Intense, moving drama
24 December 2006
This is a highly charged docudrama epic, instead of the gladiator/hero-ish action flick its marketing led people to believe. With that said, this is a very gripping film, almost to the point of eerie realism, for those of us who are familiar with ancient royal family politics. Betrayal, back-stabbing, assassination, adultery, family tragedy,... everything that could go wrong in the the royal court happened, and were woven in a way that made the complicated plot that much more involving. More than once, I felt real tangible emotions as events with each character/turning point deepens the tragedy. The one aspect I don't like was the intensity of this film... its almost like watching films the likes of Saving Private Ryan... more like a stressful experience than simple entertainment.

However, if you go in expecting extravagant sword fights, kung-fu, battles, you are going to be disappointed.

Good entertainment, but....

Warning: Spoilers
Major spoiler alert.

This is a good movie by itself, that is, if there is no other ST film and if this movie is original. Overall, the movie borrows heavily from ST2, ST3, ST6, and ST8. Rick Berman was probably under pressure to produce a good ST "10" film and ensure the survival of the francise. So he probably went to the film writers and said, why don't we burrow all the successful elements from the previously sucessful movies and squeeze them all into one picture. The result, an entertaining movie without any thread of originality, which is probably why I left the theater with mixed feelings. The paralells? From ST2, we have a plot line that pretty much parallels what Khan did in ST2 (spacebattle inside a nebula, a doomsday device that can destroy all living things,...) Also from ST2, we have the sacrifice of another major officer, which just happens that there is another B4 to let Brent Spiner return if there should be a sequeal. From ST6, we have almost exactly the same battle sequence, a cloaked ship that can fire at the same time. And from ST8, the phaser fight inside the corridors. There are numerous other elements that were so obviously lifted from other ST films that while I was watching it, I was wondering if they have finally ran out of story ideas (or budget...?) Overall, this is not a bad movie. Its just that its incredible "unoriginalness" took the edge off it.
