Cats (1998)
One of the Worst Films I've Ever Seen
This film is absolutely terrible. Not only is there no plot evident, the score, for the most part, is amazingly dry. As a fan of some of ALW's other works (i.e. Phantom..., Evita, etc.), and as an actor myself, I was shocked. I mean, this is a musical that ran for 18 years on the Great White Way. It did not make sense to me. I must give credit, however, to the heartbreaking number "Memory". It is a brilliant song. The choreography was quite good in some places, but became repetitive. I do not recommend this film at all.
Great Performances: Les Misérables in Concert (1995)
BRILLIANT BEYOND BRILLIANT
This concert version of what I believe to be one of the most spectacular musicals in the world is amazing. Just amazing. I was lucky enough to see Les Miz on tour, and was devastated to hear of its Broadway closing - March 15, 2003. I have also been so privileged to be in Les Miz School Edition, as Enjolras. I fell in love with the music, story, everything. The singers are fantastic, notably Lea Salonga, who breaks your heart singing the showstopper "On My Own". Colm Wilkinson, although I am not terribly in love with his voice, does an outstanding job as the role he originated. Michael Ball and Judy Kuhn are entrancing as the lovers Marius and Cosette, and Michael Maguire, with his thrilling voice, is sensational, in a much underappreciated role. (If I do say so myself...) Also, Fantine, Javert, Thenardier, and Mme. Thenardier, are great. The chorus adds so much. I also was drawn into the show by its simplicity. Somehow, With almost no set beside the barricade in Act II, the show works wonderfully. Boulbil and Schonberg are geniuses. The only number I dislike in the show: "Castle on a Cloud". It is a quite annoying song, but is not annoying enough to take away from a perfect 10/10.
Noises Off... (1992)
One of Best and Funniest Movies I've Ever Seen
WOW...how can I begin? I was privileged to see this film a while back. I now own it, and have also seen it on Broadway itself, (a bit disappointing...) and also at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. (Wonderful...almost better than the movie...and that's saying something.) The acting was outstanding. The comic-timing was never off a beat. Hats off to the director. I would also like to point out specifically Marilu Henner, John Ritter, Nicolette Sheridan, and of course, her royal highness, Carol Burnett. These actors stood about above the rest of the fabulous, fabulous, FABULOUS cast. Michael Frayn is a comic genius. SEE THIS MOVIE. NOW.
