Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins (2008)
Why bother (to go home or watch this movie)
I'm glad I didn't pay (other than cable and time) to see this reverse positive message of what family and relationships should be like. It wasn't funny to me and Roscoe had every cause to feel dissed by his family except for his mother. Yet they had no valid reason to mistreat /pick on him. Yet the message is that no matter how 'dissed' one is by his relatives one is supposed to accept it/ them. b--- s---. I know Martin Lawrence makes vehicles like this (simple, low-class humor) but this was insulting to a person with sense. It's hard to write the required ten lines (per IMDb) just so this can be posted yet I think it merits I do so to register my low opinion of this movie.
The Bucket List (2007)
One more in the bucket
It was okay. Worth the money to see these two main actors' performances. Nice to take your significant other to see but somewhat predictable. It could have been more developed and some of the footage was actually boring but forgivable. I would have liked to see and hear more scenes and more personal dialog for the two main characters' personalities with their families, to distinguish this movie--whether or not I would have agreed with their perspectives, as it would have given the MOVIE more impact. The movie was strictly showcasing the depth of acting ability of the two main characters and everyone else is forgettable. Having read some information here on IMDb both made me decide to go see the movie and added some interest by knowing of some unique information about the movie background, but NOT SPOILERS; I chose to not read any spoilers before seeing the movie, and am glad about that. Usually spoilers don't affect my impression of a movie but I think they would in this case and would have made it boring in the places it wasn't. I recommend NOT READING THE SPOILERS TIL AFTER THE MOVIE, if then.
August Rush (2007)
Aw Gut Rush
(SPOILERS)---If it's even possible to add to this festering tripe of what is proffered to be a beefy movie) 'August Rush' should be called Aw Gold Rush. It's a little better than (and assimilates to)'Death to Smoochy' (also played in by Robin Williams. Not that this makes Mr Williams a bad actor, etc.) This movie gives me that same feel with some 'Pay It Forward' mixed in. The movie conveniently and carefully avoids depicting actions of certain characters as irresponsible instead rewarding and spares us the sordid details other than self-ascribed depression. I recall class-assigned required reading of Charles Dickens novels. The characters behave as high-minded persons who don't respond with common-sense thinking. They feel, but don't think , deep. After this love-at-first-sight, horny-tonight rendezvous... maybe it's just the music they hear---that mesmerizes all..yeah, it's the music's fault. oh, I loved the 'dueling guitars' and no one was retarded, just gifted. No scene to suffer for deliverance (from). I could go on how this movie is crafty, I mean crafted, why bother? ah, the striking resemblance of the primary duo to (is that Nicole Kidman? and Ray (what's-his-face)..oh yeah, Liotta) both younger versions decidedly of course, but damn it's almost like the clone machine was tweaked un-beknownst to us. okay ,they're not the real two; but that's in line with the gist of this movie. ***ROBIN WILLIAMS***, ***TERRENCE HOWARD***...are they really in this movie? funny, I thought anybody could play those parts. Well, I guess I'm not the classy-cal, new-age, old-school, happy-melancholy, techno-inspired type to swatch this movie. But my date said she liked it.
Purple Rain (1984)
HIGHLY ENTERTAINING. Under-appreciated by some...I wonder why?
THIS IS A GREAT MUSICAL MOVIE. It is consistent. It is entertaining. See It. See it again. It grows on you even if you don't like Prince, etc, etc. If you give it even a small chance you will see how great this movie is. It was released in 1984. 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch' (which got raving reviews) was released in 2001, but I see where (Hedwig) acquired some ideas (like the 'mouth on guitar' scene). Some people will simply not acknowledge talent and effort. Purple Rain accomplishes its purposes in every aspect and very well.
City by the Sea (2002)
Another vehicle for Bobby D
I guess Deniro didn't have enough material depictive of his great acting ability for 'ironic predicamental circumstances' so he or someone form-fitted this movie for him like a body suit. Cheez...
I got this movie with a rent one, get one free --- and I'm am glad for that thank you. It's good Deniro genre with ALL the parts for you to get the essence of pathetic character that he does so well. But if you are a Deniro 'historian' it comes off unexciting and boring because we have seen this all before in tasty portions instead of one large dose.
What Lies Beneath (2000)
What Lies...!
What lies beneath this movie is the premise that you can take well-known actors and a grade C script and get a good movie. Harrison Ford and Michele Pfeifer gave their all to impress deep emotion into their characters but they could not keep this superficial overly-inflated plot from going belly up. They end up looking tragically wasted. I lost interest around the time that the plot 'thickened' and started to reveal 'answers'...answers that created more rifts than they closed, but I don't want to get into that area. Watch this movie if you are loyal to Ford and Pfeifer, hopefully you will still be afterwards. I only half-watched this guck after the middle. This movie is hard for me to rate because it wasn't that I hated/ liked it, it was like Cup-A-Soup when I thought I was getting beef stew. or something. I don't know.
Minority Report (2002)
maybe they should have called it Minutiae Report...
I'm glad I waited for video. That way you can rewind and pause and be REALLY be confused about what you didn't think made sense when it passed the first time. Lots of glitz without glory. Entertaining not enduring. It's not a terrible movie just that the premise is so disapointedly supported by the script. All the 'pre' hype -- (careful I don't want to spoil it for anyone), I am glad I waited for the video/dvd. Maybe I could have said just that and left out my own minutiae, which probably didn't do much to contribute to your understanding of my conflicts with the movie. Oh well.
Cinderella (1997)
What's not to like about this Disney-fied movie?
What's not to like about this lively, romantic movie? It's fun for both kids and adults, it has some areas everyone can appreciate. Just relax and enjoy it, it IS a fairy tale. Adults can appreciate the 'politically correct' social overtones if they will just 'lighten up' (the adults I mean). The music is modernized, yet still done wonderfully. It's also refreshing to see actors from other genres perform believably here. All in all, a beautiful escape for a short while then back to reality. So sweet and vaguely Wizard-of-Oz-like set appearance. But it is a good movie that does what it intends.
