Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma (1975)
Why?
I watched this movie over a year ago, and as an avid splatter fan, I can't say I feel much like seeing it again. At least not until I know Italian. I'll admit, "the most controversial film ever made" caught my attention, and that's why I bought it. My main issue doesn't really concern the film per say, but the fact that the subtitling was insufficient. It only spelled out major points, and gave little depth.
The film, as others have posted, is rather dull. It's very slow paced, and that added to the bad subtitling, made the film hard to watch. I had to watch it in three parts.
Yes, the controversial scenes are truly disturbing and controversial. But they are extreme to point that one starts wondering why this film ever was made. It has a core of questioning the fascists blah blah blah... The point is, are you a gore fan, this is not the ultimate flick. Are you a political film fan, you'll find the same points in other films, are you into Italian cinema there are better movies out there. I recommend this movie only to patient Italian speaking, homosexual, pedophiles who get excited when eating feces.
Alien Blood (1999)
Crappy wannabe cult-movie
I bought this film on Play.com having read nothing but the summary.
Vampires, aliens, lesbo-love, splatter and gore. Sounded like a great b-flick/Troma-type movie. But it was too good to be true. The movie sucked *ss. The only credit I wanna give is to a few of the out-door shots. Some of the color use is nicely done. Otherwise: Crappy story that barely makes sense, terrible lesbo action, little gore, long ffw-sequences with people staring at the horizon. Jokes that aren't funny. Terrible music. Ugly actors.
Urk. I can't believe I wasted £3.33 on that piece of junk.

Top of the Food Chain (1999)
Brilliant!
I picked this up in sales-crate at my local video store. Under genre it said :Splatter satire. This caught my attention.
The sci-fi spoofs are great, and the dialogue is genius. Campbell Scott plays a great Atomic Scientist and Fiona Loewi plays the sexy bed and breakfast hostess beautifully. Not only is she sexy, but even though she has an incestous relationship with her brother, you would still like to date her.
This movie is for people who understands irony (which apparently some IMDB-users haven't), and like the splatter genre. Though it isn't by far a hard-core splatter, the scenes that are gory, works very well.
Watch it as a comedy and as a caricature of old sci-fi movies.
Re-Animator (1985)
Slightly overrated
I have just seen Re-animator for the first time. I've bought the DVD-version with minimal sensoring. ANd i must say that though I enjoyed the film, I didn't find it to stand out in the horror / splatter genre. As a cult/splatter/horror-fan I liked the humour and the excessive gore, but it is the movie itself that doesn't quite make the cut.
The actors are average and the plot the same. Whereas for example Brain Dead and Bad Taste, and the Evil Dead were excellently shot (especially the experimental filming by Sam Raimi in Evil Dead), Re-animator's filming is more average, giving nothing extra to the film.
Why should you watch it? If you are a splatter-fan it has plenty of gore and some interesting dissectional scenes. It's funny, though it doesn't come close to neither of the three above mentioned films. Not being scary, the sole reason for watching the film are the splatter-scenes. Other than that, the movie gave me nothing.
Day of the Dead (1985)
Slow
I saw this movie a couple of years ago, and wasn't really impressed. I haven't seen the two previous movies in the triology, but I was quite disappointed when I saw this one. The plotline is slow, and I found myself getting bored. There are a couple of nice splatter/zombie-scenes in this movie, but they are too scarse, and come too late in the movie.
I wouldn't Not recommend it, but unless you're a die-hard Romera-fan, find another zombie-movie instead.
The Driller Killer (1979)
Annoying
*** A COUPLE OF SPOILERS ****
I've seen the DVD-version, and I was seriously disappointed. First of all the picture- and sound quality were terrible. That ruined the entire experience. In addition to that, the band that in the end drives the main character insane (I know, I know, it isn't the main reason) is terrible and takes too big of a part of the movie. There are some scenes near the end when the m.c. goes postal with a portable drill that are worth seeing, but only for the little gore that's in the scenes, and only because that's why the movie got banned.
All in all an annoying film, with annoying actors, extremely annoying punk band, and annoyingly terrible sound and picture. Annoying and boring. See it only if you like old, previously banned b-movies where people are killed in nasty ways.
