Fractured (2019)
Not exactly a mystery
There are a couple things to like about this movie, but the idea that there is a kidnapping and elaborate coverup is absurd from the start and the filmmakers never really even try to make it plausible. So, instead, from about the 15-minute mark you're just trying to guess what the guy's hallucinations are covering up. This gets extremely boring after about an hour because you're certain that you're just sitting through an endless list of red herrings and, sure enough, you find out at the end that he was crazy all along and all the "hints" had absolutely nothing to do with what actually happened. Sorry, that's not a twist. This probably would have worked much better as a 30-40 minute short film where you have less time to think about what's going and how like a dozen+ medical and law enforcement professionals are mishandling someone with a documented head injury.
Brand New Cherry Flavor (2021)
Meh
This show feels 100% like something I would have made back in art school, when I thought I had the coolest, edgiest ideas because I was watching Lost Highway twice a week. There are some interesting things going on here and there, but the pacing is really poor and the story never seems to know where it's going.
I have definitely wasted time watching worse stuff on Netflix, but this was kind of a letdown.
La nuée (2020)
Poorly paced.
Honestly, this probably should have been a 20-minute short and even then you'd probably feel like it takes too long for anything to happen.
The Bay (2012)
Better Than Expected
The Bay is surprisingly well-acted, has a decent amount of creepiness/scares throughout, and, as found-footage movies go, is definitely among the betters ones you'll find. There are some typical horror-character-makes-worst-possible-decision moments in the second half and some plot holes which kind of pull the whole thing down though and the ending isn't strong enough to make up for those. Still, you could do a lot worse if you're looking for something creepy to stream.
I Care a Lot (2020)
Complete nonsense from start to finish.
Angry at the writer. Angry at the director. Angry at every person who had a hand in this. Angry at myself for putting it on. Stay as far away as possible.
The Hole in the Ground (2019)
Maybe not what you thought
A ton of reviews claim this movie is full of plot holes. If you think it's a movie about a boy who falls in a hole and gets replaced by an imposter, that's probably true. But if you consider that it's a film mostly about mental illness and delusion, then maybe not so much.
It's beautifully shot and well acted, but sadly doesn't really live up to it's potential somehow. It's still quite enjoyable though and definitely worth a watch.
Drag Me to Hell (2009)
You won't be scared, but at least you'll be deaf!
Are you afraid of shadows and loud noises? Well, then this movie is for you! Every 5-7 minutes you can be sure that everything will slow down to a crawl, the music will fade out, and then SURPRISE...there is a 140db blast of sound and a close-up of a shadow or an old woman's face, or maybe a handkerchief. Terrifying! I hate to sit here and be completely negative, but I don't know what else to say. The dialogue is awful, the effects are terrible, the last 20 minutes are actually painful to watch because the ending is so obvious, and the movie seems to never be able to decide if it wants to be scary or funny. I love the Evil Dead movies, but this movie is actually embarrassing in comparison. I gave it 2 stars because the opening scene was pretty good, but it's all downhill after that.
