A totally new genre perhaps?
14 December 2010
This film is a like a breath of fresh air to the animal rights movement. I have seen many films over the years which could be described as preaching, gory and downright disturbing, and this film is none of these! It entertains, educates and apart from one fairly explicit (and unnecessary in my view) sex scene could be a PG rating in the UK.

The real footage of animal abuse which is inserted subtly here and there throughout the film, most people will find unacceptable but helps to describe the motivation of the main characters. The film also explores how big business has interfered with the US justice system, so that members of the ALF are considered worse (in a judicial sense) than the KKK!

I'm probably not selling the film very well here but most importantly it is an entertaining story. So to the general public: Get your noses out of Fox News and the Daily Mail and find out what really goes on in the Animal Liberation Front, the variety of people who do these actions and the reasons which drive them to these actions.

In conclusion: An excellent indie film which sets a new standard in activist films.

Dead Set (2008)

A zombie classic Romero would be proud of
26 July 2009
Channel 4 has done it again! This is an excellent production which rivals "28 days later" as an edge-of-the-seat zombie horror.

These are no slow lumbering zombies as portrayed in Romero films and 'Shawn of the Dead' as these zombies move like the infected in the previous mentioned "28 days later". In my opinion this makes the action scenes even more gripping and terrifying. Don't worry though, there are also scenes more in the style of Romero which show the relentless, perseverance of the zombies and this sustains a high level of suspense throughout the story.

Okay, enough about the zombie aspect - this has so much more! What is surprising is that they poke fun at "Big Brother" (also produced by Channel 4) and the sort of people who watch, and are contestants in, that sort of reality programme. The group of contestants include the standard chavs, the bimbo, the camp, "Julian Clary"-type, the weird introvert and one or two "normal" characters as well. The great thing to watch is how the characters grow and develop over time.

The comedy element also integrates very well into the story with "The Office"-type humour. In summary: this is a true gem which I hope Channel 4 are looking at distributing in the US. Our American friends are really missing out on a zombie classic here (I haven't noticed any reviews from across the pond yet), although they may struggle with some of the broader UK regional accents and Big Brother UK references.
