Pi (1998)
Painful on many levels - a minority view.
If you are looking for an evening of entertainment avoid this film. If you are looking for a film for intellectual stimulation also avoid this film.
Possible Spoiler follows:
If on the other hand you enjoy stories about a willful child that inflicts damage to himself and because of it grows up to be a sick (physically, not mental) and brilliant mathematician who has no life beyond crunching numbers and finds peace only when that aspect of his life is lost, then this may be your cup of tea.
The black and white format does lend nicely to the dark images and pain. I guess you would call this an art film.
Overall rating 1/2* out of ****
I rate movies based on whether I would watch it again. **** Could watch it again, and again, etc. *** Could watch it once or twice a year. ** May watch it again if it showed up while flipping channels. * Would NOT watch it again.
Rating for this film is no *'s at all.
The 51st State (2001)
WARNING: Too much of the F word.
If you are a sensitive soul and are offended when the `F' word is used nearly continuously then you may want to avoid this film.
As of this writing there are 73 reviews of this movie. One of them thought that excessive use of the `F' word made the film more real as it typified Liverpool conversation. That is a truly sad commentary on life in Liverpool. The English language is a rich and beautiful, capable of expressing thoughts in depth and detail. The misuse of an ancient acronym (For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge) is shameful.
Possible Spoiler (although it is hard to say, the movie is Pre-Spoiled)
For those who can get past the language there are some funny moments in the film, some interesting characters, a chase scene, and a professional assassination.. The final demise of the `hero's' nemesis is unique.

Was I glad I saw it, well not really but if I had PAID to see it I would be very upset. I wish however that I had seen it without my wife, the silence in the drive home was deafening.

Actually this film made me appreciate Daisy Miller (1974) which I previously thought of as the least rewatchable film ever.
Daisy Miller (1974)
Beauty has a price
There are moments of silence in the movie that focus on a very young Cybill Shepherd. It is easy to understand why Peter Bogdanovich was so taken with this very beautiful young lady and why he allowed the camera to just linger on her lovely face. It was also the best feature of the film.
When she spoke her lines however it seemed like a race to finish each sentence and begin the next one before anyone could interrupt her. Or perhaps just to get through it before she forgot the lines.
There was some improvement in the speech tempo as the film progressed and this style of speaking was not limited to her but applied to several others.

That does not make it a bad movie, and I did enjoy moments in the film, just not enough of them to see it again.
