So WOKE I'm falling asllep

Remember a time when entertainment lived up to it's name and entertained you?

Remember a time when TV shows, movies and theatre were places we escaped to for a few hours respite from the madding crowd?

Remember a time when political statements were reserved mainly for politicians?

Remember a time when we went to Church / Synagogue / Mosque / Temple to be lectured to and chastised by those who (we hoped) were morally & ethically "better"?

If you do remember those days and look back on them fondly, then this show is NOT FOR YOU!!

If you are tired of everyone being offended, and blaming various colours, genders and sexualities for all that is wrong in this world (especially cis-gendered heterosexual white males) then this is only the show for you IF you have extreme MASOCHISTIC tendencies!!

If you can't get enough of gratuitous virtue signaling then pull up a chair and BINGE out on season 3!!

The lead character Max Goodwin.(Ryan Eggold) started off as a nice-enough guy battling with starting a new job, adapting to changing personal situations etc. And you actually feel for the man and root for him - in season 1 Season 2 - his changed circumstances and his corresponding angst etc really gets dragged on a bit long, but not so long that you give up on the show.

Season three - personally, I'd put a match to it!!

There are better (and worse) shows out there that don't shove their agenda down my throat!

UNADULTERATED TRASH!
20 February 2019
Leaving the fact that this completely DESTROYS the entire premise of the original movie aside... This is puerile cr@p- the acting ( I use the term VERY loosely) is beyond atrocious, to the point that at 35 minutes I had to ask myself What am I doing watching this!!

MOVE ON people, do not stop to watch you'll never get the time lost back!!

Starts at a snails pace, then slows down

2 dimensional, weak plot t o start, and the director does nothing to flesh out his characters or their motivation. Don't waste your precious life on this trite drivel

Wannabe fantasy, unresolved, dull, waste of time
22 June 2018
FX and editing leave a lot to be desired. Cheap horror flashbacks that neither resolve nor inform the atrociously weak story line. 6 Genetically altered children, the "greater purpose"of which we never discover. I remember loving the books when I was younger - the movie obviously anticipates a sequel - which, for their sake and money, I hope they don't bother with; as with so many books the film doesn't live up to expectations - in fact this is a YAWNFEST of biblical proportions!!

If you are considering it, DON'T there are better things to do with your time, like watching paint dry!!

Warning: Spoilers
Alien Resurrection was already pushing it's luck as franchise. Prometheus had potential, until the aliens came along, at which point predictability set in. Alien Covenant - Oh Dear God No!! For once it isn't entirely set on a space ship, a lush green planet devoid of life. A certain amount of originality went into the "impregnation" scenario, beyond that, I probably could have spliced half the movie together from the original 3 - I mean, how many times are we going to see the "chest burst", the "face latch". Simply changing location and cast does not a watchable movie make. If you have lived in a vacuum these past 20 years and have never seen another Alien movie - you'll probably still think it's a load of crap!!

Penny Dreadful (2014–2016)

Emphasis on Dreadful
17 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Although the pilot offered much promise, the remainder of the season fails to live up to expectations.

The actual storyline, the grim Victorian era setting and the inclusion of perennial favourite genre characters; Jonathan Harker, Dorian Gray, Van Helsing and Victor Frankenstein, add a wonderful depth to the premise of the series and make it enjoyable and watchable.

Why then do I say that it failed to "live up to expectations" and the emphasis is on "Dreadful"? The series moves at a glacial pace!

Whilst I wouldn't expect a series such as this, set in a world that moved at a more genteel pace, to be fast paced, V8 engine sort of pace, like many other recent series' that deal with the occult side of the horror genre ( Outcast; The Exorcist, Preacher or From Dusk Till Dawn); Penny Dreadful moves at more of an elegant horse-drawn carriage kind of pace.

This is most assuredly not a "binge watch" type of series - trust me I tried - some episodes move at a pace that would help insomniacs, who don't respond to strong medication, fall asleep.

This is not a Fast & Furious paced series, rather more like a Driving Miss Daisy.

Well worth the wait
11 July 2016
I was given the book by a friend from Australia in about '97,I have read it countless times through the years.

I never thought anyone would be able to bring the story to the screen, as Tim had written a remarkable story.

Finally seeing the movie, I can only say that it does indeed do the book justice. No movie can wholly compete with a brilliant and beautifully crafted book, the best it can hope to do is convey the story and the spirit of the book - this movie does just that.

I fell in love with John and Tim all over again, 19 years later. The love they shared, the pain they endured both John's physical and Tim's emotional came back to me as emotionally as it had in the book. (I wept through the end of the book) Was my emotional response a reaction to the movie on it's own, or in part to the memory of the book? I do not know. I do know that Craig Stott's portrayal of John was, for me, spot on, as was Ryan Corr's portrayal of Tim. The story, the spirit and the essence of these two beautiful men is definitely captured and resonate through this film.

Gospel according to Gibson
30 June 2009
Pope John Paul II, may he rest in peace, said of this movie "it is the Gospel according to Gibson" referring to the brutality that is inflicted on Christ. Nowher in the bible is such brutality discussed other than in the mind of the rabid anti-semite mel Gibson. his hatred of the Jewish people - whom he refers to as "kikes" and New York City as "kiketown" - must be taken into consideration when viewing this visually OK but otherwise load of manure.

All this movie seeks to do is continue the blood libels and hatred of the Jewish people by Christians (especially Catholics, around the world.

This portrayal is about as historically correct as the documentary which shows Sir Edmund Hillary scaling mount Everest on a snow-mobile.
