Dhoom (2004)
Good action, good looking people, BAD acting
An action movie coming from Yash Chopra's banner is a new one. The action scenes are really well executed for a Hindi movie. Except for the boat sequence in climax, the director almost pulls it off. Instead of going on and on about movie let me list the good the bad and the ugly: THE GOOD:- Music is good, Background music needs a special mention. Jon Abraham is terrific. The girls look good too. Rimi didn't have anything but 2 songs and she doesn't disappoint. Esha redeemed herself with the beach scene and who can deny that Tata Young is hot. Action on bikes is really cool and makes you wanna buy one of those machines.
THE BAD:- Comedy is awful. I don't know why people in India liked the comedy. Abhishek and Uday try to outdo each other in bad acting. Whole first half of the movie, Abhishek keeps asking Uday "Chashma Utaroon Kya?" I felt like asking, Chappal Maroon Kya? Climax fight was bad. Boat on the road? Uday and Abhishek chatting in the middle of a fight? terrible stuff.
THE UGLY:- Abhishek and Uday both look awful in the movie. Cant they get someone good with better aesthetic sense to design something for them.
All in all, movie was good fun to watch, specially because the last movie I watched was Asambhav:( I would watch Dhoom again, just for Jon Abraham. I didn't like the guy when he first started acting in movies but he has not given a single performance I haven't liked. Even in duds like Lakeer, he stands out as the best thing. Earlier, I didn't like Esha either but as I said, she redeemed herself with her beach walk. Mallika and Neha can step aside, we have a Jatti on prowl.

Yuva (2004)
Another Masterpiece from Ratnam
An excellent movie. Though Ratnam makes this story a little unbelievable in the end. You do not really mind that because you get involved deep with it. Best part of the movie is its background score, specially for Abhishek's character. Things not to be missed:- Abhishek Bachhan's acting(cant miss that one) Ajay Devgan's action sequences Howrah Bridge action sequence Vivek's light comedy The bike on Howrah which actually crashed breaking Vivek's leg Hospital scene and others in which Vivek is limping(because of the real life accident) Om Puri's near perfect bengali accent
Overall, a very good Hindi movie after a long time.
Main Hoon Na (2004)
All the thumbs, way up
This movie is a mix of everything you can imagine in a movie. But, what an
amazing mix of everything. In spite of all the bollywood cliches, this is perhaps the most entertaining movie in history of indian Movies (well, ok Amar Akbar
Anthony was the most entertaining but it comes right next to AAA) Farha Khan has proven that she has a sixth sense. Ramesh Sippy (or perhaps,
someone else before him) once said that nobody can make great films, they just get made (when all the things fall in their proper places). I would certainly wait for another film from Farha. I hope people dont credit karan Johar or even Adi Chopra for this movie's direction. Shahrukh is a net savvy guy and I hope he reads this. Whenever Shahrukh tries to make Shahrukh bigger than the character he is playing in a movie, the movie flops. Duplicate, Baadshah, Asoka, Phir bhi dil hai hindustani being my points in case. In a recent interview SRK said that he acts the way he acts and he is not going to change that. Well, King you changed it in this movie. SRK's
performance in this movie is a far more subdued one than most of his other
movies. I will put it as his third best performance in his career. Kabhi haan kabhi naa and Dil se being the top two. This is exactly what went wrong with Kal Ho Naa Ho. Nobody identified with oh so weepy SRK and Saif took all the credit.
We like you happy and we like you, you know, normal. So, SRK : over the top
performances, AVOID YAAR. First feminine role for Sushmita. Boy, does she look hot!!! I saw steam coming out of screen. I like the type of roles Sushmita has done so far. But now I think she should do more of MHN type roles. Ash's and Kareena's do not come
anywhere near to her. Zayed khan played his part well and looked good when he had to. Fourth hit film for Amrita Rao after Ishk Vishk, Legend of bhagat Singh and Masti (I dont know why she did that film opposite Raj babbar's son). She deserves the kind of track record she is setting. She is beautiful, innocent, smart, sexy and can act unlike other new girls. Finally Supporting cast, Sunil Shetty, Boman, Satish, Bindu, Kabir, Naseer and Kiron, all do their jobs well. Cinematography lacked softness of Chopra-Johar school which, one expects
from a SRK movie but then it is not their brand romantic movie. Camera angles were good. So were special effects, action and FX. I can't finish without a mention of Ranjit Barot for his special efforts on
background music. I guess it must be Farha's music sense that infected him.All in all, Ebert and Roepper would have said two thumbs, way up. I say all the
thumbs way up.
Tere Naam (2003)
An effort gone waste
Another effort in hindi cinema goes waste solely due to one bad choice. Namely, Salmaan Khan. Role of Radhey was the best role Salmaan could ever have gotten his hands on. He would have made it an award winning performance, only if he had tried to forget that he is Salmaan. It doesn't look like he even watched the original movie. People are praising Salmaan only because it looks like he has performed better than what he has done in other movies. I am sorry, I did not see anything different. Same incoherent way of speaking with unnecessary movement of hands, same dance moves, same old habit of throwing his shirt off without any reason!!!
In the good things, Bhumika chawla didn't have much to do but look sweet and innocent, which she does. Actually Salmaan also looks good with his trendsetting hairstyle(hairpiece). Music and songs are good. Specially Oh Jaana, in which Shaan,KK and Kamaal Khan have been used for chorus!!! Title song was good too.
Mahima was totally wasted. Normally if you get a special appearance for an item number, you focus on the person appearing but in this case the whole focus was on Salmaan. Who picked Mahima anyway? She is a good actress but dance, hmm I don't think so.
Satish Kaushik's direction was good. Although one of these days, he should make a movie which is not a remake of any South Indian movie. Story of the movie was okay. Overall, it was a good movie to watch once but hey Salmaan, please don't bother to make space on your shelf for an award. 7/10
