in, I'm STILL at a loss for why the powers that be keep trying to make this woman happen.

The only reason I gave this trash one star was because i couldn't give it zero.

Cringe
20 November 2019
I'll admit that she's not really my style of comedy, but I was bored and gave it a try. Her voice impressions are cringey and some of them go on way too long. There's no real flow to her jokes. It's just one political statement disguised as a joke to the next. Generally I don't have a problem with political jokes, they can be REALLY funny when done right, but when you're just virtue signaling to a favorable crowd that'll applaud anything you say (especially one obviously full of women) it just comes off as preachy and eye rolling.

I'll also admit I was only able to get about 15 minutes in, but that's all I could take.

Bill Burr: Paper Tiger (2019 TV Special)
10/10
Tells it like it is
10 September 2019
Bill Burr hits on all the big cultural issues of the day, while primarily staying away from politics, which I found refreshing. Instead he leans on his hilarious dislike for women, feminism in particular. His jokes are anecdotal in nature, his personality is relatable and he has a knack for saying something totally off the wall ridiculous and then making you somehow agree with his point of view after explaining it. Having said that, Bill Burr's routine is definitely not for the easily offended. You have to go into this first knowing that these are just jokes but also that he absolutely does not pull his punches. It's a good hour well spent. Not as laugh out loud funny as some of his older specials, but again his jabbing at the ridiculousness of the perpetually offended is therapeutic gold. 10/10.

Funny but not classic Chapelle.
26 August 2019
First I'll say that this is funny enough to past the time for an hour. But it's certainly not vintage "rolling on the floor funny" Chapelle circa. 2001.

Having said that, Chapelle has no boundaries and there's no line he won't cross. It's refreshing especially in this era of people being perpetually offended. He's still the insightful story teller he's always been, but a lot of the jokes are pretty superficial and only a handful have that "funny but true, make you think" characteristic.

I love Chapelle and this was good, but if you're expecting "Killin' Them Softly" this ain't it.

Chernobyl (2019)

Insidiously chilling
14 May 2019
I purposely waited for the second episode to write a review, to see if this show would maintain it's intrigue after the initial events. I assumed most of the excitement would die off after the explosion, but somehow this episode was even better than the last! The acting is superb, and there's this constant element of dread knowing there's an invisible menace slowly and indiscriminately killing everyone in it's path. That alone makes this show insanely riveting. But what I find most compelling is the human/political response. Here we have an obvious worsening catastrophe happening and those in positions of authority refuse to accept reality because they have an agenda they're beholden to. The overwhelming disconcerting message I've gotten so far with these first two episodes, that we all can see happening even today is that the "spin", supersedes reality even if lives are lost in the process. This is hands down one of the best miniseries I've ever see.

Not as good as his first special
18 January 2019
SM has two specials on Netflix. The first one "Aren't you embarrassed?" Came at a time when I didn't know who this guy was. But I literally laughed all the way through. His jokes had great timing, were relatable and to this day, I can watch that performance and still laugh at some of the jokes like I just heard them for the first time.

Stay Hungry is NONE of that. And it's a shame because when I saw this was out, I dropped everything to watch it. Like another reviewer mentioned, it's totally disjointed. So many of his jokes fall flat that it was almost cringy to witness, considering the incredibly large venue he was performing in; Radio City Music Hall.

There were a few parts that were genuinely funny, but the few parts that managed to get me to at least smile in this special, were more simply the fillers in the last one. That's how bad this one is in comparison.

Lastly this I'll say is that Sebastian is talented funny comedian, but I think they jumped the gun having him play this venue and if I had to guess, I think it made him try too hard. His last special everything was natural, almost as if he were reacting in the moment. This special, everything is forced, especially his signature physical gestures and perpetually annoyed persona that made him so funny leading up to this. My recommendation: Don't even bother with this one. It's a dud. But I genuinely hope it doesn't ruin his career.

Important documentary
7 October 2016
This documentary shines a very bright light on two fundamental issues going on in our country. The power of money and it's influence on profitable incarceration and ultimately perpetual slavery. I think it did a fabulous job of being virtually opinion free and making a point to stay focused on facts. That said, I think you have to be open to the information. By that, whether you lean right or left, it's best to digest this documentary with an open mind free of your own political thoughts and opinions.

It's foundation is about slavery and how it plays a role in modern events. It suggests that slavery never went away, it merely reinvented itself to "keep up with the times", always having financial gain being the catalyst for it's continued existence. It really shines when it presents it's case on how mass incarceration is today's slavery. The direct correlation between labor based slavery of yesteryear and labor based incarceration of today is frightening in regards to similarity. You can deny it if you choose to, but if you continue to do so after seeing this presentation, then it's simply because you deny fact.

When Colin Kaepernick protested the flag, though I'm a black man, I was offended by his stance. After watching this documentary however, I look at his point of view with a different lens. I don't entirely agree with his approach, but I have to admit that oppression in this country is still very alive and well. I think too many people look at oppression in traditional views like slavery and the holocaust. But in my opinion, you have to appreciate oppression as the complexity that it is, in order to acknowledge it's existence. Again this documentary does an excellent job of making that case. I won't delve too deep into why, I would just simply recommend watching it.

Word of caution however. This documentary doesn't pull it's punches. It's very dark, very disconcerting regarding politics and if it hits you right, it will make you angry and sad all at once. My two children stayed in the forefront of my mind while watching this, and my heart bled for them throughout, seeing what kind of world that awaits them. I tried to be optimistic about light being brought to this issue in such a well put together way, but I believe that we as a country, still have a ways to go, seeing that someone like Trump could get so close to being President.

Overall, this documentary is very important and should be seen by everyone able. Whether you lean right or left, you cannot deny some of the dirty deals made by politicians to keep their pockets lined via profitable incarceration. Real change needs to happen without question, but this documentary drives home the point that as long as "the almighty dollar" rules, don't expect much change anytime soon.

Stranger Things (2016–2025)
8/10
Familiar but unique time machine
22 August 2016
I'll start right out with my reason for 8/10 as opposed to 10/10. In my personal opinion one thing all stories should explain especially mysteries is the how and why. The how and why is murky at best which left me feeling a bit confused about a few things.

With that in mind, I watched this entire series in one day. For ten or so hours nothing mattered except bathroom breaks and snack refills. I kid you not, the very phrasing of the first chapter's title makes you feel like "Ok we're going on a ride here". Then there's the method they used to introduce the series title. Talk about a blast from the past! From then on, just be prepared to be transported to a different time. The set pieces alone are done well enough to give this a gander.

One thing this series did well was mixing "well known" actors with people you literally never heard of. It has a great pull where the Winona Ryders reel you in and the new comers keep you there, knowing you don't have to see the same old style from the same old people, but also knowing you don't have to invest a lot of trust into a whole cast of newbies. The kids especially do a phenomenal job. While a bit cliché at times, considering their age, they were fantastic. You'll see almost immediately that Millie Bobby Brown is in a class of her own.

Another thing I liked about this series considering it's a Netflix Original is that they didn't take advantage of the lack of censorship. There are no unnecessary sex scenes, every other word isn't a swear, and there's not a whole bunch of random drug use or killing. But not to the point where it seems like an after school special. It was simply done right.

Now the general vibe of the series is very familiar as it pulls from just about every 80s sci-fi/horror movie you can think of. What they did well with that however is taking that familiarity and molding it into something new. I don't wanna get on a soapbox, but man was it nice to watch a movie about teenagers and not have it be them glued to their phones. I think whether anyone wants to admit it or not we all can use a break from the strangle hold social media has on us right now. Now that I think of it, I think that's why a lot of modern horror films don't work these days. Technology is all around us, so it's hard to suspend belief when you know that theoretically the entire world is one tweet away from witnessing a mystery taking place. In 1983 that was a different story.

All in all I give it 8/10. Like I said, it locked me down for an entire day. The story is a good pace that keeps you interested. Some things probably could have been explained better, but who knows; as thorough as they were, some of the missing details was probably intentional. This is a good one for everyone. But if you're 30 and older and love a good nostalgia-esk experience, WATCH THIS SHOW!!

Could have been perfect but...
15 May 2016
Let me first say that this is one of the most accurate war movies I've seen to date (and I've seen a lot). I'm a stickler for authenticity when it comes to historical pieces and I also believe that stories about the likes of Pearl Harbor and Titanic are interesting enough without inserting an unnecessary love story. That's where this movie shines. The attention to detail spent on recounting the minute by minute events leading to the attack let you see how the attack on Pearl Harbor occurred. Interestingly enough, where this movie "failed" is to a point where Michael Bay's version shined. NOT the love story part. But during the attack in Bay's version, he accompanies the attack with well placed scores that pull you into the gravity of the situation. In Tora! Tora! Tora! It's well..just an attack. Some movies do really well without scores backing them (Saving Private Ryan) but typically these movies have brilliant visuals and cinematography that circumvent the lack of music. This movie IMHO desperately needed something to bring you into the film. As great as the visuals were for 1970, I just didn't feel "apart" of the attack. I didn't feel anything. It just kind of happened and then it was kind of over. Even as the varying commanders came to realize their blunders, that just watched in stoic fashion.

I think this movie is great. However I think far too much focus was put into being authentic that they forgot "we still need to make it entertaining" and simply put- it's not that entertaining. Interesting, but not entertaining if that makes sense. If you want action and sappy love stories watch Bay's version. If you want the detailed historically accurate version, watch Tora! Tora! Tora!

Fury (2014)
6/10
Meh
17 October 2014
There are A LOT of WWII movies out there, some obviously stand the test of time and have become benchmarks in modern film, while others only succeed in doing a disservice to the brave who fought during that war.

Fury lands pretty much in the middle if not swaying a bit towards bad. The production design was amazing and really captured the look of war torn Europe during the closing days of the war. Outside of that, this film lacks in almost every category.

First and foremost-- the speaking in this film was horrendous. The lingo from that time period is hard enough to understand with people speaking clearly if you're not familiar with the era. The main characters in this film used some of the worst accents I've ever heard. It's safe to say that a good 60% of the film, you can barely discern what's being said.

Next was the music, I don't know if the director was going for a dramatic effect, but the score was terrible and way over the top. A well done drama about such an important topic does not need music as a crutch. At times I felt like I was watching a video game.

Last but not least, this movie literally had no plot. It went from scene to scene, with none being related to each other in any way at all. One scene takes up a large portion of the film and had nothing to do with the ending at all! There was no character development, no back story. Nothing. I don't even know what Pitt's character's name even was.

Bottom line, if you're debating on whether or not to see it, I say save your money. You're not missing much.

Chicago Fire (2012– )
1/10
Insult to firefighters and paramedics
11 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a paramedic who also has had extensive firefighter training. That being said, it took about 5 minutes into the episode before I was laughing and shaking my head "no" as I was overwhelmed with the inaccuracies. Now I understand that it's TV so I know it's not going to be perfect. However I long had my doubts before actually watching it. The first thing that's wrong with it, is that it's on NBC, which means there's a foul language barrier. Anyone who knows real firefighters ESPECIALLY firefighters in Chicago; know that the majority of us can't say more than ten words without swearing or saying something vulgar. So the show pretty much has lost it's realism in the dialog alone. Now I don't argue that you can't make it work, because Third Watch did fine with it for a long time, however the focus wasn't only on firefighters in that show.

Taking that away there's still plenty wrong with this show. Really it's the little things that just build up and make you say "come on!" Now some of it are things only someone on the job would notice, but then there are the obvious. So here are some to name a few: A lot of these guys look like they walked off the cover of a magazine, especially the women. They show one of the ladies after a 24 hour shift and she's all dolled up. A paramedic on the box in Chicago; I'm positive has zero interest in looking all pretty in the morning on the way home!! Are there good looking firefighters and paramedics? Sure but not THAT many. You can have a good show without a bunch of models running around with their shirts off! Lots of the guys have some sort of chin hair. NO FIRE DEPT ON THE PLANET ALLOWS THIS!!! Facial hair interrupts the sealing of the face piece, making it ineffective and even dangerous to wear in a compromised environment. Then it's the lack of focus while responding to calls. Now I'll admit, when you've done this job long enough, certain calls hardly make your heart rate go past 70, but you will NEVER see a guy, on his way to a fire with his feet up, reading the paper...ridiculous! Next, one of the female paramedics is slipping one of the guys some sort of drug, I forget which. If I remember correctly it was a narcotic of some sort. Because of on the job drug abusers in the past, it's nearly impossible to steal drugs from an ambulance without pointing the finger right back at you! So then there are the locker room scenes. Wait I said that wrong, then there are the co-ed locker room scenes. I don't think that needs explaining. Moving on, one of the paramedics in one scene is doing a complicated (and very rare) procedure for whatever reason. They show the little girl's heart rhythm on the monitor even though she doesn't have a single lead on her body. Not a big deal but annoying nonetheless, also if she were that bad off, there'd be more than one paramedic back there at least to set up the non existent IV.

To pick at the actual story. It's painfully predictable and phony. If a fighter died in a fire, you're not gonna see the lieutenant (or anyone for that matter) just rest their head on the ladder as if someone brought then coffee with two sugars as opposed to one. Then the show bounces from character to character not really showing us anything. One guy has a name, that's not really his name, it's confusing what person is assigned to what, considering it's Chicago, the bosses are WAY too young. Especially the guy running the squad. But I digress.

So between all that, the cheesy lines, the sub par acting, and the predictable story lines, I'll say this: Whoever the technical adviser is needs to be fired, because he or she definitely lied about having any kind of background in thus field!! My suggestion: Don't waste your time with this garbage. It'll be gone before you know it. Just like that other show...oh right, "Trauma"!

Red Tails (2012)

Disappointing at best
21 January 2012
I'll be the first to admit that as a huge WWII history buff, I set my bar high as far as expectations. So needless to say, I had high expectations for this film. My first problem with this movie is that the producers assume everyone has seen 1995's "Tuskegee Airmen". Neither movie really explains how the program came to be, but this one drops the story right into the skies of Italy. I was pretty much done with the film in the first 5 minutes. The acting is terrible, FULL of cheesy one liners and wannabe inspiring moments. They try to pull you in by throwing big names at you. Cuba Gooding Jr for instance. Great actor but highly misused in this film, his character he's playing is too old, and doesn't have enough screen time. Terrance Howard is decent, but he's the one pumping the movie full of wanna be inspiring moments. Then there's Ne-Yo. I literally cringed when I saw he was in this movie, and my cringe was warranted with his first speaking scene. I'm STILL trying to figure out if he had some sort of mental disability. As far as the storyline....well there isn't a storyline. The movie kinda just goes from scene to scene with no real connection. It literally has a little bit of everything from romance to gritty war scenes. If you want to learn about the amazing story of the Tuskegee Airman, watch a documentary. Neither one of these movies do those pioneering pilots justice. The only good thing about the film is the cinematography.
