Playboy's Penthouse (1959)
a priceless record amazing talent
I don't give a damn about Playboy and Hugh Hefner but the music on this show was amazing. Apparently he appreciated jazz, and I thank God that this show exists as it is an incredible and unique record of such singers as June Christy and Sarah Vaughan in a relaxed and laid back setting, albeit phony and set up. It's only too bad that the camera focuses on some of the silly 'guests'... I think IMDb's data is incorrect. I have never heard of Anita O'Day's appearance on this show, for example, and the dates are obviously wrong as it says 'Anita O'Day 1961, but the show was already gone by then. Goes to show that one should take anything you read on IMDb with a grain of salt - seems they'll publish anything. Very few episodes of this show are available, unfortunately; I hope they are made public sometime soon. Some clips are available on Youtube. Overall, it's well worth watching and a rare glimpse of some of the finest artists of the era.
Art School Confidential (2006)
An offensive and false portrayal of the art world
This film portrays the art and art school world in an offensive, clichéd and vulgar way. It is obviously made by people who know little about art and or New York and foments every false and stereotypically philistine idea Americans have about what is going on there. John Malkovitch should be ashamed of himself for his hackneyed, mannered performance (nothing new) as a stupid, shallow, self-involved art professor. This film does more damage to the world of high culture than the worst Hollywood shoot-em-up drivel. Shame on all involved in it. I give three stars instead of none for the good performances of the young actors. I hope this director never works again. He should end up in Hollywood Hell along with Michael Sarne, director of Myra Blechinridge!
