Fever Pitch (2005)
Stereotypical Romantic Comedy
MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS
OK, first of all, yes I did enjoy this movie, but honestly, I only went to see it because I work at a movie theatre and get in for free. This movie, while charming and funny displays all the stereotypes found in most romantic comedies today:
1.Boy meets girl or girl meets boy 2.They fall in love 3.Something outrageous happens and they split 4.Boy or Girl does something totally outrageous to win the other back 5.They live happily ever after
All this with lots of loud lip-smacking scenes(maybe even some uncomfortable sex scenes in there), funny scenes with best friend side-kicks and parents, and WHAM! a movie is born....please I've seen it so many times before.
I really feel that the reason this movie was made was because of the big hype when the Red Sox won the series last year-no offense boys, I was cheering for you all the way, I admit-but what's next? I'm a movie fan who's ready for some new ideas.
Watch this one if you like the Sox or if your mission in life is to see every Drew Barrymore movie ever made. It's cute, but predictable.
Bedtime for Bonzo (1951)
Underrated Classic-give it a chance! (some spoilers)
OK OK....so this film isn't Citizen Kane! But it is definitely worth watching, even if it is just to see President Reagan acting with a chimp. The story is basic- a professor tries to teach a monkey the difference between right and wrong to prove the dean of the college is wrong about hereditary traits. He decides to become the chimp's "Poppa" and hires a pretty young maid to be the "Momma." Basic plot? Yes. Predictable? Yes. Worth the watch? YES! Ronald Reagan was SOOO underrated as an actor, and this shows off his skills, even though it's not King's Row. My favorite scene is the breakfast scene where Prof. Boyd and Jane are trying to act like parents, and the Prof. calls Jane his "little chicken." I also like it when Hans calls the Prof. a "Dummkopf" (German for "stupid head.) The only thing I wish was different was that Jane would fall out of the tree, and Peter would catch her, maybe with his fiancée watching! 8/10
The Bellboy (1960)
Gets Me Every Time!
This movie is one of my all time favorites! Every time I see it I catch something new I hadn't seen before, and, even after watching it so many times, it never ceases to set me into a fit of laughter! Future viewers: Ignore all that junk about it being dated, etc.! Watch this movie and decide for yourself- JL is awesome, and you WON'T be disappointed!
Sunset Blvd. (1950)
So many symbols!! Brilliant!!
****SPOILERS****
I had heard about this movie for many years, but never picked it up because I wasn't a William Holden fan. (Needless to say, I AM NOW!!!) My mother and I both love Billy Wilder, so we finally just decided to watch it! After taking a film class this past school year, I had learned how to recognize symbolizism in films, and this film is FULL of symbols- everything from the dead monkey in the beginning, representing Joe of course, to the monkey in Joe's dream, representing him again, to the screenplay he and Betty write-"UNTITLED LOVE STORY" naturally mirrors their's, to the house in comparison to Norma Desmond herself. This is a great film noir, and a must see for film students.
All performances were incredible- no one can claw the air like Gloria Swanson, and no one can be sarcastic, confused Joe Gillis like William Holden. Billy Wilder is amazing as usual! This is a haunting film that must be seen more than once! Nobody will be dissapointed after watching this film! 9/10
Drumline (2002)
Good, but I have some gripes
I just finished watching this film and I did like it. I'm a drum major for a high school marching band, so maybe I set my hopes a little too high. It's not the greatest thing I've ever seen, but it is watchable. The drumming was fantastic! However, there are some things that irked me throughout the entire film. 1.) Devon's character is a brat through the entire film, and his character's lack of respect for his director and section leader really made me mad. My band director would never have stood for any such thing, and we are just a high school band. 2.) The slang started to get old. "You trippin' yo?" WHAT IS THAT?? If a group of adults, even band directors and moms and dads sat around watching this movie, they wouldn't have understood it.
Even so, I am very happy that a film was made about band, and not another sports film. Don't get me wrong, I like films like "Remember the Titans," or "Rudy," but for once people need to realize that band isn't for whimps. It takes a lot of energy to make a marching band truly great, and we marchers know that sometimes we don't get the appreciation we deserve.
Anyway, I have been using this coloumn for my own personal views on bands when I should be talking about "Drumline." I guess in the end, this film is not just for us band dorks, it's for everyone. And even with the somewhat predictable plot, it has a good story and portrays good lessons about respecting others.
The Matchmaker (1958)
See...Anthony Perkins isn't always Norman Bates!! (Spoilers)
I just finished watching this film, and it really made me laugh! Especially Anthony Perkins who was very handsome and charming throughout the entire picture. This proves he can be loveable and sweet! And when he asked in the beginning "Are you alone?" I wanted to jump into the screen! (okay...that's a little weird, I know....) The rest of the cast was also superb. Shirley Booth makes and excellent Dolly, as does Shirley MacLaine as Irene. Paul Ford, while he did a wonderful job as Horace, he will always be Mayor Shinn, from The Music Man, to me.
Anyway, every Perkins fan needs to see this movie! He will charm your socks off, especially at the end when he explains the moral of the story! And for those who only see him as Norman Bates, watch this film, and it will prove you wrong!
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (1982)
Classically Classy
Being an old movie freak (I may be the only high schooler who can quote "Breakfast at Tiffany's word for word), this picture was a joy to watch! The film clips substituted into the film is a brilliant way to tell the story, although the cleaning lady was a little odd.... Very nice performance by Steve Martin! Recommended to all old movie fans, and lovers of great comedy!!
